Why

Each adhoc Mac arch job ran on blacksmith-12vcpu-macos-15 at about $0.16/min. About 3 of each job's ~7 minutes is idle wait on Apple's notary service. The CPU-bound parts are short: build:release:host takes ~38 s, and packaging plus signing an arch takes ~1 min. Those parts already run at the same speed on the hourly build's 6-vCPU Mac.

Measurement

Dispatched run 40616847370 built this branch with label=ci-6vcpu-trial and succeeded. The API confirms both arch jobs ran on blacksmith-6vcpu-macos-15. The 12-vCPU baseline is the last 4 main-YAML runs (40584479847, 40599134395, 40606281105, 40614169522).

12 vCPU (baseline) 6 vCPU (this run)
Arch job 6.7–7.2 min 6.9 / 7.3 min
Build app 38 s 40–43 s
Package and notarize 258–287 s 271 / 304 s (notary variance)
Run wall time 21.7–25.0 min 21.3 min
Mac cost per run ~$2.24 ~$1.20

At ~6 adhoc runs a day, this saves about $6.5/day with no measurable change in wall time. Parallel per-arch jobs stay, and so do signing, notarization, the ref vetting and the publication gates.

The runner label is pinned by mac-notarization-builder-contract.test.mjs, which this PR updates along with docs/readme/ci-runners.md.

Checks

  • pnpm check:changed: passed.

Each 12-vCPU arch job spends ~3 of its ~7 minutes waiting on Apple's
notary service; packaging itself runs at the same speed as the hourly
build's 6-vCPU runner. Halve the per-minute rate.
