COBOL engine: scale validation, nothing measured above about 1,480 members #4267
The mainframe/COBOL fact channels have never been measured on a large production estate.
Evidence (file:line, origin/main)
docs/language_status/cics_mainframe_facts.md:234-235 (section 6): the largest keyed estate is DSF (1,480 files); "Nothing has been measured at ... tens of thousands of members."
Impact on a real estate
Banks and insurers hold 20k-100k+ members. Memory, wall time, per-estate copybook/join cost and DB size are unknown, so a first real scan could stall or exhaust memory.
Acceptance criteria
A synthetic or composed estate of at least 20,000 members (documented generator)
Wall time, peak RSS, DB size recorded per stage; super-linear stages identified
A regression budget in CI (or a scheduled job)
Section 6 of cics_mainframe_facts.md updated with the measured numbers
Out of scope
Non-mainframe languages.
Found during: 2026-10-03 COBOL engine/translator audit
Moved from epic #4317 (estate-crucible), which is closing as complete: phase 4, the scale dial, belongs here. The estate-crucible generator multiplies the synthetic estate to 20k–100k members to produce this issue's scale measurements. Phases 0–3 and 5 are done: 20 apps, 98 members, horrors H-0001–H-0060 scored 60/60, CI-gated at the pinned version (#4446). The generator and answer-key format already exist to build on.
