Description

Note

This PR builds on #4812 (its commit is included here). Without #4812, tabs removed from JS are never removed natively, so the crash below can't happen on main. Only the last commit, fix(Android, Tabs): handle removing the selected tab and adding tabs later, belongs to this PR.

In our app, the set of tabs depends on the selected home: one tab is a different route in different homes. Switching homes removes one TabsScreen and adds another, often while the removed one is selected:

<Tabs.Host navStateRequest={{ selectedScreenKey: 'Home', baseProvenance }}>
  <Tabs.Screen screenKey="Home" />
  <Tabs.Screen key={swappableTabKey} screenKey={swappableTabKey} /> {/* 'TabA' <-> 'TabB' */}
</Tabs.Host>

On Android (react-native-screens 4.27.0, and main + #4812), this breaks in two ways:

  1. Removing the selected tab crashes the app:

java.lang.IllegalStateException: [RNScreens] No selected tab present
        at com.swmansion.rnscreens.tabs.container.TabsContainer.getSelectedTab(TabsContainer.kt:106)
        at com.swmansion.rnscreens.tabs.container.TabsContainer.onMenuItemAttributesChange(TabsContainer.kt:412)
        ...

With only the selection path fixed, it crashes in the next access instead (performPostSelectedTabUpdateActions → TabsAppearanceCoordinator.updateTabAppearance → getSelectedTab).

  2. A tab added after the first selection shows no content: only the tab bar is drawn. The same happens in fix(Android, Tabs): remove TabsScreen natively when it's removed from JS #4812's test-tabs-conditional-tabs: after hiding and showing the extra tabs, selecting Tab4 shows an empty screen.

Root cause (TabsContainer)

  1. When the selected tab is removed, rebuilding the menu (updateNavigationMenuStructure) already moves the BottomNavigationView selection to another item. The follow-up navStateRequest for that item is then rejected as REPEATED in performSelectedTabUpdate, so navState keeps pointing at the removed tab. Every later read of selectedTab throws, because the getter uses checkNotNull.
  2. Fragments are added to the FragmentManager only once, in applyInitialStateToFragmentManagerSync. After that, applyNextSelectedFragmentToFragmentManagerSync only detaches / attaches. A tab added later has never been added, so attach does nothing.

Changes

  • performSelectedTabUpdate: also run the selection when the selected tab is no longer in tabsModel, even if the BottomNavigationView already shows the requested item.
  • onMenuItemSelected / updateNavigationStateAndSelectedFragment: read the previously selected fragment with the nullable getFragmentForScreenKey instead of the throwing selectedTab getter.
  • applyNextSelectedFragmentToFragmentManagerSync:
    • remove fragments that are no longer in tabsModel.
    • add a fragment that has never been added, and attach the others. A detached fragment also reports isAdded == false, so isDetached is checked as well.
  • Added a single feature test test-tabs-swap-tabs.

Before & after - visual documentation

Before (added tab is empty) Before (removing the selected tab crashes) After
1-before-empty.mp4
2-before-crash.mp4
3-after.mp4
  • Before (added tab is empty): on Home, press Swap TabA / TabB, then select TabB: the screen is empty.
  • Before (removing the selected tab crashes): select TabA, then press Swap TabA / TabB: the app crashes with No selected tab present.
  • After: the same steps, then swapping the selected tab 5 times. Home gets selected, the app doesn't crash, and every added tab shows its content.

Test plan

New single feature test: apps/src/tests/single-feature-tests/tabs/test-tabs-swap-tabs. Home is always rendered; the second tab is swapped between TabA and TabB, and the swap requests Home to be selected.

Steps (Android):

  1. Open Single Feature Tests → Tabs → Swap Tabs.
  2. On Home, press Swap TabA / TabB, then select TabB: TabB's content is shown.
  3. On TabB, press Swap TabA / TabB: the app doesn't crash, Home is selected, and the tab bar shows Home and TabA.
  4. Select TabA and repeat step 3 a few times.

Tested on a SHARP AQUOS sense5G (SH-53A, Android 13) with FabricExample (main at 52863ce + #4812):

TabsScreens are not Android children of TabsHost (they live in its
container), and TabsHostViewManager did not override getChildCount /
getChildAt. Fabric's SurfaceMountingManager.removeViewAt verifies the child
via getChildAt before removing it; it never found the tab, treated it as
already removed and skipped removeViewAt. Tabs removed from JS stayed in
the native model and menu, so re-adding them crashed once the menu passed
BottomNavigationView's 6-item limit.

Override getChildCount / getChildAt to return the rendered TabsScreens,
like ScreenContainerViewManager and ScreenStackViewManager already do.

Add the test-tabs-conditional-tabs single feature test.
…later

When the set of TabsScreens changes at runtime, TabsContainer breaks in two
ways:

- Removing the selected tab crashes with "[RNScreens] No selected tab
present". Rebuilding the menu already moves the BottomNavigationView
selection, so the follow-up request for another tab is rejected as
repeated and navState keeps pointing at the removed tab. The `selectedTab`
getter then throws (in the selection path and in the appearance update).
- A tab added after the first selection shows no content. Fragments are
added to the FragmentManager only in applyInitialStateToFragmentManagerSync,
so `attach` alone does nothing for a tab added later.

Read the previously selected fragment with the nullable
getFragmentForScreenKey, still run the selection when the selected tab is
gone, remove fragments that are no longer in the model, and `add` (instead
of `attach`) fragments that have never been added.

Add the test-tabs-swap-tabs single feature test.

📝 Walkthrough

Android tab handling now resolves selections when a selected tab has been removed and reconciles managed fragments with the current tab model. Two registered scenarios cover conditional tab visibility and replacing a tab at runtime.

Changes: Runtime tab updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Removed-tab handling and fragment reconciliation
android/src/main/java/com/swmansion/rnscreens/tabs/container/TabsContainer.kt, android/src/main/java/com/swmansion/rnscreens/tabs/host/TabsHost.kt, android/src/main/java/com/swmansion/rnscreens/tabs/host/TabsHostViewManager.kt
Selection and current-fragment lookup use the screen key. The container removes stale fragments associated with the container and adds or attaches the destination. The host and view manager expose rendered screens through indexed child access.
Conditional tab removal coverage
apps/src/tests/single-feature-tests/tabs/test-tabs-conditional-tabs/*
The scenario toggles Tab2–Tab4, reports the toggle count, and hides the tab bar when only Tab1 remains. Its description and steps cover repeated removal and restoration.
Tab replacement coverage and registration
apps/src/tests/single-feature-tests/tabs/test-tabs-swap-tabs/*, apps/src/tests/single-feature-tests/tabs/index.ts
The scenario alternates TabA and TabB while requesting Home selection. The Tabs scenario registry imports, exports, and registers both new scenarios.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 0206c

Removing the selected tab no longer crashes, and newly added tabs now show their content. However, tabs that were inactive when removed can leave their screens in memory, and repeated tab swaps keep adding to that. Address this cleanup gap before merging or explicitly accept it.

The FragmentManager is resolved per parent fragment (or ReactRootView), so
it can be shared by several TabsHosts. Removing every TabsScreenFragment
that isn't in this container's tabsModel could remove another host's tabs.
Only remove fragments added to this container's content view.

Remove obsolete detached tab fragments.

If an inactive tab leaves tabsModel, its fragment is detached. FragmentManager.fragments excludes detached fragments, so this filter cannot remove it. Repeated tab replacements can retain obsolete fragments and their TabsScreen references. Track this container’s fragments independently of FragmentManager.fragments, then remove fragments that leave tabsModel while preserving the content-view ownership check. (developer.android.com)

Hi, thanks for the PR.

Support for adding/removing/reordering tabs in runtime is planned but as this impacts core library code, we're planning to handle the feature ourselves (for maintainers: ticket on internal issue tracker is https://github.com/software-mansion/react-native-screens-labs/issues/1071). I'll close the PR for now.

If you have any further questions, let us know.
