Status: DRAFT - Incomplete and not working as intended.
This was an attempt to emulate HP Universal Print Driver PCL6 behavior to convert PDFs to Windows spool (.SPL) files. Currently non-functional - the output format does not match what Document Management systems (DocLink) expect.
- Extracts text and layout from PDF files
- Generates PCL6 text commands
- Creates EMF-based spool files
- Wraps output in SPL-like headers
- Windows print spool format is deeply tied to GDI/print subsystem
- The SPL format expected by enterprise document systems is highly specific
- This emulator cannot produce truly compatible output
- HP UPD does far more than PCL command generation - it involves driver integration with Windows print system
pcl6_emulator.py- Core conversion logicmain.py- CLI interfacerequirements.txt- Dependencies
pip install -r requirements.txt
py -3.13 main.py convert input.pdf output.spl
py -3.13 main.py convert input.pdf output.spl --format pcl- Print to File - Use HP UPD "Print to File" option, rename
.prnto.spl - Redmon - Windows redirect port that captures printer output
- Pull from actual printer - Print to printer, capture the real spool output
This project requires deeper Windows print subsystem integration to work properly. Could be revisited with a different approach (e.g., integrating with actual print APIs or producing PDF/A output instead).
