Summary

Remove unnecessary uses of format!() in code where simpler alternatives exist in the same file.

For string literals (format!("_"), format!("<"), etc.): format! invokes the formatting machinery (creates Arguments, calls fmt::Write) only to produce an already-known constant string. Passing "_" directly is simpler, faster, and idiomatic.

No behavioral change — only removes redundant formatting calls.

Test plan

  • No new tests needed (no behavioral change)
  • Existing UI tests for type mismatch diagnostics continue to pass

Thanks for the pull request, and welcome! The Rust Project is excited to review your changes, and you should hear from @mu001999 (or someone else) some time within the next two weeks.

Please see the contribution instructions for more information. Namely, in order to ensure the minimum review times lag, PR authors and assigned reviewers should ensure that the review label (S-waiting-on-review and S-waiting-on-author) stays updated, invoking these commands when appropriate:

  • @rustbot author: the review is finished, PR author should check the comments and take action accordingly
  • @rustbot review: the author is ready for a review, this PR will be queued again in the reviewer's queue
Why was this reviewer chosen?

The reviewer was selected based on:

  • Owners of files modified in this PR: compiler, types
  • compiler, types expanded to 74 candidates
  • Random selection from 16 candidates

Thanks!

By the way, did you use the LLM to generate the PR description? It seems overly verbose to the change itself. If so, for future contributions, please try to write the description yourself. A sentence or two would probably be enough to explain the change clearly, and it would also reduce the review burden.

Remove unnecessary format usage

## Summary

Remove unnecessary uses of `format!()` in code where simpler alternatives exist in the same file.

For string literals (`format!("_")`, `format!("<")`, etc.): format! invokes the formatting machinery (creates Arguments, calls fmt::Write) only to produce an already-known constant string. Passing `"_"` directly is simpler, faster, and idiomatic.

No behavioral change — only removes redundant formatting calls.

## Test plan

- No new tests needed (no behavioral change)
- Existing UI tests for type mismatch diagnostics continue to pass
