Problem

iPhone voice input transcribes in the app's locale. The app ships only in English, so on a phone set to Portuguese that locale is en_BR, and Brazilian Portuguese speech comes out as English-sounding words (#12743). The only way to dictate in another language is to change the whole phone's language. Many people also dictate prompts in a language other than their phone's (#21742).

Change

A Dictation language section under Settings → Microphone:

  • Device language is the default, so nothing changes unless you pick a language.
  • The other rows are the locales Apple's on-device SpeechTranscriber offers.
  • The choice is saved as dictationLocale in mobile preferences and read when each dictation starts, so preparing, downloading and transcribing all use it. Unknown stored values are dropped on load.
  • Availability still comes from main's transcriber probe (feat(mobile): add on-device Android dictation #26734). A chosen language only changes the locale that is prepared, and it stays fixed: a language the device can't transcribe fails with "Voice transcription does not support this language." instead of quietly using another one.
  • The section is iOS-only. Google's on-device recognizer on Android prepares the device language itself, so Android is unchanged.

This is #26725 by @gabrielsch rebased onto current main, plus the device evidence it was closed for. The only edit is the user-guide sentence: it no longer says voice input follows the iPhone's language, which is not true on main yet. Gabriel is co-author on the commit.

Scope and approval

This is a focused configuration option for an established capability. Voice input already transcribes in a single locale, and this option only chooses which one. The default is unchanged, there is no new workflow, and web, desktop, Android and the server behave as before.

Maintainers have pointed to a picker as the follow-up:

Relation to #25808: the two are independent. #25808 fixes the default (Device language follows the iPhone's preferred languages), and this PR lets you override it. A chosen language goes through getVoiceTranscriberForLocale, outside getLocalVoiceTranscriber, so #25808's fallback through the preferred-language list only applies to Device language and an explicit choice is never swapped for another language. Whichever lands second resolves the overlap in voiceTranscription.ios.ts that way, as discussed below.

Verification

Tested on a physical iPhone 17, iOS 27 (24A446), iPhone language Português (Brasil), with a Release build of this branch (Personal Team signing, OTA updates off so the build ran this code):

  • English (US) selected: English speech is transcribed in English, and Portuguese speech does not come out as Portuguese.
  • Português (Brasil) selected: Brazilian Portuguese is transcribed correctly, with accents.
  • Force-quit and reopen: Settings → Microphone still shows Português (Brasil) selected.

Tests:

  • New cases in apps/mobile/src/native/voiceTranscription.ios.test.ts: a chosen pt-BR is used for prepare and transcribe instead of the device locale, and a chosen locale the device can't transcribe fails with unsupported-locale after a single prepare, without falling back.
  • Merged with main after feat(mobile): add on-device Android dictation #26734: mobile tests 906/906 and the mobile typecheck pass. The device test above ran on 0438ff2, before that merge; the iOS prepare and transcribe path it exercised is the same.
  • vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests and React compiler.
Settings → Microphone, before (App Store build) After After, end of list
Before: no dictation language section After: Dictation language section with Device language selected After: end of the language list and footer

A paired headphone name is blanked in the before screenshot.

Not checked: locales other than en-US and pt-BR. Word spacing for non-English locales is unchanged here, and #25808 handles it.

Created with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Voice input always transcribed in the app's locale, and the app ships only
in English, so other spoken languages came out as English. Add a Dictation
language choice under Settings → Microphone. Unset keeps following the
device language.

Walkthrough

The mobile app adds a dictation language setting for iOS. It saves a validated locale preference and uses that locale for local transcription when a matching transcriber is available. The device language remains the default when no locale is selected.

Explanation

The title "feat(mobile): choose the dictation language for voice input" matches the main change. The diff adds a Dictation language picker under Settings → Microphone on iOS, stores dictationLocale in preferences, and routes the chosen locale into the iOS transcriber. It is a short, conventional-commit title with no file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template's sections (Problem, Change, Scope and approval, Verification). The Problem and Change sections clearly explain the iOS locale issue, the new Dictation language setting, and the design. The Scope and approval section cites maintainer triage and links related issues and PRs, and it explains why this is a focused configuration option. The Verification section gives device testing results with iOS version, unit test results, and before/after screenshots. Minor gaps remain: the template's sentence about the AI agent is present, but the description does not name the model in the required format. The description also does not mention the untested locales beyond en-US and pt-BR, though it does state that limitation.

Thanks for this. It covers the explicit choice I asked for in #21742, so I'm dropping my variant (mika/dictation-locale-on-25808) in favor of this PR. The real-device test is the part mine never had.

One thing to watch: #25808 is still open and rewrites the same function. getLocalVoiceTranscriber() becomes an ordered list of the iPhone's preferred languages, and prepareVoiceTranscription falls through to the next language on unsupported-locale. Whichever PR lands second should keep a fixed choice out of that fallback, roughly:

const locales = preferredLocale ? [preferredLocale] : getPreferredLocales();

Otherwise picking Deutsch on a device where German isn't available would quietly transcribe English. With the fixed locale on its own, the user gets the existing "does not support this language" error instead.

Thanks, and good catch. I checked #25808's getLocalVoiceTranscriber() and you're right: its fallback would silently swap a chosen language for the next one in the device list.

A chosen language should stay fixed. If this PR lands after #25808, I'll rebase it to use preferredLocale ? [preferredLocale] : getPreferredLocales(), so Device language keeps #25808's fallback and an explicit choice still fails with "does not support this language". If #25808 lands second, the same line applies there.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Wait for saved preferences before selecting a dictation locale.

If the native availability probe finishes before preferences load, the microphone can become available while AsyncResult.isSuccess(preferences) is false. A user who starts recording then receives the device-language transcriber, even when a different locale is saved. Do not start dictation with the default transcriber until preference hydration establishes that Device language is selected. Gate microphone availability consistently, and cover this loading order in a test. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject a different regional locale for an explicit choice.

If a user selects pt-PT and Apple resolves it to pt-BR, this factory proceeds with the returned locale instead of reporting that the choice is unsupported. SpeechTranscriber.supportedLocale(equivalentTo:) can select a near-equivalent region, and prepareVoiceTranscription uses that result for transcription. Compare the prepared locale with the explicit choice before returning the prepared transcriber. Preserve near-equivalent resolution for Device language, and test the explicit-choice mismatch.
