feat(clients): add a merge request terminology toggle - #29576
Review terminology currently follows the hosting provider, while some surfaces still hard-code “pull request” or “PR”. Users cannot choose consistent wording across their projects, settings, and clients.
Change
Add Use merge request terminology under Settings → Source control on web, desktop, and native mobile. Off uses “pull request”/“PR”; on uses “merge request”/“MR” for every host, without provider detection. The default is off, and the preference is saved separately on each client/device.
Centralize terminology, casing, plurals, and articles such as “an MR”.
Apply the choice to settings descriptions and search, navigation, keybindings, the command palette, review lists/details, dialogs, Git actions, accessibility labels, and shared activity summaries.
Give mobile reactive preference-backed terminology, including saved-preference hydration and failed-save rollback.
Forward an optional per-action preference to the server so Git progress and completion messages use the same wording.
Preserve protocol identifiers, review URL routes, stored references, and actual Git pull operations. Update the user guide.
These client, contract, and server changes all serve the same terminology preference; they do not change how reviews are created, linked, or merged.
Scope and approval
No explicit maintainer approval link was provided. This PR is submitted for consideration; the required direction/scope approval remains outstanding.
This changes product defaults: GitLab users who currently get provider-specific wording will get “pull request” until they enable the new preference. Unknown-host fallback wording also becomes “pull request”. It replaces provider-based terminology rather than adding a provider-aware override. Do not describe this as an obvious bug fix or assume that adding a setting exempts it from the contribution policy.
Verification
At head 6109e0387b, against fetched origin/main at cc59f99e73:
vp run check:changed origin/main passed: formatting, lint, both knip passes, generated GraphQL checks, typechecks for 35 affected/dependent packages, 893 tests in 72 files, and 132 selected React compiler checks covering 127 source files.
Focused mobile/preference validation: vp test run apps/mobile/src/state/preferences.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/sourceControlClients.test.ts — 43 tests passed. This covers the default, optimistic updates during hydration, switching back off, restored preferences, failed-save rollback, and the shared terminology mirror.
vp run typecheck from apps/mobile passed.
Local web verification: toggled both ways in Source control, verified updated Default merge method and review-guide descriptions, checked Diffs, Threads, and generated keybinding labels, then reloaded to confirm persistence.
Phone-sized web verification at 390px and 412px: toggle and persistence worked, terminology changed correctly, and the document did not overflow horizontally. This was responsive-web testing, not native iOS/Android runtime testing.
git diff --check origin/main...HEAD passed. A non-mutating git merge-tree --write-tree --name-only HEAD origin/main check found no conflicts. The branch is five commits ahead and 14 behind that upstream snapshot; no merge or history rewrite was performed.
Review follow-up at 4cfe1e08cc
Fixed all seven verified CodeRabbit findings: offline mobile setting access, stable stored context paths, terminology in action failures, reactive linked-panel/status/detail labels, Restore defaults, and URL preservation.
Fixed the CI mobile-suite import failure by mocking the newly added terminology hook at the existing workspace test boundary; the suite no longer imports Expo runtime initialization into Node.
Final focused verification passed: 77 client tests across five files, two Git action tests, web typecheck, changed-file formatting/lint, 16 selected React Compiler checks, and commit-hook knip.
The broader local run did not pass: Git checkout/worktree tests outside the edited stacked-action path hit timeouts. Those tests were not disabled or given longer timeouts. An intermediate lint issue and three browser failures introduced during the follow-up were fixed; final targeted reruns pass.
CI on 4cfe1e08cc passed: lint, build/typecheck, all eight server-test shards, Test (including mobile), Test Web, release smoke, and the aggregate Check gate. CodeRabbit's latest review reports no new actionable findings; all seven original review threads are resolved.
UI evidence
Captured from the local app at 4cfe1e08cc. These compare the toggle off/on in the same build, not separate base/head builds. The phone captures use a 390×844 responsive-web viewport; they are not native iOS/Android runtime evidence. Images are GitHub-hosted review assets in the author's fork, not committed files.

Limitations
Native iOS/Android runtime verification is still outstanding because T3 Device access is disabled. Enable Settings → Integrations → Devices, start a new agent session, and exercise the native Source control toggle before claiming native runtime verification.
Responsive-phone screenshots are attached above; native-device screenshots and runtime verification remain outstanding.
No paid model evals were run. CI build, test, and release-smoke results are recorded above; native device runtime verification remains outstanding.
Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code and gpt-6.1-sol via Codex, running in T3 Code.
merged main at 8198b2e without rebasing, preserving hosted thread links and the prompt header. corrected the mobile close confirmation's removed api reference. invalidated cached tool-history labels on web and mobile and passed terms explicitly into expanded rows. added the selected full term to copy-link search aliases while retaining pull request.
blacksmith vp run check:changed 8198b2ed5e1286afa46b26e65290d31977555dce passed: 36 package typechecks, lint, format, knip, graphql, 1,107 tests in 77 files, and 138 selected compiler checks. the existing browser test reproduces the stale labels before the fix and covers collapsed and expanded labels after toggling both ways.
live chrome verification passed toggle on, reload persistence, toggle off, and searching merge request link against this real linked review. native mobile close interaction, electron, and remote/relay remain unverified. fresh ci is pending. both independent reviewers approved this head.
GitLab projects already show "merge request"/"MR", but each screen read the
host's terms straight from its definition, so there was no way to opt out and
several thread-scoped strings were still hard-coded to "pull request".
Every client read now goes through `changeRequestTermsFor` in client-runtime,
which honors a new client setting, `providerSpecificTerminology` (default on).
It's exposed as "Use version control specific language" under Settings →
Source control. Stacked git actions forward the choice to the server, so
progress labels and completion toasts match. The right panel tab labels,
command palette entries, composer PR picker, linked-PRs empty state, and
copy/link toasts now use the active project's terms.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The sidebar, Pull requests page, settings section and mobile tabs always said
"pull requests", which read oddly for GitLab users once the rest of the UI said
"merge requests". These surfaces now use the term every project's host agrees
on, and fall back to "pull request" when hosts disagree or the setting is off.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This change adds a client setting that selects pull-request or merge-request terminology. Mobile and web interfaces and shared runtime messages use the selected terms. Stacked-action requests pass the selection to the server, which uses it for progress labels and completion messages.

Verified in a real dev environment
verified as-is at 4cfe1e08cc0178c4139e92d93161e4bd29055862 on linux, using playwright from the repository dependencies and /usr/bin/google-chrome against vp run dev.
first ran github/main at 61c3794c32 in a separate worktree with vp i. source control had no terminology toggle; diffs settings used pull-request wording. stopped that server before starting the exact pr head with its own isolated state.
created a real git project through the app. codex gpt-6.1-sol created and committed a readme on main. on the pr, a real codex turn read that same file, ran git status/log, and returned the correct commit. no replay provider, fixtures, or mocked data.
the preference starts off. enabling it updates source-control descriptions, diffs settings, settings search, keybinding labels, the command palette, and review-list wording. it survives reload. the row reset and restore device defaults both return it to off.
linked this existing review through the command palette and opened its real git.cafe details in the app. toggling with the panel mounted updates its accessible labels and the sidebar's PR/MR status label in both directions. the stored review url stays unchanged. review-list navigation still works.
exercised the actual client command vcsActionManager.runStackedAction through the running websocket server against the disposable repository after a codex turn detached its head. create_pr safely rejected before any push or review creation, with wording matching the ui setting:
toggle on -> action_started -> action_failed:
Git manager failed in runStackedAction: Cannot create a merge request from detached HEAD.
toggle off -> action_started -> action_failed:
Git manager failed in runStackedAction: Cannot create a pull request from detached HEAD.
blacksmith ran the existing terminology/settings/detached-head cases in sourceControlClients, useSettings, contracts/settings, state/gitActions, and GitManager: 12 selected tests passed across 5 files. current head ci reports 28 successful checks, zero pending or failing. no code changes were needed.
before, github/main, matching diffs settings:

native ios/android and the electron shell were not exercised on this linux browser pass. gitlab, bitbucket, azure devops, and forgejo integrations were not exercised. successful review creation, push, merge, auto-merge, and completion toasts were not triggered; the server check above covers the failure path only. remote/relay, tunnel, multi-device isolation, and native preference-save failure rollback remain unverified.

Thread reactive terminology through keybinding labels.
commandLabel now reads terminology state, but KeybindingsSettingsPanel does not subscribe to that state. Pass useChangeRequestTerms() through commandLabel and all logic and component callers, including filtering and sorting. Otherwise, changing mergeRequestTerminology can leave the mounted panel's visible and accessibility labels stale.

Restore defaults can reset the terminology while the keybindings page

Re: the outside-diff finding on KeybindingsSettings.logic.ts (keybinding labels not reacting to terminology). Fixed in ab296cc.
The finding was valid: Restore defaults lives in the settings layout, so it can flip mergeRequestTerminology while the keybindings page stays mounted, leaving labels from the non-reactive mirror stale. useKeybindingCatalog now subscribes once through useChangeRequestTerms() and passes the terms to buildKeybindingRows / buildKeybindingCommandOptions, which store each command's label on the row and option. Titles, accessibility labels, search filtering, conflict labels, and the new-binding command list read those labels, so they recompute with the setting. This is one subscription for the panel instead of one per row component. Extended the existing terminology case to check explicit terms on commandLabel and row labels; keybinding logic and browser tests pass.
