Problem

When a thread's managed worktree folder has been deleted (by storage cleanup or git worktree remove), the thread details panel offers Initialize Git in place of the branch controls. Clicking it fails with VCS process failed in GitVcsDriver.initRepository: git (<worktree path>) exited with 128. Reproduced on main at d890e5c in the web app: create a thread in a new worktree, let a turn finish, run git worktree remove <path>, restart the server, and open the thread.

Change

  • Web (GitActionsControl): when the VCS status says "not a repository" and the thread has a worktreePath, the Initialize Git row is replaced by a disabled "Worktree missing" row. A worktree is always a checkout, so running git init there is never correct. Threads without a worktree, on a folder that is not a repository, still get Initialize Git as before. So do No project threads, whose worktreePath is a plain scratch folder rather than a checkout (that case is Initialize Git on a No project thread runs git init at the scratch root, and linked PRs need git to show in thread details #27626). Sending a message still recreates a missing managed worktree through the existing turn-start path.
  • Server (GitVcsDriver.initRepository): checks the folder exists before running git init. If it does not, it fails with the existing VcsRepositoryDetectionError and the detail "The folder does not exist." instead of git's bare exit 128, and creates nothing. Older clients still show the button, and a deleted project root still reaches it; both now get a clear error.

No contract or schema changes. Mobile has no Initialize Git control.

Scope and approval

Fixes #29062

Verification

Focused tests (both fail on main for this bug, pass on this branch):

  • apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.test.ts › "refuses to initialize a repository in a folder that does not exist". On main it fails with expected 'VCS process failed in GitVcsDriver.initRepository: git (…/removed-worktree) exited with 128 …' to match /does not exist/i. The file passes 68/68.
  • apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx › "does not offer Initialize Git when the thread's worktree folder is missing". On main it fails because the Initialize Git button is found; on this branch "Worktree missing" is visible and Initialize Git is absent. The control tests "offers Initialize Git for a project folder that is not a repository" and "keeps Initialize Git for a No project thread's scratch folder" guard the cases that must not change. The file passes 4/4.
  • vp run check:changed passes: format, lint, knip, typecheck (4 packages), tests, react compiler.

Real-app checks (the deleted-worktree after-stills retaken at 37567a3 match the 187b15d ones with 0 changed pixels), web dev server, Playwright Chromium, DPR 1, fresh databases on both sides (T3CODE_DEV_SEED=0), same synthetic fixture: a disposable repo, a worktree thread with one completed Codex turn, then git worktree remove and a server restart.

Row Before (d890e5c) After (187b15d; rechecked at 37567a3)
Deleted worktree, 1440×900 and 390×844, light and dark Initialize Git Disabled "Worktree missing". At zero threshold, only the row's icon and label pixels differ.
Deleted worktree, 390×844 dark: click the row, then Tab Click starts git init and shows the exit-128 toast Click does nothing (0 vcs.init requests); Tab skips the row
Plain non-git project folder, 1440×900 light Initialize Git Initialize Git, unchanged
No project thread on its scratch folder, 1440×900 light (before at 5fc5a1d, after at 37567a3) Initialize Git Initialize Git, unchanged (0 changed pixels)
Deleted project root folder, click Initialize Git Toast: "…exited with 128 …" Toast: "…The folder does not exist."
Backend vcs.init RPC (exit 128) Absent folder: VcsRepositoryDetectionError, "The folder does not exist.", folder still absent. Existing empty folder: success.

Evidence: before/after stills (with zero-threshold and >16/255 diff images), recordings of the click/Tab interaction, and the backend transcript were captured but are not embedded here: the upload tool was unavailable during this run.

Not checked: desktop (Electron) separately, since it wraps the same web component; remote/relay/tunnel modes (the existence check runs on the server, so they behave the same); compact and essential panel densities (the changed row is identical in both).

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 (lead, red test, implementation, review B) and GPT-6.1 Sol (review A, proof audit, capture), run from Claude Code inside T3 Code.

These tests reproduce #29062. The server test expects initRepository on a
folder that does not exist to fail with an error saying so, without
creating it. The web test expects a thread whose worktree reports a
non-repository status not to offer Initialize Git, next to a control
where a project-root thread on a non-repository folder still does.

…is gone

A deleted worktree reports as a non-repository, so the thread details panel
offered Initialize Git, which then failed with a raw git exit 128. Threads with
a worktree now show a non-actionable "Worktree missing" row instead, and
GitVcsDriver.initRepository refuses a folder that does not exist rather than
running git there.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 37567a3

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Missing managed worktrees now display a disabled status instead of offering Git initialization, while the server reports missing folders explicitly. The change is narrowly scoped and introduces no automatic repository or data modifications.

Walkthrough

The Git actions control now distinguishes non-repository worktree threads from other non-repository folders. The Git driver checks that the target folder exists before running git init. Browser and server tests cover these cases.

Changes: Missing worktree handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Worktree status in Git actions
apps/web/test/fakeEnvironment.ts, apps/web/src/components/GitActionsControl.tsx, apps/web/src/components/ChatView.browser.test.tsx
Fake thread shells now carry an optional worktree path, and the fake environment supports server-config updates. When Git reports no repository for a worktree thread, the control shows a disabled “Worktree missing” row instead of “Initialize Git.” Browser tests cover this case and initialization for project and scratch folders.
Reject initialization for missing folders
apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.test.ts
initRepository raises VcsRepositoryDetectionError when the target folder is missing or the existence check fails. A test checks the missing-folder error and confirms the folder remains absent.

Explanation

The description is complete and relevant. It explains the problem, change, scope, affected cases, focused tests, observed results, limitations, and implementation provenance. It does not embed the captured UI evidence or include explicit maintainer approval details, but these omissions do not make the description incomplete overall.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#29062] requires the thread details panel to identify a deleted managed worktree and offer recreation from the thread branch. GitActionsControl renders only a disabled Worktree missing row. The changed browser test verifies that Initialize Git is absent, but it does not verify a recreation action. The PR satisfies the other requirements: it preserves Initialize Git for non-worktree folders, shows the missing-worktree state, and makes GitVcsDriver.initRepository return VcsRepositoryDetectionError with The folder does not exist. for an absent folder.

Resolution

Add an enabled panel action for a missing managed worktree. The action must recreate the worktree from the thread branch. Add an automated test that verifies the action and the recreation request.

Test the VcsDriver service instance.

makeVcsDriverShape() constructs the implementation directly. The test should retrieve VcsDriver.VcsDriver from layerGitContract so it exercises the service wiring used by callers.

Add a regression test for filesystem-check failures.

initRepository maps an fileSystem.exists(input.cwd) failure to VcsRepositoryDetectionError. Add a focused test that injects a filesystem error, asserts the mapped error preserves the original cause, and confirms Git is not invoked. This test can catch the earlier fallback that discarded the error. The existing missing-folder test covers only exists returning false.
