Problem

While an agent edits files, each working tree change re-renders the whole chat view, and the side chat too when one is open. The chat view never shows those file counts.

Change

ChatView subscribes to the checkout's full git status through useEnvironmentQuery, but it only reads isRepo, refName, hasWorkingTreeChanges and pr. Status events carry the file list and insertion counts, so nearly every edit produces a new object and a render.

It now reads chatGitStatusAtom (apps/web/src/state/vcs.ts), which keeps only those four fields and compares them with Equal.equals, because atoms compare by identity by default. An update that leaves all four unchanged notifies nobody. A branch switch, a PR change, or the tree going dirty or clean still re-renders the chat, and refresh works as before.

Components that show the file details, such as the diff panel and git actions, have their own subscriptions and aren't changed. Web only: desktop wraps web and gets this fix, and mobile has its own screens and isn't changed. Nothing changes on the wire.

Scope and approval

This qualifies for the small, focused bug-fix exception in CONTRIBUTING.md. It removes unnecessary renders without adding a feature, changing product defaults, or altering contracts.

Verification

Benchmark: 20 git status updates where only file counts change, with a main chat and an embedded side chat open. This is the new app-git-file-counts-with-side-chat scenario in the repo's render harness. Results were identical across 3 runs on each side.

Renders main This branch
All components 1,660 0
ChatView (main and side chat) 40 0
MessagesTimeline 40 0
ChatComposer 40 0
ChatRightPanel 20 0
ConversationTimeline (side chat) 20 0

The scenario also asserts that a branch switch still re-renders both chats. Merged locally with #28563 and #28564 this scenario also reads 0, so this PR removes the 1,220 renders #28564 leaves for this kind of update.

Reproduce with T3CODE_RENDER_REPORT_DIR=<dir> vp test run --project renders test/appScenarios.renders.tsx -t app-git-file-counts from apps/web.

  • chatGitStatusAtom test in vcs.test.ts: a file count change or a new pr object with the same data notifies nothing. A change to the branch, dirty state or pr notifies once each. It needs the new atom, so on main it can't compile rather than failing on the behaviour. The benchmark is the before/after proof.
  • vp run check:changed passes, including React Compiler coverage. Every other render scenario matches main, except switch-thread, which read 982 against 993 on all my branches, including ones that don't touch it.
  • warm up, app-stream-assistant-turn and app-toggle-diff-panel in this harness fail on my Mac on clean main too, so render-metrics.ts run couldn't complete. I ran the scenarios through vp test directly.

Not checked: a real agent editing files in a real client, the desktop app, and remote connections. These are render counts, not timings, and real status events also carry remote updates, so real savings depend on the mix. No visual change, so no screenshots.

This shares identical test harness setup with #28564, and both add a git scenario at the end of appScenarios.renders.tsx, so whichever lands second has a small test-only conflict. I'll rebase it.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at b0e9cab

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The change narrows chat's Git-status subscription so file-count updates no longer trigger unnecessary renders, while preserving the fields and refresh behavior its consumers use. The assessed changes introduce no product-default changes or material operational exposure.

Walkthrough

ChatView now reads a structurally compared projection of VCS status. The linked-pull-request hook accepts only the status fields it uses. Unit and render scenarios cover status changes, including file-count updates and branch-name changes.

Changes: Chat Git status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Status projection and equality
apps/web/src/state/vcs.ts, apps/web/src/state/vcs.test.ts
Adds a chat-specific status projection with structural equality. Tests check which status changes notify subscribers.
ChatView status integration
apps/web/src/components/ChatView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/pullRequest/useThreadLinkedPullRequest.ts, apps/web/test/appScenarios.renders.tsx
ChatView reads the projected status and obtains refresh through useEnvironmentQueryRefresh. The pull-request hook accepts only refName and pr. A render scenario checks that file-count updates do not render ChatView, while a ref-name change renders both chat views.

The fixture defaults to hasWorkingTreeChanges: true and pr: null. The test changes only refName, so a projection regression that suppresses either notification would pass. Extend the existing case with both field changes:

merged github/main at 60aec28a9c6f into the contributor branch with merge commit 9bc292d3bf1d33363c3c6e666579a117fe3485d2, pushed without force. the merge was clean and leaves all five pr files unchanged. no additional source changes.

blacksmith vp run check:changed 60aec28a9c6fdb7417a7382ec094ccc4984d0738 passed format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, 52 focused tests, and compiler coverage. warm-up and both git browser render scenarios passed. the exact pdf reload test that failed in the previous ci run passed directly; left that unrelated code unchanged. both independent source reviews found no issues at this head. the bot finding about consuming the final status update was already addressed by the contributor and its thread is resolved.

ci is running on the new head. the real-provider evidence below is historical and was not recaptured for this merge-only update.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at b73677c49cb60dadbd7a7e33d234770b892ef8ec on linux, using the repo's playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome against vp run dev. reproduced on github/main at b50d8a1b15ee first, then stopped that server before starting this head. reused the isolated app-created project, threads, and real git repository. codex gpt-6.1-sol ran through the local proxy, with no mocked provider or status events.

with the main chat and a real side chat open, six terminal edits changed the insertion count from +2 to +8 while the branch and dirty state stayed unchanged. window-return revalidation read real git state through the running server. a react devtools commit hook counted these renders:

component main pr head
ChatView, both chats combined 18 0
MessagesTimeline 18 0
ChatComposer 18 0
ChatRightPanel 9 0
ConversationTimeline 9 0

these are observed render counts, with no wall-clock speedup claim.

nearby behavior also passed: a real codex turn edited notes.txt and created agent-result.txt; the client showed both files and their exact contents in the expanded diff. refresh diff worked. the branch picker created and switched to verification-branch, then returned to main. committing through the app made git clean and changed the action from commit to publish. no source changes or pr commits were needed.

received localUpdated insertion counts, main and pr: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
stable fields: isRepo=true, refName=main, hasWorkingTreeChanges=true, pr=null
provider edit: notes.txt +9, agent-result.txt +1
app commit: a1b3724; git status --porcelain: empty
return to main: client shows main, +0 -0, publish repository
blacksmith check:changed against 37d7615a91d8: passed
format, lint, knip, typecheck, 49 focused tests, compiler coverage: passed

verification transcript

main before: the same main chat, side chat, and +8 file count

pr after: the same chat data and +8 file count

real codex edits appear in the expanded diff

branch switching, diff refresh, and committing through the running app

Not verified

native desktop and mobile clients, remote relay/tunnel connections, other providers, and real linked-pr state transitions were not exercised. this verifies the local web client and real codex path. linux cannot establish native macos/windows behavior. the change does not touch mobile or the wire contract.
