fix(mobile): sort pull request lists and timelines by time - #28391
The mobile app orders pull request activity, discussion replies and the pull request list by comparing timestamp text. Hosts can return timestamps with UTC offsets or mixed fractional seconds, and then text order disagrees with time order.
For example, 2026-07-05T01:00:00+02:00 is 23:00 UTC on the previous day, but it sorts after 2026-07-05T00:30:00Z. A comment at 00:30:00.5Z sorts before a commit at 00:30:00Z. GitLab passes commit dates through with their offset, so commits can land in the wrong place among comments in Activity. In the list, an older request can show above a newer one with Recently updated selected.
Change
A small compareTimestamps helper in apps/mobile/src/lib/time.ts compares parsed instants. The Activity timeline, discussion replies and the list's Recently updated, Oldest and Newest sorts use it instead of localeCompare.
Newest first in Activity now sorts descending instead of reversing the oldest-first list, so rows at the same instant keep their input order in both directions. The "more activity" notice stays last.
A missing or unparseable timestamp counts as the Unix epoch, so it still sorts before any real host date, where an empty one sorts today. No timestamp format or server contract changes.
Scope and approval
This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious ordering bug, under the focused-fix exception. There is no linked issue or maintainer approval. It is the mobile half of the defect #23588 fixes on web; that PR leaves mobile out because mobile has its own code. The mobile files already parse timestamps numerically for other recency decisions (pullRequestStack.ts, pullRequestStatus.ts).
The composer's pull request picker sorts its matches the same way, but that code is shared with web (packages/shared/src/composerPullRequestMatches.ts), so I left it for a separate change.
Verification
apps/mobile/src/lib/time.test.ts: offset, UTC and fractional-second timestamps plus an empty one sort by instant, with the empty one first. With the old text comparator it fails and returns the three timestamps in reverse time order. A second case checks that equal instants keep their input order in both directions; sorting oldest-first and then reversing fails it.
pullRequestList.test.ts: Recently updated and Oldest order an offset timestamp by time, and Newest created sorts on its own field. With the old list sort it fails.
PullRequestTimeline.test.tsx: Activity follows the chosen direction and keeps the notice last. Ignoring the direction, or adding the notice before sorting, fails it.
The four affected test files in apps/mobile: 42 passed.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests and React Compiler pass.
Devices: an iPhone 17 Pro simulator on iOS 26.5, and an Android 16 Pixel emulator with software rendering (renderer not readable), both development builds. A test proxy in front of an isolated dev server answers the pull request RPCs with the same synthetic GitLab fixture for both builds. Each row names its fixture timestamp. The list uses Recently updated, and Activity uses Newest first.
iOS, list. Before: the oldest update, with the offset, shows first.
iOS, list. After: newest to oldest.
iOS, Activity. Before: the oldest commit is on top.
Host timestamps can carry UTC offsets or mixed fractional seconds, so
their text order is not their time order. The pull request timeline,
discussion replies and pull request list sorts compared them with
localeCompare.
Compare parsed instants with a small compareTimestamps helper instead.
A missing or unparseable timestamp counts as the Unix epoch, so it
still sorts before any real host date.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Mobile pull-request lists and timelines now sort by parsed timestamps, correctly accounting for UTC offsets and fractional seconds. Existing sort modes remain unchanged, and the effects are limited to display ordering.

The change adds timestamp comparison utilities and applies timestamp-based ordering to pull request discussion comments, timeline events, and list entries. Tests cover timestamps with offsets and fractional seconds, missing timestamps, and equal instants.
Changes: Timestamp Ordering
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Timestamp utilities and validation apps/mobile/src/lib/time.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/time.test.ts
The time utilities compare parsed timestamps and provide ascending or descending ordering. Tests cover missing timestamps, differing offsets, fractional seconds, and equal instants.
Discussion and list sorting apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestDiscussionScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestList.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/pullRequestList.test.ts
Discussion comments and pull request list entries use timestamp comparisons instead of lexicographic date-string comparisons. List tests check ordering across timestamp formats.
Timeline sort direction apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestTimeline.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestRouteScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestTimeline.test.tsx
The timeline row function accepts a sort direction and orders events accordingly. The route passes the selected direction and removes local row reversal and truncated-notice handling. Tests cover both sort directions and keep the truncation row last.

Reversing the oldest-first rows also reversed rows with the same
instant. Since timestamps now compare by instant, differently written
timestamps for one instant tie, and Newest first flipped them. Sort
with a descending comparator so ties keep their input order in both
directions; the truncation notice stays last.

Add a focused Activity ordering test at pullRequestTimelineRows.
Reuse the existing Activity fixture and add rows with equal instants in different offsets, an older distinct instant, and a truncation flag. Assert newest-first order, input order for the equal instants, and the truncation notice last.
This direct helper test can fail against the base ascending helper and verifies the new comparator direction and tie behavior. It does not detect a later reversal in usePullRequestActivityRows.

Add a focused test for pullRequestTimelineRows using the existing Activity
fixture, with equal instants represented by different offsets, an older distinct
instant, and a truncation flag. Assert newest-first ordering, preserved input
order for equal instants, and the truncation notice last; keep the test scoped
to this helper rather than usePullRequestActivityRows.
The list and timeline tests repeated the comparator's offset, fraction
and tie cases. The list test now checks that each sort mode orders its
own field by instant, and the timeline test checks direction and the
truncation notice; parsing and ties stay in time.test.ts.

Use offset timestamps for the created sort fixture.
Both createdAt values have the same textual and chronological order. The created assertion would still pass if that branch used lexical comparison.
Set entry 1 to 2026-07-01T00:30:00Z and entry 2 to 2026-07-01T01:00:00+02:00. The expected order remains [1, 2], but lexical sorting would fail.
As per coding guidelines, “logic, data, state, and protocol bugs get a failing test first.”
