Problem

A thread delegated a task to a linked machine, and a subagent there asked for approval. The parent thread showed "Subagent needs approval ... Open approval", but clicking Open approval (or the child's title) opened an empty New Thread view instead of the waiting thread.

Reproduce: from a thread on machine A, delegate_task to linked machine B in a mode that needs approvals, wait until the child asks for approval, then click Open approval in the parent's timeline.

Change

childThreadInputsAtom intentionally lists children on linked environments (see the "lists a task a linked environment runs for a listed thread under that thread" test), and each entry carries its own environmentId. The banner then dropped it: childInputNowItem called onOpenThread(child.id), and onOpenRelatedThread scoped that id to the current environment, so the route pointed at a thread that doesn't exist there.

  • web: onOpenRelatedThread takes an optional environment (defaulting to the current one, so its other callers are unchanged), and childInputNowItem passes each child's environmentId. The liveness check uses that environment too.
  • mobile: the same banner in ThreadDetailScreen opened childInput.id on props.environmentId. It now uses childInput.environmentId.

Scope and approval

This is a small, focused fix for an obvious bug: a button that is shown for remote children could never open one. It changes no product behavior for same-machine children, and it has no new UI.

Verification

  • Hit it in the desktop app: a parent on my Windows machine delegated to a linked machine, the child asked for approval, and Open approval landed on the empty New Thread view.
  • New focused test ThreadActivityBanners.browser.test.tsx: renders the item for a child on another environment, clicks Open approval, and asserts the handler gets the child's environment. It fails without the fix (called with the thread id only) and passes with it.
  • useThreadLifecycle.browser.test.tsx still passes. tsc --noEmit is clean for apps/web and apps/mobile, and vp fmt --check and vp lint pass.
  • Not checked: the end-to-end click on a fixed build against a real linked machine, and the mobile path on a device. The mobile change is the same one-field fix, covered by typecheck only.

The "Subagent needs approval" banner lists children on linked machines
but opened them on the current one, landing on an empty new thread.
Pass each child's environment through when opening it.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 85f1ac2

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Child approval and question links now open the delegated thread in its own environment on web and mobile. This is a narrow navigation correction that preserves existing behavior for other callers and does not itself approve actions or change permissions.

Walkthrough

Child-thread navigation now passes the child’s environment ID in the web and mobile flows. The web related-thread handler uses that environment ID to scope the thread reference and check environment liveness.

The web banner passes each child’s environment ID to related-thread handling. The handler uses it to scope the thread reference and check environment liveness. A browser test checks the thread and environment IDs passed to the callback. Mobile navigation passes the child’s environment ID.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related issues

  • pingdotgg/t3code#27005: The reported empty-thread behavior is consistent with using the parent environment; this change passes the child environment during navigation.
  • pingdotgg/t3code#27004: This change updates the pending-request banner route, but does not address the reported sidebar or Lineage omissions.

Nitpick Test the navigation destination through the lifecycle.

Test the navigation destination through the lifecycle.

The current test checks only mock callback arguments. Fold the regression case into useThreadLifecycle.browser.test.tsx: render lifecycle.childInputNow?.actions, click Open approval, and assert the router location uses remoteEnvironmentId and childId. This tests the banner-to-lifecycle path without adding a callback-wiring test.

takeover update at c17f1f125e2434f67fadc6adf97981abbea28889: merged current main with a merge commit and pushed to the existing fork branch without force. the three conflicts were comments only; main already contains the production navigation fix through #28592. kept main's comments and the contributor's regression test. the remaining diff against main is one file, 30 added lines.

blacksmith passed vp run check:changed e925dd681904f8a1ead0502ecca3f65f5bc28146 (format, lint, knip, affected typechecks, approval browser test) and vp test run apps/web/src/components/chat/useThreadLifecycle.browser.test.tsx (5 tests). two independent code reviews found no blockers at this head.

the optional lifecycle-routing test suggestion is deferred: the retained test catches lost child-environment forwarding, and the prior real-provider verification below covers the full navigation path. no production behavior changed in this pass. the real-provider/client flow was not repeated this run; the captures below are prior evidence at the original head.

Verified in a real dev environment

verified as-is at 85f1ac296e3b01c3caa6b43b9a626c8c0115c5f1. no code changes.

  • reproduced on github/main at 54c5f25249 in a separate worktree after vp i: a real supervised remote codex child requested approval; clicking Open approval opened an empty new-thread draft.
  • installed and ran the exact pr head with vp run dev, after stopping main. reused the same isolated database and pending child. repository playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome drove the web client at 1440×1000. projects were added through the app against a real git repo; all parent and child turns used codex gpt-6.1-sol through the local proxy.
  • Open approval and the banner child title both opened the exact child on its own environment and displayed its real approval request. approving the write and read completed the child; its result reached the parent and the banner cleared.
  • a same-environment supervised child also opened correctly, completed its approved write, and cleared the parent banner. the provider recovered transient retries during that local turn.
  • blacksmith: vp test run apps/web/src/components/chat/ThreadActivityBanners.browser.test.tsx apps/web/src/components/chat/useThreadLifecycle.browser.test.tsx passed, 2 files / 4 tests. head ci: 31 successful, 0 failing, 0 pending.

native ios/android and the electron desktop shell were not exercised on this linux vm. the two isolated environments ran as separate server processes on this vm over loopback; separate physical hosts, relay/tunnel networking and other providers remain unverified. the question variant was not exercised.
