The Claude effort picker listed Ultrathink next to the real effort levels. Ultrathink is a prompt keyword, not a saved setting, so it does not belong in the picker. People who want it can still type it.

The shared choice list now leaves out prompt-injected levels. That removes Ultrathink from the web effort menu, the mobile thread settings sheet, and keyboard effort stepping. If you type ultrathink or Ultrathink: in the prompt, it works as before: you still get the label, the frame, and the higher effort when you send. If you pick a normal level while an Ultrathink: prefix is in the prompt, it still removes the prefix. I also removed the code that only existed to insert the prefix from the picker.

Before After

Typed keyword still works:

Typed ultrathink still shows the Ultrathink label

After rebasing onto the combined model and effort control from #28057, the change still applies there because that control uses the same choice list.

Proof: the updated tests in composerProviderState.test.tsx and thread-settings-options.test.ts fail on main and pass here. vp run check:changed passes. I checked the before and after states manually in the dev web app with Claude Opus 5.5.

Reviewed with sol-loop: 1 pass with GPT-6.1 Sol. Sol verdict: approved. CodeRabbit then found a stepping-order regression, which is fixed with a test.

Created with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at b16abec

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Ultrathink is removed from effort pickers and keyboard cycling while remaining available through typed prompts. The change is limited to selection behavior and leaves default effort settings unchanged.

Walkthrough

Prompt-injected reasoning values are no longer selectable. Web reasoning-step handling now adjusts the prompt cursor and returns model options. Web and mobile handlers apply option changes through their update paths.

Changes: Reasoning option selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Prompt-injected trait selection
packages/client-runtime/src/modelTraits.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/thread-settings-options.test.ts
Selectable choices exclude prompt-injected values, and selecting one returns null. Tests expect ultrathink to be omitted.
Reasoning step selection and cursor updates
apps/web/src/components/chat/composerProviderState.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TraitsPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerProviderState.test.tsx
Reasoning steps use selectable choices and return model options. Cursor adjustment uses the prompt-length change. Tests cover effort cycling and removing a typed prefix.
Applying option changes
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TraitsPicker.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/ThreadSettingsSheet.tsx
Web handlers always pass modelOptions to their update functions. The mobile handler uses an empty options array when a select change lacks modelOptions.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete and matches the template's core sections in substance. It gives the problem (Ultrathink is a prompt keyword, not a saved setting, yet it appears in the Claude effort picker), the change (the shared choice list excludes prompt-injected levels, the picker-only prefix insertion code is removed, and typed keywords still work), and verification (updated tests that fail on main and pass on the branch, vp run check:changed passing, and a manual before/after check in the dev web app with Claude Opus 5.5). It also includes before/after screenshots for the UI change and names the model and harness used. Gaps: the template's Problem section asks for expected behavior and reproduction steps, which are only implied. The Scope and approval section is missing entirely: the description does not link a triaged bug issue or maintainer-approved discussion, and it does not explain why the fix qualifies without one. The Problem section does not state the expected behavior or environment in a clear form. The title is not shown in the description, so conventional-commit compliance cannot be verified from it.

Resolution

Add a "Scope and approval" section. Link the triaged bug issue or the discussion with explicit maintainer approval, including the approval comment. If no prior issue exists, explain why this is a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug, or why it is focused configuration of an established capability. Note that the description cites PR #28044 as the objective source, so confirm that a linked issue or approval exists for that scope. Add a short Problem statement with the expected behavior and reproduction steps or environment. Confirm the PR title follows the conventional commit format from the template comment.

Typing ultrathink in the prompt still works. The picker, the mobile
settings sheet, and keyboard effort stepping no longer offer it.
