fix(claude): context meter follows the /autocompact window - #27810
Running /autocompact 400k in a Claude thread changed when Claude compacts, but the thread's context meter still measured usage against the model's full 1M window. Claude Code saves that command per model in its own settings files, and T3 only read its own provider setting.
This is a focused bug fix: after a documented Claude command, the meter reports the wrong remaining context.
T3 now reads the window from Claude's local, project, and user settings files, after its own setting. In each file, the per-model value from /autocompact replaces the top-level one, and "auto" keeps Claude's default. The adapter now reports that window as the context size when it is below the model's, so the web meter and Thread details read "of 400k", as Claude's own /context does. The threshold stays the window minus 33k from #22654, and the tooltip and handoff budget still use it. No client code changes.
Before
After
Evidence
Adapter tests cover a per-model window beating the top-level one, project settings beating user settings, a per-model "auto" reset, T3's setting beating all files, and fractional values being ignored. The settings-file cases fail on main.
Out of scope: a window set only through CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_COMPACT_WINDOW or launch flags still shows the full model window, as on main.
A real Haiku turn in a project with a 100k per-model window showed "33k of 100k tokens used".
In collaboration with Opus 5.5 using Claude Code for implementation and GPT-6.1 Sol using Codex for verification.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The context meter now reflects Claude’s configured auto-compaction window, including model-specific settings. The change affects usage reporting and display without changing actual compaction behavior or product configuration defaults.

Walkthrough
Claude resolves a numeric auto-compaction window for each turn from settings files and uses it in token-usage updates. Web context-window calculations use the auto-compaction threshold when available instead of the provider’s maximum token count.

Summary
Resolve the per-turn auto-compaction window apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
Claude decodes numeric and "auto" values and resolves the window from settings files in precedence order. A positive T3 setting takes precedence; otherwise, model-specific values take precedence over the same file’s top-level value. Tests cover settings precedence and project settings lookup.
Use the resolved window in token usage apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts
Token-usage and compaction updates use the active turn’s resolved window. The usage function accepts an optional numeric window. Tests update related arguments and fixtures.
Use the threshold in context calculations apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.ts, apps/web/src/lib/contextWindow.test.ts
Live and provider-thread calculations prefer the auto-compaction threshold over the maximum token count when available. Tests check the resulting maximum, remaining tokens, and usage percentage.
The meter can report the wrong context limit, and startup timing may offer an unintended continuation. Merge with awareness of these issues.

The changed provider-thread path is not exercised by the updated test. Extend the existing provider-thread case with autoCompactThreshold: 150_000 and assert maxTokens, remainingTokens, and usedPercentage. This prevents a regression where live usage uses the threshold but restored Thread details uses maxTokens. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Resolve the inherited working directory for null-cwd turns.
4598-4611: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Resolve the inherited working directory for null-cwd turns.
When runtimePolicy.cwd is null, the SDK omits cwd and settingSources, so Claude loads project and local settings from the process working directory. resolveAutoCompactWindow reads only the user settings file in that case. If the inherited directory has a different autoCompactWindow, the meter can report a different compaction window from Claude.

Resolve relative CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR with the turn cwd.
When CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR is relative and the turn cwd differs from the server cwd, settingsFilesByPrecedence can read the wrong user settings file. resolveClaudeHomePath resolves the variable once without the turn cwd, but Claude receives the turn cwd as its process working directory and resolves the relative configuration path from there. The meter can therefore miss or use a different autoCompactWindow.

Keep the configured window as the context denominator.
ClaudeAdapterV2 sends the model context as maxTokens and the reserve-adjusted compaction point as autoCompactThreshold. For a configured 100,000-token window, the current web code therefore displays used / 67,000 and calculates percentages and remaining tokens against 67,000. ThreadDetailsUsage uses the same value in its used of maxTokens text.
Return the effective configured window as the usage maxTokens, retain autoCompactThreshold for the separate compaction message, and make both web branches use maxTokens.
Update ClaudeAdapterV2 at the provider-turn and compaction-boundary serialization sites so maxTokens is the configured autoCompactWindow when it is below the model context, while claudeAutoCompactThreshold(...) continues to serialize the reserve-adjusted threshold separately.

Like Claude's /context, the meter measures usage against the window, so
the web change is no longer needed. The window is also read before the
query opens.

Fixed the outside-diff finding on contextWindow.ts:67 in 09c5ad7. The adapter now reports the configured window as maxTokens when it is below the model context, and keeps the reserve-adjusted autoCompactThreshold for the compaction text and handoff budget. The web change is reverted, so contextWindow.ts matches main again.
