fix(server): message search without the index finds words typed with a curly apostrophe - #27267
Thread search treats curly and straight apostrophes as the same character. indexedMessageText writes message text into the trigram index with ’/‘ replaced by ', messageSearchTokens folds the query the same way, and a test covers this for the indexed path ("finds a curly apostrophe for a straight one and back"). Part of messageHitsQuery was missed: the substring check (instr(lower(json_extract(messages.payload_json, '$.text')), token.value)) reads the raw text, which still has the curly apostrophe.
That check is the whole filter when search scans messages: on an SQLite build without FTS5 trigrams, or when the query has a two-character CJK word. It also runs for short tokens on the indexed path. So, without the index, searching gannet's does not find a message that reads the gannet’s nest. iOS keyboards type ’ by default, so messages written on a phone have curly apostrophes, and queries typed on a desktop have straight ones. messageMatcher already accepts both forms, so SQL drops rows the JS matcher would keep.
Change
The substring check now reads indexedMessageText(sql, "messages.payload_json"), the same straightened text the index stores, instead of the raw $.text. The query side and the indexed path are unchanged.
Scope and approval
This is a one-line fix for an obvious bug, so it has no prior issue. Apostrophe folding is existing behavior: it already has a helper, a comment in messageSearchTokens ("The index stores apostrophes straight, as indexedMessageText writes them"), and a test for the indexed path. The scan path did not use the same helper, so it gave a different result for the same query. No schema, migration, contract or client change.
#22553 edits the same instr(...) line for a different problem (quote text in search_text). If both land, the fix here applies to its COALESCE(...) expression the same way.
Verification
In apps/server:
New test ThreadSearch without the index > finds a curly apostrophe for a straight one and back in src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSearch.test.ts. It drops orchestration_v2_message_search, then searches gannet's against the gannet’s nest, and kittiwake’s against a kittiwake's nest.
With ThreadSearch.ts restored from upstream/main (vp test run src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSearch.test.ts):
× finds a curly apostrophe for a straight one and back
- [ "thread:scan-apostrophe-curly" ]
+ []
Tests 1 failed | 23 passed (24)
With the fix: Tests 24 passed (24).
Sibling tests: src/mcp/toolkits/core.test.ts, src/persistence/Migrations/069_ThreadMessageSearch.test.ts and src/persistence/DatabaseMaintenance.test.ts pass (20 of 20).
vp lint --report-unused-disable-directives src/orchestration-v2 and vp fmt --check src/orchestration-v2: clean. tsc --noEmit in apps/server: exit 0.
Not checked: a real client against an SQLite build without FTS5 trigrams. The test reaches the same code path by dropping the index table, which is what the existing CJK scan test does.
…a curly apostrophe
The search index stores message text with curly apostrophes straightened, and
queries are straightened the same way. The substring check that the scan path
(no FTS5 trigram index, or a two-character CJK word) and short tokens rely on
read the raw text instead, so "gannet's" never matched "the gannet’s nest".
Check the same straightened text the index stores.

Walkthrough
Thread substring matching now uses indexedMessageText instead of reading text directly from the message payload. A new test checks searches with opposite apostrophe styles when the message-search index is absent.

Summary
Substring matching and fallback test apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSearch.ts, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSearch.test.ts
messageHitsQuery uses indexedMessageText for substring checks. A test drops the message-search index and verifies matches between straight and curly apostrophes.
The production fix is supported, but a focused indexed-path regression assertion should still be added as follow-up.

Cover the indexed short-token path before dropping the index.
The existing indexed apostrophe test uses only one long token, so it does not exercise the changed substring predicate with an apostrophe token. Add the mixed long/short query before dropping the table, then retain the scan-path assertions.

Profiling follow-up: #28930 optimizes single-token grading after the SQL candidate prefilter. It preserves returned quality/offset and does not change apostrophe handling or replace this SQL fix. The final diff contains matcher logic and prewritten tests only.
