fix(web): Shift+Tab moves a nested composer list item back out - #27016
Tab nests a composer list item under the one above, but Shift+Tab does not move it back out. Outside code blocks, Shift+Tab goes to the Build/Plan toggle: with plan mode off (the default) the item stays nested and focus leaves the composer, and with plan mode on it switches modes instead. For an item with text, Backspace at the start of the line was the only way back.
Shift+Tab on an indented list line now moves it to its parent's indent before the Build/Plan toggle runs. When the item and its parent are numbered with the same delimiter, it continues the parent's numbering and renumbers the parent's later items, using the helpers Tab and Shift+Enter already use. Otherwise it keeps its number. With no list item above, it undoes one step of Tab's two-space fallback. Top-level and non-list lines keep their current behavior, including switching Build/Plan when plan mode is on.
https://git.cafe/pingdotgg/t3code/pulls/17138 added Tab nesting and deliberately left Shift+Tab alone. This follow-up gives list outdenting the precedence over Build/Plan that code-block outdenting already has, and only at a collapsed caret on an indented list line. It is submitted as a small fix for an obvious bug: it adds the missing reverse of an existing shortcut and changes nothing else.
Verification
vp test run apps/web/src/composer-list-continuation.test.ts: 25 passed and 6 failed on main (the new cases), 31 passed on this branch. The new cases: Shift+Tab undoes Tab for a bullet, a numbered item and an indented numbered item with no list above, restoring text, number and caret; outdenting a numbered item renumbers the parent list, and one under a bullet keeps its number; a top-level item is left alone so Build/Plan still runs.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), tests and React compiler pass.
Real web app (vp run dev, isolated empty state, no provider turn), Helium at a 1192×969 viewport:
Rich composer on main: - parent, Shift+Enter, child, Tab nests it, then Shift+Tab leaves it nested and moves focus to the thread title.
Rich composer on this branch: Shift+Tab returns child beside parent with focus and caret kept at the end of child. 1. first, Shift+Enter, second, Tab, Shift+Tab returns second to 2..
Plan mode (Settings, Labs, Legacy) on: Shift+Tab on a nested line outdents and leaves the mode alone; on a top-level line it switches Build to Plan.
Plain composer (rich text off): 1. second returns to 2. second.
Captured at 1e95a81. The two follow-up commits only change items with no numbered parent list to join, which the tests cover.
Web and desktop share this composer; mobile does not use this helper. Nothing crosses the wire, and no provider or MCP surface is involved. Not checked: the Electron desktop shell, Windows, Safari and Firefox. Like Tab, Shift+Tab acts on a collapsed caret, not on a selection spanning several lines.

rechecked the merged head in the real web app using playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome: tab nests a bullet item, shift+tab outdents it with focus retained; the numbered flow also returns the child to the parent list. this pass did not repeat native desktop/mobile, other browsers, remote connections, or provider submission. earlier provider evidence remains in the verification comment.

the same way fenced code blocks already take Shift+Tab.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Shift+Tab now outdents nested composer list items and adjusts ordered numbering, while preserving the existing fallback elsewhere. The change is limited to guarded, user-invoked draft editing and carries no obvious material operational or data risk.

The composer now supports outdenting nested list items with Shift+Tab. The change adds list-edit logic, connects it to keyboard handling, adds tests, and updates the composer instructions.

listOutdentForTab calculates an outdent edit for eligible list items. For ordered lists, it can update the item marker and renumber following siblings. Tests cover indentation, caret position, renumbering, and top-level items.
Connect outdent to composer keys apps/web/src/components/chat/composerCommandKey.ts, docs/user/composer.md
Shift+Tab tries list outdent before the existing plan-mode toggle. Enter and unshifted Tab use the shared list-edit helper. The composer instructions now describe Shift+Tab outdent.

Explanation
The title "fix(web): Shift+Tab moves a nested composer list item back out" matches the main change: Shift+Tab now outdents a nested list item in the composer before the Build/Plan toggle runs. It follows the conventional commit format the template asks for and names the component and behavior, so a teammate scanning history can identify the change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections. It explains that Shift+Tab on an indented list line never outdented, because Build/Plan ran first. The Change section states the new precedence and the numbering behavior, with a fallback for lines with no list above. The Scope section cites the prior Tab PR and argues the change qualifies as a small fix of an obvious bug, which the template permits. The Verification section gives specific test counts, the test case list, manual checks in rich and plain composers and in Plan mode, a before/after table with screenshots and recordings, and lists what was not checked. It also names the model and harness used. Minor gaps: the 'Problem' section is folded into the opening paragraph rather than headed separately, and the description has conflicting figures (25 passed/6 failed in one place, 25 passed/5 failed in the objectives; 31 passed here, 30 in the objectives), and the 'takeover verification' section adds a second verification round without reconciling those counts. The description also lacks a conventional commit title, which the template asks for, though that is a title matter rather than a description one.

A test that only asserts toggleInteractionMode or applyPromptReplacement calls would violate the callback-wiring rule. The existing helper tests do not detect a handler regression where nested Shift+Tab toggles mode instead of outdenting. Add a handler-level test that asserts the resulting prompt and mode state for both nested and top-level items.

Find parents across continuation lines.
For 1. parent\n detail\n 1. child\n2. next, listMarkersAbove stops at detail, so this lookup misses the parent. Shift+Tab produces 1. child and leaves the following item numbered 2, instead of producing 2. child and 3. next. Allow parent lookup to cross continuation lines that belong to the list item. reproduced on github/main (32ecd71726) in /home/user/main: type - parent, shift+enter, child, tab, shift+tab. the child stays nested and focus leaves the composer. the ordered-list equivalent also stays nested.
stopped main before starting the exact pr head. created the project through add project → local folder, pointing at /home/user/t3code.
on the pr, the same keys return the child to its parent indentation and retain editor focus and the caret at the end of child. ordered items return to 2.; outdenting between a parent and its next sibling renumbers that sibling to 3..
with legacy plan mode enabled through settings, nested shift+tab outdents while retaining build mode; top-level shift+tab switches to plan, and the reverse switches back. code-block tab/shift+tab still adds/removes leading indentation without switching mode.
with rich text disabled through settings, the typed ordered-list flow also returns the child to 2.. an orphan 7. child survives tab then shift+tab with its original indentation and number.
submitted an ordered prompt after tab/shift+tab through the web composer to codex gpt-6.1-sol. the provider returned composer verification ready. and the client rendered it. the persisted run is completed with that exact model and assistant text.

native electron, ios/android, macos/windows, firefox/safari, and remote relay/tunnel connections were not exercised on this linux chromium vm. mobile uses a separate composer. other providers were not exercised; this change stays in the web composer before submission.
upstream ci is not green: the reported snapshot has 14 failing and 14 successful contexts. the latest aggregate check log reports cancelled lint/build/test jobs. the focused blacksmith checks above passed; this comment does not claim the full ci suite passed. main also needed a reload to show its completed provider reply; the pr reply rendered without that reload.
