Resizing a PNG or JPEG for a mobile attachment leaves the generated cache file behind. This happens after successful imports and when the resized output is rejected by the attachment size limit. The attachment already retains the image bytes, but the generated file has no cleanup owner.
Change
Have fitComposerImage consume and delete its generated file before returning the resized bytes. Use those bytes for resized photo, document, and pasted-image previews. The shared helper also covers incoming image shares on iOS and Android. Original images are preserved, and the existing size limits and document fallback still apply.
Keep previewUri in persisted draft and outbox records so older embedded bundles can read them after an OTA rollback. The shared reader also restores it from inline bytes when loading compact records written by interim PR commits. File-backed images and distinct preview URIs retain their existing fields. Inline preview-byte deduplication is deferred until compatible readers or an explicit storage migration are available.
Scope and approval
This addresses the existing resize-cache cleanup gap reported by @maria-rcks. It is a small, focused fix for an obvious resource-cleanup bug under CONTRIBUTING.md's exception. The regression exists on upstream main independently of the Android drag/drop PR. The persistence compatibility handling preserves the fields required by rollback bundles and recovers interim compact payloads without changing the current write versions.
Verification
Four PNG/JPEG paste regressions for accepted and oversized rejected output fail on main (dac8b11ddc25) because the rendered file remains, and pass with the fix. They also check data-backed previews and preservation of original files.
Rollback regressions fail before the compatibility fix because the strict legacy image reader rejects the written JSON with a missing previewUri. They now read the actual serialized live/archived drafts and per-message outbox records using the legacy required-preview schema, keeping draft version 1 and outbox version 3. Tests also recover compact live/archived drafts and queues from the interim commits, preserve file-backed/distinct previews, and read legacy v1 messages. All 114 draft/outbox tests passed.
vp run check:changed upstream/main: passed format, lint, knip, affected mobile/scripts typechecks, and all 178 adjacent image, picker, draft, and outbox tests. git diff --check passed.
vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/sharing/incoming-share-model.test.ts: 19 passed.
Native Android 11 / API 30: built and installed the matching development client. A temporary test screen called the production convertPastedImagesToAttachments, Expo filesystem/image APIs, the existing preview materializer, and React Native images, without native API mocks. Compared main's image helpers (dac8b11ddc25) with the initial cleanup fix (63ed8d988b) using a synthetic 3200×2400 PNG and JPEG. Main left one generated resize file per format; the fix left zero. Both runs produced 2000×1500 images (PNG: 66,198 bytes; JPEG: 461,304 bytes). The owned pasted PNG was deleted, the original JPEG was retained, and both preview load callbacks completed. Temporary source overlays and QA files were removed.
The native pass covers image cleanup and preview loading at 63ed8d988b; the subsequent persistence changes have automated round-trip coverage. It does not establish an end-to-end picker/drop/send test. Oversized rejection uses mocked native APIs in the regression tests. Native iOS and physical devices were not exercised.
Consume the cached resize output in fitComposerImage and return only its retained bytes. Build resized previews from those bytes so accepted, rejected, and fallback attachments do not leave untracked cache files.
Cover PNG and JPEG cleanup for accepted and rejected pastes, preserve original files, and check generated-file cleanup in photo and document picker regressions.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Generated resize files are removed after their bytes are retained, with previews switched to data-backed images. The cleanup is confined to generated artifacts and preserves original photos and existing attachment behavior.

Image fitting returns base64 data and attempts to delete rendered files. Document-picked, library-picked, and pasted fitted images use data URLs for previews. Tests cover rendered-file cleanup and accepted or oversized rendered output.
The persisted attachment schema allows eligible inline images to omit previewUri and restores it from dataUrl when decoding. Draft and outbox persistence use this schema. Tests cover attachment round-trips and records without previewUri.

Deduplicate fitted image fields in persisted drafts.
Fitted document, library, and pasted images store the same data URL in dataUrl and previewUri. Draft persistence serializes both fields after a 200 ms debounce, so edits can repeatedly serialize duplicate image bytes.
The per-image size is bounded by PROVIDER_SEND_TURN_MAX_IMAGE_BYTES, but the source does not show typical image sizes or actual save frequency. This establishes avoidable serialization and file-write work, not a demonstrated major performance regression.
previewUri is required by the persisted schema and is consumed directly by preview code. Do not remove it without changing hydration. Persist one copy only for data-backed images, then reconstruct previewUri from dataUrl; preserve existing file-backed and non-data-backed preview paths.

Store matching data-backed preview bytes once in live and archived drafts, then reconstruct the required preview URI during hydration. Preserve explicit file-backed and distinct preview paths.
Add a regression that fails before the storage change and checks both the serialized file and a full draft reload.
Addressed @coderabbitai's persisted-preview duplication nitpick in a3e148d. Live and archived drafts omit previewUri only when it duplicates an inline image's dataUrl; decoding reconstructs the required runtime field. File-backed images, distinct preview URIs, and legacy explicit previews remain supported.
The new regression failed before this change and now passes through a real draft write/reload using the existing filesystem mock. All 77 draft tests and vp run check:changed upstream/main passed, including 141 adjacent tests and affected typechecks.
Also completed a native Android 11 filesystem/preview comparison for the cleanup code at 63ed8d988b: main left one generated resize file per PNG/JPEG; the fix left zero. Both resized images decoded at 2000×1500, their preview load callbacks completed, the owned paste source was deleted, and the original JPEG was retained. This used the production image pipeline and real Expo APIs in a temporary test screen. The PR description records the exact scope and remaining platform/interaction limits.
Deduplicate identical inline previews in queued-message persistence.
Fitted photo attachments now set previewUri to the same data URI as dataUrl. Queued messages retain both fields because both the per-message outbox writer and the signed-out queuedMessages writer call encodeQueuedThreadMessage. Each affected persisted message therefore stores the full fitted image bytes twice.
Apply the same narrow encode/decode mapping used for drafts at the shared queued-message boundary: omit previewUri only when fileUri is absent, dataUrl is an inline data: URI, and both values are identical. Restore previewUri during decode. Preserve file-backed attachments and distinct preview URIs.

@12ya Thanks for addressing the persisted-preview duplication concern in a3e148d0aa. The reported write/reload regression covers both deduplication and preview reconstruction, while preserving file-backed images, distinct preview URIs, and legacy explicit previews.
The Android 11 comparison provides native evidence for generated-file cleanup, preview loading, and original-file preservation. That evidence is limited to the tested Android paths; it does not establish iOS or untested interaction behavior.
I have not independently rerun these checks. No further change is requested for the duplication concern.

Reuse the persisted attachment codec for outbox messages as well as live and archived drafts. This also covers queued messages saved during sign-out, without duplicating the preview mapping.
Verify the actual outbox and archive JSON, preview restoration after reload, legacy message decoding, and preservation of file-backed and distinct previews.
Drafts and queued messages now share the same persisted attachment codec. This covers both per-message outbox files and queued messages archived during sign-out. Matching inline previews are omitted on write and restored on decode; file-backed attachments and distinct preview URIs retain their fields.
The outbox-file and archived-queue regressions both failed before the fix. All 114 draft/outbox tests now pass, including an explicit legacy v1 image-message decode. vp run check:changed upstream/main also passed all 178 adjacent tests, affected typechecks, format, lint, and knip.

Hydration restores compact attachments in memory, but no inspected hydration or subscription path persists them. The base bundle requires previewUri and can reject the complete composer-drafts document. Add a safe atomic migration write after successful hydration, with recovery if that write fails.

expoThreadOutboxStorage.load restores previewUri only in memory and returns the message without rewriting its file. Delivery writes only when persistUploadedReferences runs, so a recovered message can remain compact on disk. After an OTA rollback, the older bundle rejects that file because its image schema requires previewUri, and the queued message is omitted from the deliverable queue. Persist the recovered message atomically before publishing it, while preserving records that already contain explicit previews.
