feat(web): gauge option for the composer's effort display - #26802
Effort display can show the level as a word or as bars. This adds a third option, Gauge: the Lucide gauge already used for the effort control, with its needle on the selected level and the arc filled up to it.
Summary
EffortDisplay = "label" | "bars"
+ | "gauge"
<TraitsPicker>
resolveEffortGlyph() # unchanged: count / filled
- <EffortGlyph /> # bars+ effortDisplay === "gauge"+ ? <EffortGauge /> # needle 180° → 0° across the levels; off rests at 210° with no fill+ : <EffortGlyph />
The gauge reads the same count and filled as the bars, so levels sit in the same order. Max, Ultracode and Ultrathink still show their names.
Evidence
Codex (GPT-6 Astra) at each level, captured in a dev build with Effort display set to Bars, then Gauge. The composer controls were rendered at 4x with a CSS transform, so they are sharp rather than upscaled:

EffortGlyph.test.ts adds an effortGaugeAngle case: four levels land at 180°, 120°, 60° and 0°, off at 210°, and a single level at 0°. vp run check:changed passes (format, lint, knip, typecheck of 32 packages, tests in 3 files). Not checked: the xs composer size and mobile, which has no effort glyph.

A new setting value. A client from before this change that reads a saved "gauge" would fail to decode it, the same as for any added literal.

Only the composer's effort control when Gauge is chosen. Word stays the default, and Bars is unchanged.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds an optional gauge for the composer's effort indicator while preserving the existing default and reasoning behavior. The change is confined to presentation and its appearance preference.

The effort display setting now includes a gauge option. When selected, the traits picker renders a muted arc and a needle, with a highlighted arc when effort is filled.

Summary
Add the gauge setting packages/contracts/src/settings.ts, apps/web/src/components/settings/AppearanceSettingsPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/settings/settingsSearch.ts
The EffortDisplay contract and appearance selector now accept gauge. The selector labels and describes the option, and settings search includes it.
Render the effort gauge apps/web/src/components/chat/EffortGlyph.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/TraitsPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/EffortGlyph.test.ts
EffortGlyph.tsx adds the gauge angle calculation and SVG rendering. TraitsPicker uses the gauge when the selected display is gauge and the effort glyph has no word label. Tests check gauge angles for filled levels, an empty gauge, and a single-level gauge.

Saving the Gauge setting can make settings unreadable by older desktop builds, so cross-version compatibility should be addressed before merging.

Preserve compatibility with older desktop builds.
If a user selects Gauge in a newer build and then opens an older build, the older ClientSettingsSchema rejects the entire settings document. Packaged builds share the same settings directory across release channels. The older client then cannot load or save client settings. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Store Gauge in a backward-compatible field, or keep the persisted effortDisplay value valid for older clients.

This is true, but I'm leaving it out of this PR. Adding any new choice to a client settings dropdown has the same downgrade problem, because the desktop app decodes ClientSettingsSchema strictly (apps/desktop/src/settings/DesktopClientSettings.ts). #26138 recently added nightly-artwork and dev-artwork to EnvironmentIdentificationMode the same way.
A separate field just for the gauge would fix this one setting and nothing else. The general fix is to make the settings read tolerate unknown values, for example by falling back to each field's default. That changes how every setting is read, so it should be its own PR rather than part of this one.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@PedroNavHur Understood. A shared settings-read fix belongs in a separate PR. I won’t press for a Gauge-specific field here.
The downgrade risk remains valid but deferred, rather than fixed. The follow-up should verify that an unknown setting value falls back without preventing other settings from loading or saving.
Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for that follow-up?
When filled === count, effortGaugeAngle returns 0, but the background arc ends at -30°. The filled path therefore leaves a visible 30° gap at full effort. Map filled levels from the arc start (210°) to its end (-30°), while keeping the off state at 210°.

Update effortGaugeAngle so filled levels map across the full gauge arc from 210°
to -30°, including a full-arc endpoint when filled equals count; preserve the
off-state angle at 210°.

Effort display gains a third choice beside Word and Bars: Lucide's
gauge, with the needle at the selected level and the arc filled up to
it. The needle sweeps left to right across the levels the bars count,
and an off level rests it at the arc's start with no fill.
