Problem

The sidebar is one flat list. With many agents running, there is no way to keep reviews, fixes, or one feature's threads together, and an agent cannot tidy the list for you. @maria-rcks designed thread folders in #12182; it was closed only because the server was being rewritten for V2, with an invitation to open a fresh PR against the new code.

Change

This brings thread folders to the V2 server, keeps Maria's folder card, and follows her model: a folder owns all of its threads.

  • Server.
    • Folders are environment-wide sidebar presentation, so they live in plain SQLite tables (migrations 076 and 077), not in thread events.
    • ThreadFolderService owns create, rename, recolor, reorder, delete, and move. Writes are serialized and transactional. A thread sits in at most one folder.
    • Clients subscribe to threadFolders.subscribe (read scope) and mutate through threadFolders.mutate (operate scope). Older servers do not advertise threadFolders, so clients hide the UI.
  • Collect new threads.
    • Collecting is opt-in per folder (autoFile on the wire). When on, a folder files new threads by topic (the folder name's meaning, {smart:true}), by branches, by worktrees, or any mix of them: each option adds threads, and choosing one again turns it off. Agents can also set title words, projects, providers, or "has a pull request". The deterministic matcher lives once in @t3tools/shared/threadFolderRule, with a linear glob matcher.
    • By topic costs no extra model call. The thread-title call also returns a folderId chosen from the by-topic folders whose other rule conditions match. It reads the first message, branch, worktree, project, and PR, plus up to 5 titles of threads the user filed there by hand. The pick applies only if that title request was still current, so a replaced or cancelled request files nothing. It never applies to a settled, already-filed, or hand-moved thread.
    • A thread a deterministic rule filed moves on when it stops matching. A thread a person or agent placed is never moved.
    • A rule-free folder named for the branch or worktree that all of its threads share (compared as slugs, so "Login" matches feature/login) adopts that rule with collecting on when it is created, renamed, or given threads. A feature folder spanning branches stays by topic. An explicit autoFile: false and linked MCP callers never adopt one. Choosing Off keeps it off.
    • Add related threads (folder.applyRule) is in every folder's menu and files existing unfiled, unsettled matches once, including threads once moved out by hand: by its rule, or, without one, by the branch or worktree its name points at, else by topic. By topic, threads whose project, branch, worktree, or title names the folder go in without a model call ("Fleet" takes the fleet project's threads); the model classifies the rest in parallel batches of 50. If the folder is renamed or its rule changes while the model runs, the action fails instead of filing for the old folder.
    • Migration 077 adds the rule, order, and explicit-move columns, so databases that ran an earlier build of this branch keep their folders. Main took migrations 073 to 075, so the folder migrations are 076 and 077.
  • Icons. A new folder gets a Lucide icon and color from the first matching word of its name ("mobile" is a blue phone, "Fleet" a green bot), or a gray folder. Renaming re-picks it only while it is still the picked one. Mobile draws each as a native symbol.
  • Agents. t3_thread_folder lists, creates, updates, reorders, deletes, moves, and applies rules, with rule (including {smart:true}) and autoFile on create and update.
    • list is a read. move and a rule-free create check access to each thread.
    • Any write that sets a rule, and the other actions, need environment write access. Linked peers cannot use them.
    • The tool says folders group threads, not files, after an agent read "a folder with all mobile changes" as code. An eval case covers that request.
    • The tool list grows, and agentContextBudget.json records the new size, so this needs the agent-context-increase label.
  • Web.
    • Maria's tinted cards sit above Pinned. A folder holds its pinned, active, snoozed, and settled threads, which collapse with it. The status dot counts only live work.
    • When every thread in a folder is settled, the folder moves to the Settled shelf, collapsed, card and all. A hover button on the folder header settles or un-settles the whole folder in one click.
    • Drag a thread onto a folder to file it, or onto a loose thread to unfile it. Drag a folder header to reorder; folders always stay above loose threads. Right-click empty sidebar space for New folder.
    • Folder menu: Rename, Customize…, Collect new threads (Off / By topic / By branch ▸ recent branches / By worktree ▸ recent worktrees; inline on Android, whose menus nest one level), Add related threads (reads "Adding related threads…" while it runs), Move up/down, Settle folder, Delete folder ▸ Keep its threads / Delete its threads too (N). Branches and worktrees are picked, not typed: the folder's own threads first, then the most recent. A rule an agent set shows as "Set by an agent".
    • Customize sets the name and an icon over the full Lucide set, any emoji, or letters, with a one-row preview.
    • The menu choices come from shared client-runtime helpers, so web and mobile offer the same options.
    • Settings → General → Folder style (web and desktop): Cards, the default and unchanged, or Tab groups, which draws a folder as a colored name pill with a colored line beside its threads, like Helium's tab groups. Mobile keeps its own native folder rows.
  • Mobile. The same model: folders own all members, and settled folders sit collapsed under Settled. It also has the Collect new threads submenu, Settle folder, the same Delete folder choice, and section-aware Move up/down.

Scope and approval

Maintainer invitation for a fresh PR once V2 landed: #12182 (comment). This keeps #12182's design and scope (folders, icon and color, collapse, settle, mod+g), and moves storage onto V2 as environment-wide state. The new parts are agent access through MCP, opt-in rules with smart auto-file, and drag and drop. AGENTS.md asks that a capability a user can trigger also be reachable by agents.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: format, knip, and typecheck of 36 packages pass, and 987 tests pass. It flagged a pull request glyph literal (lint) and a try/finally the React Compiler cannot lower; both are fixed, and lint, the React Compiler coverage for the changed files, and their tests pass on the final tree. 2 browser test files timed out connecting to the browser on the dev host; the sidebar browser tests pass when rerun alone.
  • Focused tests. Each new behavior or fix has a case that fails on the old code:
    • Rule matcher: globs (including a hostile pattern), word-start title words, and smart-only rules that never match deterministically.
    • ThreadFolderService:
      • auto-file is off by default;
      • the first matching folder wins;
      • explicit moves are left alone, and rule-filed threads move on;
      • smart picks are validated, and skipped for settled, filed, or hand-moved threads;
      • a smart applyRule batch covers unsettled threads only;
      • hand-filed titles are passed as examples;
      • a folder named for a member's branch collects it, and a rule-free folder adds related threads.
    • Title service: the folder pick of a request replaced or cancelled while the model ran is dropped.
    • Title prompt: the schema Codex receives marks every property as required. Strict structured output rejected an optional folderId in a real run.
    • MCP: a linked caller cannot create a folder with a rule. Migration 077 keeps the existing order.
    • Web: folder fold (all shelves; settled folders collapsed and hidden under a closed shelf) and shared section-aware reorder.
    • Mobile: settled folders at section edges and collapsed, section-aware moves, and opt-in.
  • Real app on a dev database seeded from real data:
    • one-click settle and un-settle;
    • settled folders collapsed under Settled;
    • Customize saving a by-topic, opted-in folder;
    • round 4: a new folder's Collect new threads ▸ By branch listed real branches; picking main saved {"branches":["main"]} with collecting on, and the menu then read "By branch: main";
    • round 6: "Design fixes" got a pink palette icon (a first live run picked the bug icon; the first matching word now wins), a closed folder's count sits at the row end, and the sparkles icon is gone;
    • round 5: a thread on t3/maintainer-edit-access moved into a new "Maintainer edit access" folder made it collect that branch by itself; the menu read "By branch: t3/maintainer-edit-access", and Add related threads ran without error. A "Research" folder with no matching branch got no rule;
    • a new thread, "Checkout shows a blank page after paying with a saved card. Find out why and patch it.", filed into a by-topic Fixes folder by the title call;
    • a research thread left unfiled;
    • the round-2 flows (empty-space New folder, drag in, drag out, drag reorder).
    • round 7: one folder collecting by topic, main, and a worktree saved {"smart":true,"branches":["main"],"worktrees":["t3-6b73adb7"]} and the menu read "By branch: main" / "By worktree: t3-6b73adb7". Delete its threads too (1) confirmed, then deleted the folder and its thread; Keep its threads deleted only the folder. A thread moved out by hand came back with Add related threads on a folder named for its project, in about 0.6 s with no model call. Clicking a folder header no longer leaves its actions shown.
  • Reviewed with sol-loop: 4 rounds with gpt-6.1-sol on this round. Sol verdict: approved. Sol found five issues, all fixed with tests:
    • settled threads could be smart-filed;
    • a replaced or cancelled title request could still file a thread (two rounds to close);
    • mobile moves could cross environments;
    • Muse dropped the folder pick.
  • Round 4 (menu redesign and the mid-sort race): sol-loop, 2 rounds with gpt-6.1-sol. Sol verdict: approved. Sol found that a switch from a by-topic rule to a branch rule during the model call skipped the stale check; fixed with a test.
  • Round 5 ("Add related threads" and name-matched collecting): sol-loop, 1 round with gpt-6.1-sol. Sol verdict: approved. Its one nit (the rule-free by-topic test filed nothing new) is fixed.
  • Round 6 (feedback, icons, three Macroscope findings): sol-loop, 2 rounds with gpt-6.1-sol. Sol verdict: approved. Sol found that mobile drew letters for seven picked icons; fixed with a test that every pickable icon has a native symbol.
  • Macroscope's fifteen findings are fixed or no longer apply; each has a reply on its thread. The last four:
    • a rename or rule change while "Collect existing threads now" waited on the model could file threads for the old folder;
    • "File matching unsettled threads now" stopped after the first 100 threads; it now classifies all of them in batches of 100.
    • the title call could be offered a folder whose other rule conditions miss the thread;
    • dragging a loose settled thread overlapped a settled folder card.

Not checked:

  • The native mobile UI on a device. Only tests and typecheck ran.
  • The native Electron menu. The browser fallback menu was tested.
  • The MCP eval cases in evals/mcp-tool-use. Running them costs money.
  • No new screenshots this round, at the developer's request. The images below are from round 1.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Adds shared sidebar folders with agent access, rules, and automatic filing. Human review must accept the new mod+g default and automatic branch/worktree collection behavior for qualifying folders.

1488-1488: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Remove or replace the vacuous pinned assertion.

pinned is absent from both fold inputs. Its ID appears only in folder.threadIds, so foldSidebarThreadFolders cannot place the fixture in a block. The assertion passes even if pinned threads enter the fold inputs.

Move this check to a test that runs partitionSidebarThreads before folding. That boundary test can protect the pinned-folder settlement regression. The testing guidance supports this correction because it requires coverage for breakable bug-fix logic at the lowest layer that detects the regression.

🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Bil0000

This needs the agent-context-increase label. The new t3_thread_folder tool grows mcpToolListJsonBytes from 45842 to 46839 (+997 bytes) in apps/server/src/provider/agentContextBudget.json. Most of that is the icon schema, which agents already know from t3_project_update. The prompt budgets are unchanged.

Resolve the failing agent-context budget check.

The supplied CI run rejects the increase from 45907 to 46904 bytes because it exceeds the main-branch budget. Reduce the added tool text or add the required agent-context-increase label, then confirm the check passes. The budget test documents that label requirement. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Reduce the added tool text contributing to mcpToolListJsonBytes so the measured

Keeping the budget increase. The +997 bytes are the new t3_thread_folder tool definition, which is the feature itself: it lets agents list, create, move, rename and delete sidebar folders. Trimming it to fit the old budget would remove that capability. A maintainer label request for agent-context-increase is already on the PR.

@Bil0000 Understood. Keep the budget increase for t3_thread_folder; I will not press for trimming the tool definition.

The maintainer label request is noted. The remaining verification is that agent-context-increase is applied and the budget check passes. Neither is verified in this reply.

Check for an existing folder before validating a create.

If the 200th folder is created but its response is lost, a retry fails at this limit check before reaching the new no-op guard. A retry also fails if an original member has since been deleted. Check for the existing folder ID first, inside the transaction.

@coderabbitai re the outside-diff finding on ThreadFolderService.ts:171 (check for an existing folder before validating a create): fixed in 4cd96bb. folder.create now looks up the folder id first, inside the same serialized transaction, and returns early when it exists, before the 200-folder limit and live-thread checks run. The ON CONFLICT ... RETURNING guard is gone because the lookup covers it. ThreadFolderService.test.ts now replays the create with a deleted thread in threadIds; that case failed with "Thread thread:deleted does not exist" before the fix.

@Bil0000 Confirmed by source inspection. folder.create now checks for an existing folder inside the serialized transaction, before the folder limit and live-thread checks.

The regression test replays the create with a deleted thread and checks that folder membership and the existing icon remain unchanged. This addresses the finding. I did not run the tests.

A reactor files new threads into the first enabled folder whose rule matches,
and moves a rule-filed thread on when it stops matching. Threads a person or
agent placed are never moved. folder.applyRule files existing matches,
folder.reorder orders folders, and threadFolders.suggestRule asks the text
model for a rule. Migration 074 adds the rule columns, since 073 has shipped.
The MCP folder tool gains reorder, apply_rule, rule and autoFile.

Folders own all their threads, and move to Settled once every thread is
settled. Drag threads into or out of folders, drag folders to reorder, and
right-click empty space for New folder. The folder menu gains Customize,
Auto-file behavior, Move up/down, and Settle/Un-settle folder. The icon
picker searches every Lucide icon and accepts any emoji.

Auto-file is off until a folder turns it on. A title result that was
replaced or cancelled while the model ran no longer files the thread, and
settled threads are never auto-filed. Linked MCP callers cannot create a
folder rule that would reach threads outside their scope.

Settled folders start collapsed, and a header button settles or un-settles

Fixed in 7cbd904. createSidebarSortingStrategy now measures the gap between settled-placeholder and the first loose settled row, which is where settled folder cards render, and adds it before the first projected settled row. The new case in Sidebar.drag.test.ts ("keeps settled folder space above loose settled rows") fails on the old code (-14 instead of 36).

- "File matching unsettled threads now" classifies all eligible threads in
  batches of 100 instead of stopping after the first 100.
- The title call only offers folders whose other rule conditions match.
- Dragging a loose settled thread keeps the space of settled folder cards.

"Collect existing threads now" asks the model before it takes the write
lock. A rename or rule change during that call now fails the action
instead of filing threads picked for the old folder.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Customize now only sets the folder's name, icon and color. A folder
collects new threads from its menu: Off, By topic, By branch, or By
worktree, where branch and worktree list recent values to pick. The
shared helpers live in client-runtime so mobile uses the same choices.

Mobile offers the same Off, By topic, By branch, and By worktree choices

The stale check ran only when the folder's current rule was smart, so a
switch to a branch or worktree rule during the model call filed threads
under the new rule. It now runs whenever the sort used the model.

Correct, and web has the same limit: Un-settle folder acts on the members the client has loaded. Older settled threads come in pages (omitOlderSettled), so members past the loaded frontier stay settled. Nothing is lost: they stay in the folder and in search.

I'm leaving this for a follow-up and not patching it here. The only way a client can reach unloaded ids is to send thread.unsettle to every folder member. That has two problems:

  • folder.threadIds keeps archived members, and the orchestrator rejects thread.unsettle for an archived thread.
  • thread.unsettle with reason: "user" pins an active thread active.

A correct fix is a server-side folder operation that settles or un-settles members from the full projection. That is a separate change from this PR.

Not a bug: in V2 an auto-settled thread always has settledOverride: "settled".

  • ThreadSettlementService dispatches thread.auto-settle, which the orchestrator turns into a plain thread.settle (Orchestrator.ts, the "thread.auto-settle" case). That case writes settledOverride: "settled" together with settledAt. thread.unsettle clears settledAt.
  • So settledAt !== null with settledOverride === null does not occur for a settled thread. Web (Sidebar.logic.ts) and mobile (threadListV2.ts) also decide "settled" from settledOverride === "settled" only. If such a row did exist, it would show as active, and filing it would match what the user sees.

Every folder menu now has "Add related threads". A folder with a rule

Fixed in d437470. mutate takes { inferRules: false }, and the MCP writesThreads path (move and rule-free create, which linked callers can reach) passes it, so those writes never adopt a name-implied rule. Writes that may set a rule still go through McpToolAccess.writes, which refuses linked callers. The service test asserts a rename with inferRules: false leaves the rule null.

…d pick an icon from the name

A folder infers a branch or worktree rule only when all of its threads
share it, never over an explicit autoFile:false, and never for linked
MCP callers, whose writes must not reach threads they did not name.

New folders get a Lucide icon and color matched to their name, and the

Not a bug: no onLongPress is involved on either platform.

  • Menu (apps/mobile/src/components/ui/Menu.tsx:52-77) clones the child with only onTouchStart and onPress, and ThreadListV2Section forwards both to its Pressable.
  • On Android, @react-native-menu/menu's MenuView.kt returns true from onInterceptTouchEvent and opens the menu from its own GestureDetector.onLongPress when shouldOpenOnLongPress is set. The JS child never sees or needs a long-press handler.
  • Thread rows on main use the same <Menu shouldOpenOnLongPress> wrapping a Pressable and open on Android the same way.

the prior-approval rule requires approval for the direction and scope of new product behavior. #12182 establishes the manual folder design, and its closing comment invites a V2 replacement. this PR additionally infers collection rules from folder names, classifies threads by topic through title generation, moves rule-filed threads, and bulk-files related threads. those automated filing workflows are absent from the original manual-folder scope. please obtain and link explicit approval for that expansion, or narrow the replacement to the previously established folder workflow. the sidebar organization problem remains valid.
