New worktrees always start from the repository's default branch. Projects whose day-to-day work branches from somewhere else, such as dev, have to pick that base by hand on every new worktree thread, and it is easy to forget. This adds one setting for that base.

Settings → Worktrees → Base branch takes a branch, tag, or commit. It follows the existing environment and project inheritance, so you can set it for a single project, and an empty project override goes back to the repository default. Left empty, behavior is the same as main.

  • Web and desktop: the branch picker's automatic worktree base uses the configured value wherever it used the repository default. It waits for server settings to load so the default can't claim the draft first. A configured value is used as typed, so it works even when it isn't in the loaded ref page or only exists on the remote. With Start from remote on, dev resolves to origin/dev the same way the default branch does.
  • Switching modes: in Current checkout, the branch picker checks a branch out; it doesn't choose a worktree base. So when a base is configured, switching a draft to New worktree starts from that base, whichever branch is checked out, and the picker shows it before you send. Choosing New worktree again keeps a base you already picked in worktree mode. With no base configured, the switch behaves as before.
  • Mobile: new-task drafts and the pending-drafts list fill the worktree base from the same setting, and the Worktrees settings page has the same input.
  • Not changed: worktrees agents create through the worktree MCP tool still default to the project's current branch when no base is passed. Scheduled tasks keep their own base branch picker.

Discussion: #6866, where a smaller version of this was proposed after #13598 was closed. This replaces #13592 and #16451 with a narrower scope: no "last used" memory and no separate global scope.

Before / after

Before After
Worktrees settings before Worktrees settings after, project override set to dev
New worktree draft defaults to main New worktree draft defaults to the configured dev

Captured in an isolated dev instance (--home-dir in a scratch folder, --no-seed). The "after" project has the base set to dev as a project override. In both rows the draft was switched from Current checkout to New worktree.

Verification

  • vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (32 packages), and tests beside the changes all pass.
  • New focused tests cover: the web base candidate (configured, default, non-Git), the mode-switch rule on web and mobile (including keeping a base picked in worktree mode), mobile worktree fill with a configured base that is not in the ref list, pending-draft branch display, and a project override of "" beating an environment value.
  • Manual check on web as described above. I did not send a message, so worktree creation from dev on the server was not exercised; it uses the existing base-ref path.
  • Not checked: mobile in a simulator. The mobile changes are covered by the unit tests above only.

Projects whose work branches from something other than the repository
default, such as dev, had to pick that base by hand on every new worktree
thread. Settings -> Worktrees -> Base branch sets it per environment or per
project; empty keeps the repository default. Web and mobile drafts use it
wherever they used the default branch. Switching a draft from the current
checkout to a new worktree drops the branch synced from the checkout so the
configured base applies; a branch the user picked still wins.

Switching to New worktree loses a manually selected branch when it matches the current checkout, so the task starts from the configured base (for example, dev) instead of the selected branch (release). The Current checkout picker checks out the chosen branch before selectBranch persists it, making selectedBranchName equal localSelection.branch; resolveWorktreeSwitchBranch mistakes that equality for an automatic selection and clears it. Preserve explicit draft selections and clear only selections that follow the checkout.

resolveWorktreeSwitchBranch treats branch-name equality as proof that the selection was automatic, so it also discards explicit user choices. In mobile's Current checkout picker, NewTaskContextPickerScreens.selectBranch checks out the chosen branch and then calls flow.selectBranch; consequently a manually picked release becomes both selectedBranch and checkoutBranch. With base dev configured, switching to New worktree now returns null here and fillNewTaskWorkspaceBranch replaces the user's release with dev, creating the task from the wrong base. Track whether the selection follows the checkout instead of inferring it from equal names.

Right, comparing branch names can't tell a checked-out pick from the synced checkout branch. Fixed in 097cde0 by dropping the guess: in Current checkout the picker checks a branch out rather than choosing a worktree base, so with a base configured, switching to New worktree now always starts from that base, and the picker shows it before sending. The user can still pick release there. With no base configured, the switch behaves as before.

After selecting a machine in Current checkout and switching to New worktree, the synced checkout branch is retained instead of the configured base branch. environmentSelection === "manual" also represents machine selection, so this guard treats an automatically synced branch as user-picked; track branch-selection provenance separately before preserving it.

Right, environmentSelection also records machine picks, so it isn't a branch-provenance signal. Fixed in 097cde0: the helper no longer reads it. With a base configured, leaving Current checkout for New worktree always starts from the base. It only fires when the draft's current mode is local, so choosing New worktree again keeps a base already picked in worktree mode.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This adds a cross-platform configurable base branch that changes how new worktree drafts are resolved and introduces a line-level lint suppression. Unresolved High-severity findings also concern branch provenance during workspace switching, so the behavior warrants human review.

Walkthrough

This change adds a project-scoped base-branch setting for new worktrees. Mobile and web settings controls expose the setting. Mobile draft resolution, the web branch toolbar, and the web composer use it when choosing or resetting worktree branches.

The server settings contract adds newWorktreesBaseBranch with an empty-string default. Mobile and web controls expose the project value. The settings search, project-settings test, and documentation cover the setting.

Mobile draft resolution uses the configured base for a new worktree when no branch is selected. When switching from local mode to worktree mode, branch selection uses the configured base-branch rules.
Web toolbar base selection
apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbar.logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/BranchToolbarBranchSelector.tsx
The toolbar waits for settings and the initial branch load, then selects the configured base in a repository. Otherwise, it falls back to the repository default branch or current Git branch.
Web draft branch synchronization
apps/web/src/lib/chatThreadActions.ts, apps/web/src/lib/chatThreadActions.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/useComposerSelection.ts
When a local draft switches to worktree mode with a configured base branch, the composer clears the draft branch.

Leaving Current checkout for New worktree guessed whether the draft's branch
was synced or picked: web read environmentSelection, which machine picks also
set, and mobile compared branch names, which a checked-out pick also matches.
In Current checkout the picker checks a branch out rather than choosing a
worktree base, so with a base configured the switch now always starts from
it, shown in the picker before sending. Re-selecting New worktree keeps a
base already picked there.
