fix(server): nightly starts on databases a preview build migrated - #25494
Nightly desktop builds crash-loop at startup ("Backend exited unexpectedly; restart scheduled") on databases that a v0.1.2 preview build (20261022.3511 or .3516) once opened. Those previews recorded peer links as migrations 68 PeerLinks, 69 PeerLinkFence and 70 WaitingLinkRequestIndex. Main later used 68 and 69 for ShellStopRequestIndex and ThreadMessageSearch, so assertV2MigrationsCanRun refuses the database. All release channels share ~/.t3, so running a preview once is enough to break nightly.
Before the V2 history check, the migrator now looks for exactly that preview tail (68 to 70 with those names and nothing after). When peer_environment_links has no rows, it drops the preview's table and waiting-link index and deletes the 68 to 70 history rows in one transaction. Main's 68 and 69 then run normally. This is the manual fix the reporter confirmed in the issue, and it sits next to the existing 53/54 preview reconcile.
If the table has stored links, the migrator stops with an error that explains the cause and how to fix it: start the preview build, unlink every environment, then start again. It doesn't delete the links because main has no code to read them, and each row points to a session token in the secret store that would be orphaned without a trace. Renumbering the rows to 70 to 72 would keep the data, but it would claim ids main hasn't assigned yet and could collide with whatever lands there.
Peer links landing later doesn't conflict with this. t3code/peer/links (base of #22447) adds 070_PeerLinks with CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS, and the v0.1.3 preview records the same 3 migrations as 70 to 72 after main's 68/69. Main's checks already accept that history. Dropping the preview table also keeps a future ALTER TABLE ... ADD COLUMN fenced from failing on a column that already exists. #25058 handles the same history in the dev seed importer. That script calls runMigrations, so this fix covers it too.
Scope and approval
Fixes the triaged bug in #25175. The reporter identified the migration history and confirmed the manual SQL version of this fix.
Verification
vp test run apps/server/src/persistence/reconcileV2PreviewMigration.test.ts apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations.test.ts: 14 tests pass. New tests seed an in-memory database through 67, apply the preview's 68 to 70 SQL, then check that:
with no stored links, main's 68/69 run and the history matches the manifest.
with a stored link, migration fails and leaves the history and the row unchanged.
The no-links test fails without the fix.
Server typecheck and lint on the touched files pass.
Not checked: a real nightly AppImage against a preview-migrated database. Main doesn't know the preview's link_request turn items, so a database where peer linking was actually used may hit other decode issues after it starts. This PR doesn't cover that.

v0.1.2 previews recorded peer links as migrations 68-70, the ids main
later used for ShellStopRequestIndex and ThreadMessageSearch, so newer
builds refused those databases at startup. Forget that preview history
when no peer links are stored so main's migrations run.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped migration compatibility fix for databases created by a specific preview build. It preserves databases containing links, cleans up only empty legacy schema state transactionally, and includes focused tests for both outcomes.

Walkthrough
Server startup now reconciles a specific peer-links preview migration history before checking whether V2 migrations can run. It removes the preview schema and migration records only when no peer links are stored. Regression tests cover cleanup and the stored-link failure case.

Summary
Reconcile preview history during startup apps/server/src/persistence/reconcileV2PreviewMigration.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/Migrations.ts, apps/server/src/persistence/reconcileV2PreviewMigration.test.ts
The reconciliation checks whether migration history from ID 68 matches the specified peer-links entries. If stored links exist, it raises a migration error without changing the history or link rows. If none exist, it removes the preview table, index, and migration records. Startup calls the reconciliation before the V2 migration check. Tests cover both cases.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#25175] requires nightly startup to stop the backend crash loop and open the desktop window. runMigrations now calls reconcilePeerLinksPreviewMigrations before assertV2MigrationsCanRun. The reconciler detects the exact preview history, removes the empty preview schema and history in one transaction, and allows main migrations 68 and 69 to run. Tests cover the empty-link startup path, repeat execution, and the unchanged failure path for stored links. The stored-link limitation is explicit and does not establish an unmet requirement in #25175.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed production code only adds reconciliation for the preview migration history that causes the #25175 startup failure. The tests cover successful cleanup, manifest-aligned history, idempotence, and preservation of stored links on failure. The changes have a direct connection to the linked issue and contain no demonstrated unrelated behavior.

Assert the stored-links error, not only that the migration fails.
Exit.isFailure accepts any failure. If reconcilePeerLinksPreviewMigrations() were not called, assertV2MigrationsCanRun would still reject this history. Migrations 68 and 69 are recorded as PeerLinks and PeerLinkFence, which do not match the manifest names. That check fails before any write, so the history and peer_environment_links stay unchanged and the existing assertions still pass. The test does not show that the stored-links guard raised the error. Assert the error type and its message.
