fix(server): reject waits on foreground subagent background work - #25036
A foreground native Claude agent can start a background command, mark it with t3_background_wait, and return promising to resume. Claude kills that command when the foreground agent returns, but T3 had accepted its ID as awaited. Reproduced on current main with Claude Code 2.1.303 in the real web app.
Change
Use the adapter's existing background-owner tracking to return foreground-owned work as unmatched when marking a wait. Root-owned work and work owned by a background native agent remain eligible, and clearing a wait is unchanged. Explain in Claude's injected instructions that foreground native agents must finish work before returning and use delegate_task for long work.
Triaged bug via the automated issue flow. Limited to false wait acceptance for foreground-owned work; the separate background-agent resume reports are out of scope.
Verification
Red first: one regression failed on main because foreground-owned-shell incorrectly appeared in matched. Red test output.
The regression also verifies emitted awaited flags and preserves root/background-owner positive controls.
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, GraphQL generation, affected typechecks, and all 236 adapter tests passed.
Merged main with a merge commit and reran vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts: 236 passed. Post-merge test output.
Real app runtime proof, Linux x64 / Claude 2.1.303 / claude-opus-5-5: before, a foreground-owned command was matched and killed just before its owner completed; after, its wait was unmatched and its completion notification arrived before its owner returned. Reproduction prompts and environment.
The later commit only tightens instruction wording; the main merge does not alter the adapter. Server-only change; no rendered paths or visual fixture matrix. Independent proof audit found the evidence sufficient. macOS was not rerun; the affected adapter path is shared across host platforms.
Models: GPT-6.1-Sol and Claude Opus 5.5. Harnesses: Codex and Claude Agent SDK in T3 Code.
…nd work
t3_background_wait accepted background commands and Monitors owned by a
foreground native subagent. Claude Code kills that work when the subagent
returns, so the thread was held for a wake that never came. The adapter now
only marks root work and work owned by a backgrounded subagent, and the
injected instructions tell the agent to finish foreground work in-turn or move
long work to a background subagent or delegate_task.
Fixes#24956
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused server-side bug fix that prevents foreground-subagent-owned background work from being marked as awaitable, while preserving root and background-subagent behavior. The change includes a targeted regression test and does not introduce schema, configuration, or sensitive-area changes.
You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.
The adapter now excludes foreground-subagent-owned tasks from awaited background-task matches. Its instructions explain that foreground subagents must finish background work before returning. A regression test covers root-owned and background-subagent-owned tasks alongside foreground-subagent-owned tasks.
awaitBackgroundTasks excludes tasks with a foreground parent when awaited is true. The instructions describe foreground-subagent background work. The test checks that root-owned and background-subagent-owned tasks are matched, while foreground-subagent-owned tasks are not.

Foreground subagent work may still be accepted as awaited with the locked SDK, so the intended fix should be made compatible with the supported SDK before merging.

The description includes all required sections. It explains the problem, the implementation, scope and issue approval, focused regression and runtime verification, test results, platform limits, and the models and harnesses used.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #24956 requires foreground-subagent-owned waits to be rejected and requires guidance that foreground agents finish their work before returning. The adapter now excludes tasks with a foreground parent when awaited is true. It still accepts root-owned tasks and tasks whose parent is a background subagent. The awaited: false path remains unchanged. The injected Claude instructions describe this behavior and direct long work to delegate_task. The added regression test checks matched IDs and awaited flags for all three ownership cases. The PR reports that all 236 adapter tests passed.

Explanation
The diff contains only the Claude adapter behavior, its injected instructions, and a regression test for issue #24956. These changes support the stated fix. The separate background-agent resume reports and unrelated UI work are not changed, consistent with the declared scope.

Require ownership data before accepting an awaited task.
The lockfile resolves the Claude SDK to 0.3.276, but parent_task_id was added in 0.3.292. With the resolved SDK, a foreground-owned task can omit parentTaskId. This condition then treats it as root-owned and can accept the false wait this change is intended to reject. Raise the supported minimum or reject awaited tasks when ownership data is unavailable.

Problem
A foreground native Claude agent can start a background command, mark it with
