refactor(web): preview, browser and device panels drop sync effects - #24818
Effects that copy state from one place to another (props into state, one store into another, flags that a later effect acts on) cause double fires, lost events, stale values and extra renders before paint. The maintainers asked for them to be removed across the web and mobile clients and replaced with the right construct: derive during render, do the work in the handler, read stores at use time, attach element work to ref callbacks, and use keyed atoms, stores or explicit state machines.
The preview, browser host and device panels attach DOM listeners from
ref callbacks and read polled data from atoms, the right panel store
owns diff opening, maximizing and collapse, and VCS status refresh
moves into one shared atom per checkout.
Effect categories removed:
surface, canvas, tab list, webview and 3D viewer listeners and
observers moved to ref callbacks
polling and fetches moved to atoms (stream access retry, device stream
session, accessibility overlay, fold reads, hub probe, device details)
fade timers moved to deadlines
history titles and favicons recorded where navigation status arrives
instead of copied by effects
right panel consume effects (diff open, maximize, focus before inert)
replaced by store actions
width-transition and scroll-reset layout effects replaced by state
derived in render and resize observer callbacks
per-control focus/visibility status refresh replaced by a shared VCS
revalidation atom
Bugs fixed:
Resizing a browser viewport failed with "No visible browser viewport
handler" when its tab was not mounted.
A screenshot started before hiding the device panel was dropped.
The device panel and setup probed hosts twice when both were open.
A device action's answer was discarded if the panel was hidden.
Popping out a device tab whose session had ended opened a dead player.
Returning to a tab showed a picker that was no longer running.
Hosted webview content was placed one frame after layout.
Kept effects:
Browser surface, webview and stream connection syncs: external systems
whose lifetime is the view.
Hosted webview tab lease and colour/zoom sync: external Electron tab.
Device 3D viewport prop pushes: external three.js viewer.
Desktop preview IPC subscription and picker grant push.
Temporary compat shims (removed in a later layer of this stack):
rightPanelStore.ts: final store plus the base requestMaximize/consumeMaximizeRequest/reconcileFileSurfaces that the base ChatView calls until the web-chat-view layer; moving the panel files up instead would have pulled most of the panels layer into web-chat-view (removed in layer 12)
browserFaviconStore.ts: no-op registerFaviconProjectForThread export for the base ChatView until the web-chat-view layer (the final store derives the project itself) (removed in layer 12)
browserHistoryStore.ts: starts preview title recording at module load until appInit starts it in the app-bootstrap layer (the final PreviewView no longer records titles) (removed in layer 10)
Review follow-up
Files moved between layers so each layer's behavior is complete on its own:
apps/web/src/components/preview/ThreadPreviewMiniPlayer.tsx: moved up to layer 12
Temporary for this layer: the root knip.jsonc gets ignoreIssues entries for exports that only gain consumers in a later layer. The list shrinks as you go up the stack, and it's gone from layer 12 on.
The preview and device panel tests also carry two mock entries that their layer-11 and layer-12 versions replace.
Stack progress
Effect hooks (useEffect, useLayoutEffect, useInsertionEffect) in non-test code under apps/web/src and apps/mobile, counted at each layer's head. The base is main at a96cf08 with 1,002 hooks. Zero isn't the goal. After the external review, explicit effects came back wherever they are the clearer model: measurement driven by changing inputs, cleanup tied to a component's lifetime, and subscriptions owned by one view. Hidden marker elements, ref-identity tricks and remount keys are gone.
Requested by maintainers (Julius). Across the stack, effect hooks in non-test client code go from 981 to 138; the remaining ones sync with outside systems (third-party editors and terminals, native views, layout measurement before paint) and each has a one-line reason in the code. Each layer typechecks and passes its tests on its own; temporary compat shims are listed above and come out in the layer that owns the file.
Verification
vp run check:changed on the top of the stack: format, lint, knip, typecheck and tests all pass.
This layer: vp run typecheck, vp lint on its files and the tests next to them.
Every slice behind this layer went through an independent adversarial review for disguised effects and behavior regressions before integration.
Not yet exercised in a real client. Flows worth a manual pass: timeline follow and citations, composer overlay and resting state, the details card popover (web); feed follow and jump, thread detail animations, share import, new-task routing and diff highlighting on collapse (mobile).

Closing either view sets the shared device screen to null, so the remaining view's mini player falls back to portrait dimensions even while its stream is live. Because onScreen fires only when frame dimensions change, subsequent frames do not restore the correct aspect ratio; track active session owners and clear the screen only when the last one closes.

When two sessions have the same URL, recordPreviewTitles writes both titles in insertion order, so a stale title from a later-inserted session overwrites the refreshed title. When a thread is registered after multiple pages have settled, earlier visits remain untitled: readThreadPreviewState exposes only the latest session snapshot per tab, so recordPreviewTitles can replay page B's title but not page A's after pendingVisitsByThreadKey is drained. When control changes during the resize debounce, the stream can remain at its old resolution until the canvas changes size again. Replacing attachCanvas runs its cleanup, which cancels capTimer; the new observer then sees the dimensions already stored in sizeRef and returns without scheduling growCap. Preserve or reschedule pending cap growth across ref reattachment, or keep the sizing observer independent of control-dependent handlers.

For an unsubmitted draft, both this selector and readThreadProjectRef return no project because they look up draftThreadsByThreadKey with scopedThreadKey(threadRef), while drafts are stored by draftId and resolved from refs by matching environmentId and threadId. Draft previews therefore lose their project favicon, and captured favicons remain pending instead of entering the project cache. Resolve the draft from its thread ref in both paths, using getDraftSessionByRef or its equivalent.

Opening either floating preview renders nothing: canvas.previewKey stays null, so frame is always null and the conditional branch omits the player. Removing reportPreview leaves no code populating the canvas preview, and useThreadPreviewCanvasSource has no callers; connect that source to the canvas before removing this reporting path.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a large cross-cutting refactor that changes browser, device, preview, history, and VCS runtime lifecycles rather than only removing incidental effects. It also adds a static-analysis suppression and has unresolved functional concerns around preview rendering, shared device state, and history/favicon propagation.

Walkthrough
The pull request changes browser surface and panel lifecycles, updates preview viewport and metadata handling, and moves device state and streaming into shared atoms and sessions. It also adds VCS status revalidation and updates related tests.
Browser surface leases and hosted webview layout observation attach to element refs. Webview content position updates on resize and scroll, and recovery state is keyed by generation. A browser-host test checks content dimensions at two viewport sizes.
Viewport commits use thread, server-tab, and runtime-tab identifiers and queue by runtime tab. Server canvas attachment owns size measurement and cleanup; access retries depend on visibility and denial state.
Favicon and history metadata apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.ts, apps/web/src/browserFaviconStore.test.ts, apps/web/src/browserHistoryStore.ts, apps/web/src/browserHistoryStore.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/usePreviewBridge.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/openTerminalLinkInPreview.test.ts
Favicon recording reads project and connection data from thread state and can display a pending capture. Browser history applies settled preview-session titles to matching existing visits.
Preview interactions and indicators apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewView.tsx, apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewView.browser.test.tsx, apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewChromeRow.tsx, apps/web/src/components/preview/AgentBrowserCursor.tsx, apps/web/src/components/preview/ZoomIndicator.tsx
Element-pick state is keyed by runtime tab and request. URL focus uses a caller-provided ref. Cursor and zoom visibility use deadlines.
Right-panel sizing and collapse apps/web/src/hooks/usePreviewPanelInlineSize.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/PreviewPanelShell.tsx, apps/web/src/components/preview/collapseRightPanel.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatRightPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/rightPanelStore.ts, knip.jsonc
The panel observes its row through a callback ref and handles collapsed state and focus return. The store adds diff selection, file-surface reconciliation, and focus-aware collapse.

Device atoms provide foreground, event-log, accessibility, fold, detail, host-probe, and EAS account state. Device setup and host settings read from these atoms.
A keyed session owns stream resources and state. The stream view and phone and Duo viewers use session resources, while shared mounting manages viewer setup, resize, input, and teardown.
Controls and event-log rendering read shared atoms. Fold commands update shared fold state. Screenshot captures prevent overlap and revoke download URLs after 60 seconds. Tests cover event-log buffering and device-control atom lifecycle.

Look up drafts by thread reference, not by draft ID key.
draftThreadsByThreadKey stores drafts under draftId, but both new fallbacks index it with scopedThreadKey(threadRef). When a draft has no thread shell, its project remains unresolved. Its favicon stays pending and is not persisted. Select the draft by its environment and thread IDs, as getDraftSessionByRef does, in both paths. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Guard focus restoration to real unmounts.
The React Compiler memoizes these callbacks, but changes to enabled or container can still change their identities. A ref re-attachment can then run cleanup while the host remains connected. Check host.isConnected before restoring focus.

Problem
Effects that copy state from one place to another (props into state, one store into another, flags that a later effect acts on) cause double fires, lost events, stale values and extra renders before paint. The maintainers asked for them to be removed across the web and mobile clients and replaced with the right construct: derive during render, do the work in the handler, read stores at use time, attach element work to ref callbacks, and use keyed atoms, stores or explicit state machines.
