fix(server): preserve agent origin in cross-thread provider messages - #24725
Cross-thread messages retain createdBy and senderThreadId in storage, but new turns and steers send only the body to the receiving model. A child's request can therefore look like a message from the human user. Fixes#24711.
Prefix provider-visible cross-thread agent text with its sender thread ID and an explicit agent-authored/not-human marker. Apply the same formatter at the provider prompt boundary and on steers, after composer-context projection. Native /compact dispatch uses the original text; handoff delivery preserves the marked prompt. Keep human messages and internal agent messages without a sender unchanged, and do not rewrite stored text, attachments, or provenance metadata. Sender IDs are JSON-escaped rather than interpolated as raw multiline text.
This is a fresh, independently written implementation of the replacement requested in #24711; it does not reuse code from #24483. It is a narrow repair to the existing message-delivery path, shared by providers and clients, with no wire schema or visual UI change.
Validation on macOS arm64 / Node 26.12.1:
Before the fix, three regressions failed: turn start plus steer with SQLite and in-memory projections delivered only the raw body; 36 controls passed.
Final vp run check:changed passed: 81 tests in four files, format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL checks and two affected-package typechecks. A separate targeted run of execution/control tests and the MCP delegated-task replay passed all 50 tests.
Real run execution with a fake provider boundary covers human, cross-thread agent, and sender-less internal agent input across native /compact, /compact with attachments, and ordinary prompts. Native command text and attachments are preserved; only cross-thread agent prompts gain the marker.
Fixed the review finding that early prefixing intercepted /compact. Updated the exact outbound Codex replay frames (not a permissive matcher); both MCP delegated-task replay scenarios now pass.
Real control service with both projection implementations delivered the marker on steer while the stored message remained exactly Use the smaller fix. Existing wrong-session and interrupt checks still passed.
Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Cross-thread agent messages now carry explicit attribution in provider prompts and steering, including inline handoffs. The change is narrowly scoped to message presentation, preserving human messages and special command handling.

Walkthrough
Provider-bound turn-start and steering text now identifies agent-authored messages when they include a sender thread. Goal commands retain their original text. Tests and a transcript fixture cover provenance, routing, and handoff behavior.
Adds a formatter for agent-authored messages with a sender thread and applies it to turn-start messages. Goal commands retain their original text. Tests cover routing, message origins, attachments, and transcript text.
Applies the formatter to provider-projected steering text. Tests cover sender attribution, agent-message labels in text handoffs, and unchanged stored target message text.
Agent messages retain their provenance without disrupting goal commands or composer context. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Explanation
The title "fix(server): preserve agent origin in cross-thread provider messages" matches the main change. The PR prefixes provider-visible cross-thread agent messages with the sender thread ID and an agent-authored, not-human marker, so the provider does not mistake them for user input. The title is a conventional commit, short, and specific to the server change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description covers the problem (cross-thread messages retain createdBy and senderThreadId in storage, but providers receive only the body, so they can look like user messages) and the change (prefixing provider-visible cross-thread agent text at the prompt boundary and on steers, with human and sender-less messages unchanged). It also reports validation on macOS with specific test counts and what was not checked, such as no paid provider or real client launch. It links issue #24711 and states scope. The template's Scope and approval section is only partly addressed: it cites the linked issue but does not explicitly include a maintainer approval comment, and the description does not say whether the issue was triaged or approved. The description also has a verbose 'Validation' section that mixes results from a later revision, while the PR comments describe a later change to native /goal handling that the description does not mention. These gaps are minor, so the description is mostly complete.

Explanation
[#24711] requires provider-bound cross-thread agent text to name the sender and to state that the message is agent-authored, not from the human user. withProviderMessageOrigin in providerMessageOrigin.ts adds both facts for createdBy "agent" messages with a senderThreadId. It writes the sender ID with JSON.stringify, so multiline IDs are escaped. The steer path in ProviderTurnControlService.ts wraps the composer-projected text with this formatter, which matches the PR description. RunExecutionService.ts applies the formatter before startTurn for turn starts. Stored text, attachments, and provenance metadata are not changed. Human and sender-less messages pass through unchanged. Tests cover turn start, steer, projections, attachments, and sender-less messages. Residual gap: Codex and Claude /goal command text from another thread is passed unchanged to keep adapter parsing working. The PR documents this exception. It is a narrow path that leaves such commands without the marker.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The source changes implement the provider-bound marker. They apply it in the turn-start path (RunExecutionService.ts, ProviderTurnStartService.ts) and the steer path (ProviderTurnControlService.ts). The goal-command and /compact exceptions in RunExecutionService.ts keep native command text intact, as the PR description and comment state. The test and fixture changes (ProjectionControlReads.test.ts, RunExecutionService.test.ts, ProviderSwitch.integration.test.ts, and the delegated_task_status codex_transcript.ndjson replay) verify the marker and the exceptions. They do not add unrelated schema, UI, permission, or skill-mention behavior.

Updated in 972d23a by merging main b424c6e while preserving commit history. The merge keeps main's deferred history for native /goal commands and the Agent message heading for ordinary cross-thread handoffs.
The new main path exposed a compatibility issue: adding the provenance prefix to a native goal command prevents the adapter from parsing it. The regression first failed on the provider-visible /goal text. Codex/Claude goal commands now retain their original command text; attachment-bearing goal text remains an ordinary prompt with provenance. Existing /compact dispatch is unchanged.
Validation: execution, provider-switch and steering integration suites passed 105 tests. check:changed then passed format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL consistency, affected-package typechecks and 124 adjacent tests. The protocol fixture uses production services with controlled provider runtimes; no real provider request was sent.
thanks nateEc for tracing the lost provenance to the provider boundary and covering start, steer, handoff, and exact codex replay frames. i kept your commits and implementation, merged main e123ac644eef, and reduced formatting churn in the routing test.
i added a narrow pi compaction exception, including instructions and steering. goal-command dispatch remains in the start path. paths and custom slash text retain provenance, including opencode /review; exempting prompt-expansion commands would leave some agent messages unattributed. this keeps the original fix's intent.
verification on 187051d663:
main's production code failed the three start/steer/handoff regressions; 96 adjacent tests passed.
pi command delivery, path-leading prose, and codex steering /goal each have fail-before regressions in existing test files.
blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, both knip checks, graphql consistency, three affected-package typechecks, and 138 tests across six files.
both mcp codex replay integration tests passed, including exact outbound provenance frames.
observed service/replay boundary:
stored message: Use the smaller fix.
provider steer:
[Message from another thread's agent (thread "thread:sender"). This is agent-authored coordination, not a message from the human user.]
Use the smaller fix.
pi command: /compact keep the tests
unverified: live model behavior and a real client session. no visual ui changes. custom slash prompt expansion for agent-authored messages remains outside this fix.

main reproduced missing provenance for cross-thread turn start and active-turn steer: codex received the bare probe and answered NO_ORIGIN_PREFIX.
pr start, explicit steer (delivery: steered), and queue to an idle receiver (delivery: started) delivered the sender thread id plus the agent-authored/not-human marker. the receiver quoted the exact marker. inspected native codex session input as well as the rendered client response.
read-only sqlite inspection confirmed original stored text, createdBy: agent, sender id, and empty attachments were preserved.
direct human composer input remained unchanged and returned HUMAN_CONTROL_OK. native /compact rendered Context compacted; the next human turn returned AFTER_COMPACT_OK.
