A branch tracking a same-named upstream branch was always pushed to that upstream, ignoring branch.<name>.pushRemote and remote.pushDefault. In a fork checkout this wrote to the source repository instead of the fork. Push to the configured remote and keep the fetch upstream, as git push does. Resolve and push to configured remotes apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts, apps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriver.ts |
The push logic separates configured push remotes from the primary-remote fallback. For a distinct configured remote, it checks whether that remote contains HEAD and skips or pushes accordingly. Pushes preserve the tracking upstream. Tests cover configured remotes and branch states. |
Resolve the pull-request head from the pushed ref apps/server/src/git/GitManager.ts, apps/server/src/git/GitManager.test.ts |
GitPushResult can include the push remote. The stacked-action flow passes the push remote and upstream branch to runPrStep, which uses that ref to resolve the pull-request head. Tests cover fork heads and tracked-branch bases. |

Push now sends a branch tracking origin/topic to the configured push remote and keeps tracking origin. Push & create PR then resolved the PR head from that retained tracking ref, so it asked for `topic` on the source repository and not `<fork-owner>:topic`. runPrStep now takes the pushed ref and, when it differs from the tracked upstream, resolves the PR head from the push remote. Tracking, base resolution and other callers are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A branch that matched its tracked upstream was reported up to date even when its configured push remote was missing those commits, so Push left the fork behind and the PR head came from the tracked ref. The skip now checks the push remote's branch first and pushes when it lacks HEAD. The push result now names the push remote it used, and the PR step takes it from there instead of re-reading `git remote` after the push. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…date push The up-to-date skip trusted the local refs/remotes/<pushRemote>/<branch>, which stays stale after the fork branch is deleted or rewound elsewhere, so Push could report success without publishing. The push-remote path now fetches that branch and skips only when the fresh ref contains HEAD. The check moves into the push-remote path, which already knows whether the branch tracks its own name, so the alias test stays inline where it was. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The push-remote PR tests read the fake gh's argv to see which head and base the PR was created with. They now pass makeManager a small provider that records createChangeRequest, so they assert the base and head selector directly and keep working however the default fake forge records its calls. Tests in Not changed here: the client still disables Push with "No local commits to push." in that state, because its ahead count compares with the tracked branch. Fixing that needs the git status contract to carry the push destination's ahead count, which is a separate client change. The PR description lists it under Not checked. |

Problem
A common fork setup clones the source repository as
origin, adds a personal fork, and setsremote.pushDefault=fork(orbranch.<name>.pushRemote=fork). Plaingit pushthen sends the branch to the fork and keeps pulling fromorigin. The GitCafe mirror setup indocs/operations/development.mdworks the same way:originis git.cafe andremote.pushDefaultisgithub.T3 Code's Push ignores both settings once the branch tracks a same-named branch. A branch
topictrackingorigin/topicis pushed toorigin. The commits land in the source repository instead of the fork, and the panel says "Pushed to origin/topic". Without write access to the source, Push fails even though the fork is writable.pushCurrentBranchinapps/server/src/vcs/GitVcsDriverCore.tsalready reads these settings throughresolvePushRemoteNamefor unpublished branches and for branches tracking their base. The same-name path skips it and always pushes to the tracked remote.Change
resolveConfiguredPushRemoteNamereturnsbranch.<name>.pushRemote, thenremote.pushDefault, or null.resolvePushRemoteNamekeeps its old result: that value, else the primary remote.HEADto the tracked branch name on the configured remote. It does not pass-u, so the branch keeps trackingorigin/topicfor pulls, as plaingit pushdoes. The result namesfork/topic, so the panel shows where the commits went.HEAD; otherwise it pushes there. The refspec stays explicit, so
push.defaultcannot change the target branch. #788 used an explicit refspec for that reason.Scope and approval
There is no issue for this exact case. It qualifies as a small, focused fix of an obvious bug: #788 added support for
branch.<name>.pushRemoteandremote.pushDefault, and this path bypasses them. The up-to-date skip and the PR head follow the same push destination, so they are part of the same fix. No settings, defaults or UI code change.Verification
Real Git tests cover both push-remote settings, preserved tracking, a fork branch that is absent, behind, deleted or rewound, and the PR head and base Push & create PR sends. Both push-remote cases fail on main
