Summary

  • Preserve the existing thread title when the model returns the literal placeholder title.
  • Add regression coverage for thread-title normalization.
  • Keep this change scoped to the title-placeholder bug; branch-renaming failures are not addressed here.

Why

Issue #23726 reports that malformed-but-schema-valid model output can overwrite a useful thread title with the word title. Since the value passes the string schema and current sanitization, it is treated as a successful generation.

Testing

  • Added a focused test for thread-title normalization.
  • Tests have not been run locally; please verify with the provider-core test suite in CI.

Closes #23726 (title-placeholder portion only).

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 821bfc1

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused thread-title bug fix that preserves an existing sanitized title only when regeneration returns the placeholder "title". It leaves other title-generation paths unchanged and adds only a small test-file update.

Walkthrough

Thread title generation now keeps the sanitized previous title when the sanitized generated title is "title" and a previous title exists. Tests cover title sanitization and generation with several previous-title and generated-title values.

Changes: Thread title fallback

When the sanitized generated title is "title" and a previous title exists, generateThreadTitle returns the sanitized previous title. Tests cover trimming, placeholder fallback, empty or absent previous titles, and more specific generated titles.

Explanation

The title "fix: preserve thread title when model returns placeholder" matches the main change. The raw summary says fromRunner now keeps the previous title when the generated title is the placeholder "title", and regression tests were added for thread-title normalization. The title uses a conventional commit prefix and is specific. It is a single sentence of 8 words and avoids file lists and vague terms.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For [#23726], fromRunner sanitizes the generated title and preserves input.previousTitle when the normalized result equals title, ignoring case. The added generateThreadTitle tests cover title, quoted uppercase TITLE, missing or empty previous titles, and a normal generated title. This implements the title-placeholder portion of the issue. The issue's branch-renaming failure is explicitly outside this pull request.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to thread-title normalization in packages/provider-core/src/server/textGenerationOperations.ts and focused regression tests in textGenerationUtils.test.ts. No unrelated provider behavior or branch-name generation changes are present.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections. It has a Summary, a Why section that states the problem and cites issue #23726, and a Testing section. The Summary states the change and its scope. The Why section gives the problem, but it does not give reproduction steps or the expected behavior in full. The Scope and approval section is missing. The template asks for a linked triaged issue or maintainer approval, and the PR links issue #23726 but does not show maintainer approval of direction or scope. The Verification section is weak. It says one focused test was added but does not describe its observed results. It also states that tests have not been run locally. The template says "Tests pass" alone is insufficient, and this description gives no test results at all. The description does not state which model and harness did the work, though the template asks for that only when an agent was used.

Resolution

Add a "Scope and approval" section. Link issue #23726 and state whether a maintainer approved the direction for the title-placeholder fix. Expand the "Verification" section. Name the focused test file or test cases. State the command run, or state that the test was not run, and explain why. Report the observed result for the changed behavior. Note any checks that were not performed. Optionally add the reproduction steps from issue #23726 to the "Problem" section, and rename the "Why" section to "Problem" to match the template.

Add regression coverage for the generateThreadTitle fallback.

The current test calls only sanitizeThreadTitle. It cannot detect a regression in fromRunner().generateThreadTitle, where a generated "title" should preserve a non-empty input.previousTitle. Add a focused test that exercises this operation with that input and asserts the previous title is returned.

@devxMani, kept your fallback and commits, merged current main, and shortened the fallback to one conditional in the result. Changed toLocaleLowerCase() to toLowerCase() so the ASCII placeholder also matches in Turkish locales. Added generation-path coverage in the existing test file for literal/quoted uppercase placeholders, normalized previous titles, absent/empty previous titles, valid replacements, and the refinement flag. Both earlier review findings are addressed.

Verification: main d487078f11 failed the two preservation cases; the fix passes all nine focused tests. Blacksmith vp run check:changed passed format, lint, knip, affected typecheck (21 packages), and tests. GitHub CI passed lint, build/typecheck, package tests, web tests, all eight server shards, and the native fingerprint check; unaffected jobs were skipped. Required checks pass. Optional deployment/preview workflows remain unapproved. Two independent Sol reviews approved e210f01380 with no findings.

In system Chrome, the real web client sent Regenerate title through WebSocket, the title service, and the Codex CLI adapter using a controlled structured response. Main replaced Implement issue #140 with title; this head preserved it. A valid replacement succeeded and persisted after reload. The red conversation error in the captures comes from the fixture CLI not implementing agent turns; title generation uses its separate working exec path.

Unverified: account-backed provider calls (Codex is not logged in), packaged desktop, native mobile, and relay/tunnel connections. The fallback is shared by provider runners and requires no client or wire changes. Initial titles without a previous title and branch naming retain their existing behavior.

Before, on main:

main overwrites the useful title with the controlled placeholder

After, on this head:

the same placeholder preserves the useful title

main regeneration overwrites the title

fixed regeneration preserves the title

Verified in a real dev environment

Verified the unchanged head e210f013807aecd5329ee6926e2a18c7d9a9c068 on this Linux Boat VM with repo Playwright and /usr/bin/google-chrome. This pass used the real Codex CLI and gpt-6.1-sol through the local provider proxy, with no mocked provider, fixtures, or demo data.

Created a project pointing at a real git repository through Add project, created a thread, and completed a real Codex turn. In the app's settings, selected gpt-6.1-sol for text generation and set Thread title instructions to request the literal title. Renamed the thread to Implement issue #140, then clicked its menu's Regenerate title.

  • On github/main at 9910c0e87469a44a18ce5c381533fc0a06c81ef1, regeneration overwrote the useful title with title.
  • Stopped main before starting the exact PR head. Reused a copy of the app-created conversation and settings. The same action preserved Implement issue #140, including after reload.
  • Also requested quoted uppercase TITLE. Observed the real CLI's temporary structured output as {"title":"\"TITLE\"","needsRefinement":false} while the app kept the previous title.
  • A valid generated replacement, Investigate issue #140, updated the title and persisted after reload. A follow-up real Codex turn returned follow-up verified. and completed normally. Reset the temporary title instructions afterward.

Packaged desktop, native iOS/Android, macOS/Windows, relay/tunnel connections, and other providers were not exercised on this Linux web/Codex pass. The original branch-renaming issue is outside this PR's scope. The placeholder was deliberately requested through the shipped settings flow; this does not measure how often a provider returns it without that instruction.

the rendered PR reports 21 successful checks and 4 skipped checks. mergeability against today's newer main was not established by this verification.

No source changes, commits, or pushes were needed. No merge, close, rebase, force-push, or label changes were performed.
