fix(server): baseline existing pull request checks when watching - #23522
vkpdeveloper wants to merge 8 commits into
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained server bug fix that baselines existing pull-request checks and conflicts when a watch starts, while preserving notifications for later changes and comments. Unit and runtime tests cover the new baseline and restart behavior. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

- Line 41: Update the poll evaluation around baseline to track whether the watch
has previously observed a poll independently of watch.headSha, so a later
supplied SHA does not suppress reporting a newly failed check in changes. Add a
test that evaluates a pending check with an omitted SHA, then a failed check
with a supplied SHA, and verifies the failure is reported.

A first read without a head SHA left the watch looking fresh, so the next read that brought a SHA was treated as the baseline and swallowed new check failures. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When the baseline poll returns
detail.checks.length === 0, both notification guards are skipped. The returnednextstate then dropsawaitingBaseline. A later non-empty poll can therefore report a pre-existing failed or passed check as new. Line 45 already states that an empty list can represent a failed check read.Preserve
awaitingBaselineuntil a non-empty check snapshot is processed, and add a regression test for this sequence.Proposed fix

An empty check list can be a failed check read, so it no longer ends the check baseline. Conflicts still take theirs from the first read, so a pull request without checks keeps reporting new conflicts. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
A fresh
watch_pull_requestwakes the thread for checks that had already passed (or failed) before the watch started. A new watch starts with no head, and the evaluator treats the first head it sees as a change, so existing check results and merge conflicts are reported as news.Change
In
pullRequestWatch.ts, the first read that has a head SHA records the current checks and conflict state as the baseline without notifying. Later pushes, reruns and new failures still notify, and comments posted after the watch starts still wake the thread. Resumed watches keep comparing against their saved state.Scope and approval
Fixes #22184. The issue isn't triaged yet; this is a small, focused fix of the obvious bug it describes (about 10 lines in one function, plus tests).
Verification
pullRequestWatch.test.tsand a runtime test inruntimeLayer.test.tsfail without the fix and pass with the fix. The runtime test shows no notification on the first green read, on unchanged reads, or after a reactor restart, then one notification per later push.vp run check:changedpasses: 107 tests, format, lint, knip and typechecks.Code by gpt-6.1-sol (xhigh) in Codex CLI.
