Fixes #21889.

With the desktop backend running in WSL and Tailscale running separately on Windows and inside WSL, the pairing link pointed at the Windows Tailscale address. That address never reaches the backend, so pairing from another machine timed out until the user swapped in the WSL tailnet IP by hand.

When the running primary is the WSL backend, the desktop now asks the distro for its own IPv4 addresses (hostname -I, the probe it already uses) and for its own Tailscale IPs (tailscale ip -4), both cached for 60s. It then advertises only the addresses the backend actually has:

  • NAT networking (the default): the Windows LAN and Tailscale IPs are dropped, and the Tailscale IP the distro's own Tailscale reports is added. A 100.x address from another VPN is not mistaken for Tailscale. That is the address the reporter confirmed works.
  • Mirrored networking: the distro shares the Windows addresses, so nothing changes.
  • Unchanged in every mode: loopback, Tailscale HTTPS (Serve forwards to loopback and checks its own reachability) and custom endpoints.
  • If the probe fails, or WSL-only is set but the desktop fell back to the Windows backend, the Windows addresses are kept as before.

The distro's own NAT address (172.x) is never advertised, because other machines can't reach it.

Evidence

NAT, mirrored and probe failure: vp test run src/backend/DesktopServerExposure.test.ts runs getAdvertisedEndpoints end to end against a mocked wsl.exe and Tailscale CLI. It covers:

  • NAT: distro has 172.20.1.5 100.64.0.9. The Windows LAN and Tailscale IPs are dropped, http://100.64.0.9 is added, and the NAT address is not.
  • Mirrored: the distro shares the Windows addresses, so every endpoint is kept.
  • Probe failure: the Windows endpoints are kept.

Mirrored, on a real Windows 11 host (26200) running WSL2 with networkingMode=mirrored. The probe this PR uses sees the Windows addresses inside the distro, so mirrored setups keep the same endpoints they had before (addresses partly redacted):

Windows Ethernet: 192.168.88.x
Windows Tailscale: 100.115.x.x
wsl.exe -- sh -c "hostname -I"  ->  100.115.x.x 192.168.88.x fd7a:115c:a1e0::…   (IPv6 ignored)

Not checked: NAT mode on real hardware. Switching this host to NAT means restarting WSL, which is running a live T3 server. That case comes from the reporter's diagnosis (WSL listener 0.0.0.0:3773, Windows listener 127.0.0.1:3773, WSL tailnet IP reachable from another machine) plus the NAT test above.

Made with Claude Code (Sonnet 5.5 implementation, Opus 5.5 review) in T3 Code.

Walkthrough

When WSL is the primary backend, the desktop probes distro addresses to filter advertised Windows endpoints and add matching distro Tailscale endpoints. It caches probe results for 60 seconds and filters endpoint state when the endpoint host is not reachable from the distro.

Changes: WSL endpoint advertisement

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description is mostly complete. It explains the problem, implementation, affected networking modes, limitations, issue reference, focused tests, observed results, and untested scenarios. It uses an Evidence section instead of the template's Verification heading and does not explicitly document maintainer approval or an approval exemption, but the required technical context is present.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#21889]. DesktopBackendConfiguration pins the selected WSL primary, and DesktopServerExposure probes that distro for IPv4 and Tailscale IPv4 addresses. Endpoint selection removes unreachable Windows addresses, adds the distro Tailscale endpoint, excludes the distro NAT address, and retains loopback, Serve, and custom endpoints. Probe failure, empty probe output, and Windows-primary fallback preserve the existing Windows endpoints. DesktopServerExposure.test.ts covers NAT, mirrored networking, probe failure, empty output, fallback behavior, and pinned-distro probing.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#21889]. The WSL shell helper and address probes support endpoint selection. The cache, primary-backend state, Tailscale endpoint helper, test fixtures, and regression tests support the same behavior. No unrelated change is established.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

On CodeRabbit's nitpick about named spans for the WSL probes: done in e1dd67a. probeDistroIpv4Addresses and probeDistroTailscaleIpv4Addresses are now named Effect.fns, so each probe gets its own span.

thanks @ishaanko. your running-distro pinning and checking the distro's own tailscale address are retained, along with your commits.

i merged current main and simplified duplicated probe test setup. review fixes preserve explicit lan overrides, deduplicate full urls instead of hosts, and clear the rejected windows lan fallback from exposure state. empty address output now follows the existing probe-failure fallback.

verification at bc0bf53aae7fcbd8b7f954e328ae7784cd759042:

  • the nat regression fails against main's implementation with windows addresses instead of the distro address.
  • override, distinct-port, stale-fallback, and empty-probe cases failed before their fixes.
  • blacksmith vp run check:changed passes: formatting, lint, knip, both affected typechecks, and 77 tests across six existing files.
  • all 28 ci checks pass; cafe reports mergeable.

unverified: actual windows/wsl nat pairing from another tailnet device and before/after ui evidence. this linux vm has no windows/wsl runtime. @ishaanko, the original mirrored evidence remains useful; real nat pairing still needs confirmation. two independent review rounds identified three issues, now addressed; the final fallback/empty-probe correction was checked but not independently re-reviewed within the round limit. the automatic bot review is rate-limited. awaiting maria's approval.

wsl.exe runs the probe in a non-login shell, so /snap/bin is not on PATH and
Ubuntu's snap Tailscale was reported as absent. Under NAT networking the
distro's Tailscale address was then never advertised.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

@maria-rcks real NAT pairing, as asked. It turned up a bug, fixed in b1ec6ca.

Setup. Windows 11 26200, WSL 2.7.12, Ubuntu switched to networkingMode=nat (then back to mirrored). Tailscale runs on Windows (100.115.x.x) and, separately, inside the distro (Ubuntu's snap, 100.107.x.x). This branch's server listened inside the distro on 0.0.0.0:3874. On Windows, the desktop's real DesktopServerExposure was run under Node with the real wsl.exe, Tailscale CLI and network interfaces, once with main's DesktopServerExposure.ts and once with this branch's, which pins the WSL primary the way DesktopBackendConfiguration does. Then a MacBook on the same tailnet paired (POST /api/auth/browser-session with a fresh pairing credential) against every non-loopback http address each version advertised.

Run 1, branch at bc0bf53:

Advertised Pairing from the Mac
main LAN 192.168.88.x (default), Windows Tailscale 100.115.x.x, Tailscale HTTPS both timed out (8s)
this PR loopback, Tailscale HTTPS none: the distro's Tailscale address was missing

The PR dropped the unreachable Windows addresses but never added the distro's. probeDistroTailscaleIpv4Addresses runs tailscale ip -4 through wsl.exe -- sh -c, a non-login shell, and /snap/bin (where Ubuntu's snap installs Tailscale) only reaches PATH through the login profile. The same call from Windows Node returns sh: 1: tailscale: not found, exit 127. An apt-installed Tailscale in /usr/bin would still be found, which may be why the reporter's setup worked.

Fix (b1ec6ca). The probe falls back to /snap/bin/tailscale ip -4 when tailscale isn't found. The 36 tests in DesktopServerExposure.test.ts and DesktopWslEnvironment.test.ts and the desktop typecheck pass. No new unit test: the mocked spawner can't model a binary missing from that shell's PATH, so the real run below is the check.

Run 2, with b1ec6ca:

Advertised Pairing from the Mac
main LAN 192.168.88.x (default), Windows Tailscale 100.115.x.x, Tailscale HTTPS both timed out (8s)
this PR loopback, Tailscale HTTPS, distro Tailscale http://100.107.x.x:3874 200 in 0.13s, authenticated: true

Still not covered: the packaged desktop app's Connections UI. The advertised list above comes from the same service that UI reads, just without Electron. The distro's NAT address (172.24.x.x) was never advertised, as intended.

Verified in a real dev environment

verification attempted at 234a42076934994695081c97188ff367b3980d54 on a disposable ubuntu vm. outcome: unverifiable for the changed wsl behavior.

  • installed dependencies on github/main (2a738273e7) in a separate worktree and on the exact pr head. ran only one dev server at a time, stopping main by its captured process group first.
  • on main, used repository playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome, paired the real web client, added the real git checkout through the app, selected codex gpt-6.1-sol, and completed a turn that ran pwd and git rev-parse --show-toplevel. the client displayed verification-main-ok and done.
  • on the pr head, the real server started on ports 13773/5733. browser pairing returned 200, session/discovery returned 200, and websocket upgrade returned 101.
  • the pr client then stalled before project creation. server logs contain prolonged event-loop stalls, including 165967 ms and 309043 ms. no pr provider turn completed. this is a runtime finding; i cannot attribute it to this desktop-only diff. the attempt exceeded the ten-minute stall limit and was stopped, with no further provider attempts.

inspected command/runtime transcript

Not verified

this linux vm has no windows host, wsl.exe, or tailscale installation. i could not reproduce the original wrong-address bug on main or exercise the fix through the desktop connections ui. nat/mirrored networking, remote-tailnet pairing, pinned distro probes, snap tailscale fallback, explicit lan overrides, probe-failure fallback, and tailscale https remain unverified here. native mobile clients were not exercised.

no before/after capture or recording proves the changed interaction, so none is presented as evidence. the earlier contributor windows/mac result is useful discussion, but is not a result i reproduced. ci reports 30 successful checks; that does not establish runtime correctness. no source changes or pushes were made. task dev servers and browsers have been stopped.

[claude-opus-5-5] RESPONDING ON BEHALF OF ISHAAN

Thanks @maria-rcks. On the event-loop stall: this PR only changes apps/desktop, and vp run dev doesn't load any of it. So the PR head's server and web came from its merge base 220eb73524, which is 273 commits behind the 2a738273e7 baseline you ran on main. Those commits include event-loop hang fixes such as #26183 and #26177. I can't tell which one, if any, explains your stall.

I merged main (dac30f602d), so the PR head now runs the same server and web as your baseline. Then I repeated your flow on that head (Ubuntu under WSL2, Linux x86_64), using an empty worktree .t3:

[dev-runner] serverPort=14583 webPort=6543 baseDir=<worktree>/.t3
POST /api/auth/browser-session -> 200
GET /.well-known/t3/environment -> 200
t3 project add /tmp/t3-23030-proj -> Added project a4689657-... (2.3s)
t3 thread start --provider claudeAgent --model claude-haiku-5-5 --wait "Run pwd and git rev-parse --show-toplevel, then reply with verification-pr-ok."
  /tmp/t3-23030-proj
  /tmp/t3-23030-proj
  verification-pr-ok
grep "event loop stalled" dev.log -> none, 12:12 to 12:19

Differences from your run: I added the project and ran the turn through the CLI rather than a browser. I also used Claude, because Codex isn't signed in under an empty dev home. Desktop tests (57), desktop typecheck and lint pass on the merge.

For the WSL behavior a Linux VM can't reach, the real Windows run is in the NAT pairing comment. In NAT mode with Tailscale only inside the distro, main advertised the Windows LAN and Windows Tailscale addresses, and neither was reachable from the Mac. This head advertised the distro's tailnet address, and the Mac paired with it (200, 0.13s). That run also found the snap PATH bug fixed in b1ec6ca. Mirrored mode, explicit LAN overrides, Tailscale HTTPS and mobile clients were not part of that run.
