Fixes #21967

Problem

If a tool call or thinking row sits just above the composer and the timeline is not pinned to the very end, expanding it leaves the new content behind the composer. Visible-position anchoring keeps the toggled row still (shouldRestoreVisibleContentPosition), and pinDisclosureToEnd only runs when the list is already at the end. Nothing checks whether the expanded content is still visible above composerOverlayHeight, so you have to scroll up by hand to read it.

Fix

After a work-row disclosure settles (the existing two-frame settle in scheduleDisclosureSettle), revealExpandedDisclosure measures the toggled row. If its bottom is under the composer overlay, it scrolls just enough to show it, but never moves the row header above the top anchor inset. A row taller than the usable viewport therefore stays readable from its header.

  • The math is a pure helper, resolveDisclosureRevealScrollDelta, in timelineScrollAnchoring.ts.
  • It applies only to disclosures that grow their own row: tool calls, reasoning, work groups and subagent groups. Turn and attempt folds show their content as later rows, so they keep their current behavior. Their collapsed argument is unchanged, so onToolOutputCollapsedAtEnd behaves as before.
  • Collapsing a row, and expanding while pinned to the end, behave as before.
  • The reveal also clears the 0.75rem fade that timeline-scroll-bottom-fade applies above the composer, so the last line is not left faded out.
  • Scrolling is smooth unless the user prefers reduced motion.

This fits the small-fix exception: one defect, a single code path in MessagesTimeline, no product-behavior change beyond keeping expanded content visible.

Verification

  • New browser test reveals a tool call expanded just above the composer (MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx): it renders a 200px composer overlay, places a tool row header just above it, expands it, and asserts the end of the expanded input is above the overlay and the header stays in view.
    • Without the fix it fails: expected 1248 to be less than or equal to 1001, so the content ended about 247px under the composer.
    • With the fix it passed 3 of 3 runs.
  • Unit tests for resolveDisclosureRevealScrollDelta in timelineScrollAnchoring.test.tsx.
  • vp test run --project unit --project browser src/components/chat/: 979 of 979 tests pass on the latest commit. restores a manual reading position after reopening and switching threads is intermittent in my environment and also failed 2 of 3 runs on unmodified main.
  • Before/after screenshots are in the comment below. They render the real MessagesTimeline with the app CSS in Chromium (Vitest browser mode), with a mock composer overlaid on the bottom 170px, before and after this change.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit, vp lint and vp fmt --check pass.

Not checked: a running desktop build with a live provider, and mobile. Mobile uses its own React Native timeline and is not touched by this change.

When a tool call or thinking row near the bottom of the timeline is
expanded while the list is not pinned to the end, visible-position
anchoring holds the row still and its new content grows under the
composer overlay. After the disclosure settles, scroll just enough to
bring the expanded row above the composer, without moving its header
past the top inset.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 1737b0b

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused web scrolling bug fix that adjusts only user-triggered expansion behavior near the composer, preserving pinned and unrelated disclosure paths. The pure scroll calculation and end-to-end behavior are covered by tests, with no schema, deployment, security, billing, or default-setting impact.

You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more.

The timeline masks the last 0.75rem above the composer, so revealing a
row only to the composer edge left its final line faded out.

Before/after screenshots. Same thread and scroll position: the "Search workspace" tool call sits just above the composer and is then expanded.

Collapsed Before: expanded After: expanded

Before, the header stays in place and the tool input is hidden behind the composer. After, the timeline scrolls just enough that the whole expanded input sits above the composer and its fade, with the header still in view.

These render the real MessagesTimeline with the app CSS in Chromium (Vitest browser mode), with a mock composer overlaid on the bottom 170px.

📝 Walkthrough

Disclosure expansion now adjusts the timeline scroll to reveal content obscured by the composer overlay. The adjustment runs after layout settles and is skipped for collapsed disclosures, pinned timelines, and turn or attempt folds.

Changes: Disclosure Reveal Scrolling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Calculate disclosure reveal distance
apps/web/src/components/chat/timelineScrollAnchoring.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/timelineScrollAnchoring.test.tsx
The helper calculates a bounded scroll delta for content obscured by the composer. Tests cover rows above the composer, obscured rows, oversized rows, and rows above the anchor inset.
Apply reveal scrolling to expanded rows
apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/MessagesTimeline.browser.test.tsx
MessagesTimeline applies the calculated adjustment after disclosure layout settles. Turn and attempt folds do not reveal their own rows. A browser test checks expanded tool content and its header around a composer overlay.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the problem, fix, scope, verification results, intermittent test behavior, and unverified environments. It uses "## Fix" instead of the template's "## Change" heading and does not include a separate "## Scope and approval" heading, but it provides the required scope-exception rationale and is otherwise complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy the coding requirements in issue #21967. MessagesTimeline calls resolveDisclosureRevealScrollDelta after the existing two-frame disclosure settle. The helper reveals content above the composer and fade, limits upward movement so the row header remains within CHAT_TIMELINE_ANCHOR_OFFSET, and supports rows taller than the usable viewport. The behavior applies to expanding work-row disclosures and preserves existing behavior for collapse, end-pinned timelines, turn folds, and attempt folds. Scrolling respects reduced-motion preferences. The PR adds a browser regression test and unit tests for the scroll-delta cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff stays within issue #21967. It changes one timeline code path, adds the pure scroll-delta helper, and adds focused browser and unit tests. The turn and attempt handling changes only identify disclosures that must not reveal their own row. No unrelated product area or behavior is changed.

Replace the fixed delays with a frame-aware condition wait.

The scrollTop update is synchronous, but lazy row measurement is not. A slow runner can complete the 200 ms delays before the layout settles, leaving the header below the composer when the assertion runs.

Wait through the list's frame-based layout update before checking the position. Keep the adjustment inside the retry callback. An immediate assertion after the scroll would pass before the lazy measurement runs and would not solve the timing issue.
