resolved path when resolution succeeds and otherwise retains the original

Taking over this one for the sidebar-threads-10 batch. I’ll preserve your commits, trim the tests, verify the workspace-relative copy behavior, and push the maintained fix here. |

Thanks, handing this over to you for the batch. The PR description records the latest focused checks and the independent native Electron menu test report. |

Thanks @westline-jordan — this correctly identified the distinction between the display label and the existing workspace-relative path metadata, including position suffixes and files outside the workspace. Continuing in #21497, which covers this same file-chip copy-path defect in one focused stack layer on origin. GitHub rejected maintainer pushes to this organization fork with HTTP 403 despite maintainer edits being enabled, so the verified rebuild had to move to an owned branch. Your contribution is credited in the PR and with commit co-authorship. I compared the original diff against the replacement: the production behavior is preserved, the menu-value helper is smaller, and the twelve added test rows were reduced to three in the existing logic suite. The standalone documentation page was omitted because the UI fix does not need a separate guide; no intended behavior was dropped. Both independent full-diff reviews are clean. The replacement has 236 passing focused tests across seven suites, scoped lint/format/typecheck, real Linux web copy/paste proof for project/worktree/outside paths, and passing current-head CI and bot checks. Platform limits and the remaining human review are explicit in its body. Closing this original in favor of #21497; nothing has been merged. |

Maintainer takeover: continuing in #21497, because GitHub denied pushes to this organization fork (HTTP 403). The replacement retains the intended behavior and credits @westline-jordan. Its current verification is recorded in the replacement PR.
What changed
Right-clicking a file chip in a message copies its display label for Copy relative path. For a workspace at
/Users/me/project, a file undersrc/main.tstherefore copiesproject/src/main.ts. For an absolute file outside the workspace, both copy actions return the absolute path.Use the existing workspace-relative metadata for the relative action and offer it only when that metadata is available. Keep the full-path value and line/column suffixes unchanged. Menu availability and selected clipboard values now come from the same small item builder. The newer absolute-path file preview behavior stays intact.
Why
The display label intentionally includes the workspace name and is unsuitable as a filesystem-relative path. This fixes that distinction in the shared web/desktop file-chip menu without adding another path resolver.
