Problem

An image sent into a running Claude turn that is over Anthropic's 5 MB per-image limit (measured as base64) ends the turn with image_error, "Claude stopped: an image in the conversation could not be processed." Claude Code shrinks the images of a message that starts a turn, but sends images queued into a running turn as they are.

#19364 fixed the dimension half by scaling attachments to 2000px. An image already within 2000px still passes through byte for byte up to the 10 MB wire cap. Anything between about 3.75 MB and 10 MB, such as a photo pasted as PNG or a dense screenshot, breaks the turn.

To reproduce: start a Claude turn that runs for a while, then attach and send a PNG within 2000px that is over ~3.75 MB.

Change

Clients now also fit image attachments to a byte limit when they are attached, in the same place as #19364:

  • Shared rule: IMAGE_ATTACHMENT_MAX_BYTES in packages/client-runtime/src/imageAttachmentSize.ts, next to IMAGE_ATTACHMENT_MAX_EDGE. It is 5 MiB of base64 expressed as decoded bytes (3,932,160).
  • Web and desktop: ChatComposer and desktop SnapShots pass that limit to the existing prepareImageForAttachment / compressImageToByteLimit instead of the 10 MB wire cap. The compressor is unchanged. It already scales over-2000px PNG/JPEG in their own format first, then re-encodes anything still over the budget.
  • Mobile: fitComposerImage covers the photo library, clipboard paste, native paste and the share sheet:
    • A PNG or JPEG over 2000px is scaled to 2000px in its own format, as before.
    • A PNG still over the byte limit after that is rendered to JPEG.
    • Any other image over the limit (PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP) is rendered to JPEG.
    • It now returns the resulting MIME type. Callers use it for the data URL, the attachment's mimeType and the name's extension.
  • Images within both limits are still not re-encoded. Only the header and the base64 length are checked.

The limit applies to every provider, as the 2000px rule from #19364 does. 3.75 MB is still far more than these models use for one image. The server has no image codec, and #19353's server-side decode was replaced by #19364's client-side fit, so this follows the client path.

Scope and approval

Fixes #20106. That issue documents the failure and the remaining code paths on main; it is not triaged yet. This is the byte-size half of #13647, the issue #19364 fixed for dimensions; #13647 was triaged as an accepted bug.

Verification

Reproduced against Claude Code 2.1.296 with claude -p --input-format stream-json. The image was sent as a second user message while a sleep 20 tool call was running:

Image base64 Mid-turn As turn start
1800×1200 PNG, 6,483,243 B 8,644,324 chars terminal_reason: image_error, "Image base64 size (8.2MB) exceeds API limit (5MB)" completed (Claude Code scaled it)
1200×1050 PNG, 3,782,268 B 5,043,024 chars completed –

So the threshold is the 5,242,880-character base64 limit, independent of dimensions. Both images are within 2000px and under the 10 MB cap, so main sends them unchanged.

Tests:

  • apps/mobile/src/lib/composerImages.test.ts has three new cases:
    • A 1800×1200 clipboard PNG one byte over the limit is rendered to JPEG without resizing. Name, MIME type and data URL become JPEG.
    • A 3024×1964 PNG whose 2000px PNG render is still over the limit is saved as PNG, then as JPEG.
    • A PNG exactly at the limit is kept byte for byte.
    • The first two fail on main and pass with this change.
  • Mobile, vp test run src/lib/composerImages.test.ts src/features/sharing/incoming-share-model.test.ts: 47 passed.
  • Web, vp test run src/lib/imageCompression.test.ts src/components/desktop/SnapShotCoordinator.test.ts: 53 passed. Existing cases already cover re-encoding an image under 2000px below a byte budget.
  • tsc-rs --noEmit passes for packages/client-runtime, apps/web and apps/mobile. Lint on the changed files has no errors; its warnings are pre-existing and on untouched lines. vp fmt --check is clean.

Not checked:

  • No browser or device run, and no live T3 session. The mobile tests stub the native renderer.
  • If the native renderer fails, the original is kept, as before. An image over the limit would then still fail mid-turn.
  • Images picked through the mobile Files document picker are file attachments and are not fitted, as in fix(clients): large pasted images no longer break later Claude image reads #19364.
  • An image over the limit loses animation (GIF) or transparency (PNG rendered to JPEG on mobile). On web the existing re-encode keeps alpha when WebP is available.

Model and harness: Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code via T3 Code.

… Claude turn

Claude Code sends images queued into a running turn as they are, and
Anthropic rejects an image whose base64 is over 5 MB. pingdotgg#19364 scaled
attachments to 2000px, but an image within 2000px still passed through
byte for byte up to the 10 MB wire cap and ended the turn with
image_error.

Clients now also fit image attachments to IMAGE_ATTACHMENT_MAX_BYTES
(5 MB of base64) when they are attached.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the default image-attachment processing threshold across web, desktop, and mobile, causing some existing attachments to be recompressed or converted before sending. The cross-client behavioral change and its effect on image fidelity require human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a client-runtime byte limit for image attachments. Web image preparation and mobile image fitting use the limit. Mobile attachment flows now preserve fitted MIME types and use JPEG filenames when fitting changes the image type.

Changes: Image attachment handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Attachment limit and web consumers
packages/client-runtime/src/imageAttachmentSize.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/desktop/SnapShotCoordinator.tsx, apps/web/src/lib/imageCompression.ts
The client runtime exports IMAGE_ATTACHMENT_MAX_BYTES, set to three quarters of 5 MiB. Web image preparation and snapshot compression use this limit instead of the provider send-turn image limit.
Mobile image fitting
apps/mobile/src/lib/composerImageFit.ts, apps/mobile/src/lib/composerImages.test.ts
fitComposerImage checks dimension and byte limits and returns the output MIME type. It scales oversized PNG and JPEG images, converts over-limit images to JPEG when needed, and returns null when no fitting is required. Tests cover JPEG conversion, PNG conversion after scaling, and the exact byte-limit boundary.
Mobile attachment MIME and filename propagation
apps/mobile/src/lib/composerImages.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/sharing/incoming-share-model.ts
Library, clipboard, pasted-URI, and incoming-share attachments use the fitted MIME type when available. Filenames change to JPEG names when the fitted type differs from the original.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: t3dotgg, bil0000

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d8703

Mobile images converted or resized to JPEG are not checked against the new 5 MB limit. A large, detailed photo can still exceed Claude's limit and end a running turn. Add a size check after rendering before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to d8703

The change tightens image preparation without demonstrated expansion of access or privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns mobile fallback behavior and existing asynchronous draft cleanup, rather than a confirmed new security vulnerability.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated change affects client-side image processing and attachment metadata for selected, pasted, shared, or captured images. The inspected changes do not demonstrate added tenant reach, credential access, or service authority; native codec internals were not verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Web re-encoding checks actual encoded output against its budget, reports failure when no encoding fits, and closes the decoded bitmap. ChatComposer skips failed preparations rather than publishing them. These are client-side preparation controls, not evidence of downstream authorization or validation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Regular-draft discard can race with image preparation: publication lacks the question-specific liveness gate, and the store can recreate a cleared draft. Production discard callers exist. This lifecycle condition predates the PR; additional re-encoding may lengthen its window, but no cross-target disclosure or material security regression was established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider generation-aware cancellation for regular drafts so late image preparation cannot restore content after explicit discard. This is lifecycle hardening for an existing condition, not a verified vulnerability introduced by this PR.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Check every rendered image against IMAGE_ATTACHMENT_MAX_BYTES.

If a scaled JPEG exceeds the byte limit, this branch returns it without a size check. The final JPEG render has the same gap. Mobile callers can attach either result when it remains below the larger send-turn cap, so an over-limit image can still reach Claude during a running turn. Measure each rendered result and retry at a smaller size or reject it when it cannot fit.

Note

Grok responding on behalf of Julius.

Closing as superseded. #20106, the only issue this PR fixes, was closed after the bug was fixed upstream in Claude Code v2.1.299, which now shrinks images attached while Claude is working. A 7.3 MB 1800x1200 PNG sent mid-turn works on Claude Code 2.1.300, and T3 uses the user's installed Claude Code, so no T3 client change is needed. Users on older versions should update Claude Code. Thanks for the thorough repro and tests!
