Long idle threads reprocess their whole context uncached when you come back after the provider's prompt cache expires. This adds an opt-in setting, Compact idle threads (Settings > General), that compacts a thread right before its cache expires, so returning only reprocesses the summary. Claude Code shipped the same behavior.

How it works:

  • IdleCompactionService sweeps every minute and on run completion. During the last 10% of the provider's cache TTL it sends a system-authored /compact marked with idleCompactionOfRunId through the normal dispatch path, and the orchestrator rechecks eligibility under the thread lock. Claude gets 60 min (subscription 1h cache); Codex and the others get 30 min (modern OpenAI caches, and a conservative guess where providers don't document one). It never fires after the TTL, when the cache is already cold.
  • It only compacts threads that are idle, completed normally, over 20k context tokens, not archived/settled/snoozed, with no pending request, background work, open background item or pending merge-back, on a provider enabled for the project. Subagent and delegated child threads are skipped.
  • An idle compaction is invisible except for one timeline row, "Compacted while idle, before the prompt cache expired", with token counts when the provider reports them. It never counts as activity or as the thread's outcome: sidebar status, Working shelf, unread, notifications, mobile push, auto-settle, snooze, errors, diff review turns, rewind targets, search, titles, forks, merge-back, handoffs and agent MCP reads all ignore it (isUserFacingRun / sessionErrorIsIdleMaintenance in packages/shared).
  • While it runs (a few seconds), new messages queue behind it. Rewind and merge-back sends, which cannot queue, get "Context compaction is finishing. Try again in a few seconds." Muse, Pi and OpenCode 2 compaction never takes a buffered background report, so the report reaches its own continuation.
  • Covers Codex, Claude, OpenCode, Muse, Pi, Grok and Antigravity. Grok never sends usage_update, so its adapter now reads the context size Grok stamps on every update (_meta.totalTokens). Cursor is skipped: its SDK hands /compress to the model as plain text, so a compaction only adds a turn and the next turn still resends the full context (verified live, 150k before and 152k after). ACP registry flavors without supportsCompaction are skipped.

T3CODE_IDLE_COMPACTION_DELAY_MS overrides the delay for local testing.

Evidence

Real runs on this branch with the delay forced to 1 minute:

Tokens reprocessed when returning to an idle thread, with and without idle compaction

Codex thread idles, the compaction runs and its row appears while the sidebar stays idle (final commit)

Codex thread after idle compaction, sidebar unchanged (final commit)

Claude Sonnet thread: idle compaction rows with token counts, before and after a return turn

Pi thread after idle compaction, one row

Compact idle threads setting in Settings > General

Verification

  • Live: Codex (197k to 19k input on return), Claude Sonnet (450k to 82k), Pi (79k to 26k). Each compacted once per idle spell with no /compact bubble, no unread flip, and no Working state in the sidebar.
  • Not exercised live: Grok (free usage limit; context reading checked against a recorded Grok session), OpenCode (free tier rejected), Muse (model inaccessible), Antigravity (not installed). They share the dispatch path; their adapter changes are covered by existing adapter tests.
  • Mobile shares the label and run selectors from client-runtime; it was not run in a simulator.
  • Focused server, shared, client-runtime, web, mobile and provider tests, typecheck, lint and knip pass.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a substantial opt-in background-compaction workflow spanning orchestration, provider adapters, persistence projections, and multiple clients, with provider calls, token usage, queueing, and presentation changes. Its new product setting also establishes a default and the change is broad rather than a small isolated option.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds an opt-in service that finds eligible idle threads and dispatches system /compact commands. It tracks idle compaction runs and timeline items, filters their activity from selected projections, and adds settings and timeline labels.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to ed6cd

With idle compaction enabled, a failed background compaction may show an error on an otherwise idle thread. The impact is small and the fix is local, so this can be addressed before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to ed6cd

The feature is off by default and rechecks conversation eligibility before automatic compaction. The inspected path restricts maintenance to an existing conversation and provider. No new access-control bypass was established, but provider-specific failure and recovery behavior remains partly unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Enablement permits unattended provider work across qualifying conversations managed by this server, not merely the currently open conversation. Each inspected dispatch remains bound to one thread, its latest eligible source run, and its current provider instance; no new cross-instance destination is supplied by the maintenance command.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The exposed maintenance marker does not by itself establish a websocket forgery path. Websocket ingress replaces message provenance with a user actor, while maintenance dispatch requires a system actor. This rejects that specific attempted privilege transition; it is not a conclusion about every ingress path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new autonomous caller inherits the existing execution policy and provider-session path. That common path also touches the thread's existing MCP credential activity before invoking compaction. This expands when existing execution infrastructure is reached, but the inspected code does not demonstrate a new credential scope or privilege grant.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The common provider-start failure path interrupts event consumption and writes a failed terminal result only for the current run attempt. Together with locked eligibility and durable command identity, this provides failure-containment controls; provider-native interruption and restart recovery remain only partially inspected.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make the maintenance recovery policy explicit: distinguish intentional at-most-once behavior from retryable failure, and preserve source-run identity and provider-state reconciliation if retries are introduced.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Filter idle-compaction errors from the runtime summary.

The Pi adapter stores a failed turn's message in providerSession.lastError before it emits turn.terminal. An idle-compaction run uses this same path. deriveThreadRuntime currently passes that error to threadErrorSummary, so the runtime summary can expose a maintenance failure.

Use the same latest-physical-run check already used by usage-limit presentation.

Re the outside-diff threadExecution.ts finding: fixed in 202002e. deriveThreadRuntime now drops the provider session error when the latest physical run is an idle compaction, except when the caller opts in with includeIdleCompaction (the open chat), where the real provider error stays visible.

The 20K floor seems low for this. Claude Code's idleCompaction defaults to 200K and won't go below 100K, and T3's own stale-thread Compact chip uses 100K. At 20K, a cold re-read is cheap anyway, so the compaction mostly loses context for little saving. Could the threshold match Claude Code's 200K default, or be configurable?

Batch sidebar-threads-18 assessment: blocked pending maintainer policy and provider verification; no code pushed. This is a new automatic provider action spanning server, clients, and eight provider adapters, rather than a narrow scheduler repair.

The current idleCompactionWindow uses only driver identity and hardcodes Claude to 60 minutes even though its own comment identifies API-key sessions with a five-minute cache. Those sessions would compact after their cache is cold. Other drivers share a guessed 30-minute TTL, and the serialized eligibility check does not enforce the cache deadline after waiting for the thread lock. There is also an unresolved product choice between the 20k context floor and the larger threshold raised in review.

Human next steps: approve the context threshold and supported provider/auth-mode policy; obtain a reliable session cache lifetime (or skip sessions whose lifetime is unknown); enforce the actual deadline under the dispatch lock; then capture current-head provider-backed evidence for supported modes, queued user input, failure, and unchanged sidebar/unread behavior. This headless Linux VM cannot establish the required authenticated provider and native-client matrix. The existing demo media is historical evidence, not validation of a rebuilt scheduler.

Given this Codex change I think it would be good to enable it for most providers but not Codex: https://x.com/thsottiaux/status/2112712984644784534?s=20.
