Problem

The mobile app has no crash or error reporting. When it crashes in production we find out from users, with no stack. We want crashes and JS errors in Axiom alongside our existing relay traces, with readable stacks.

Change

Mobile: expo-observe. It records unhandled JS errors, native crashes (Android Java/Kotlin plus OS crash records, iOS via MetricKit) and startup metrics. RenderErrorBoundary now reports the render errors it catches, since those never reach Observe's global handler. Observe's endpointUrl is set in app.config.ts from T3CODE_RELAY_URL. If no relay is configured (forks, local builds), dispatching is turned off; otherwise Observe would fall back to o.expo.dev under our EAS project.

Relay: POST /v1/mobile/observe/:projectId/v1/:signal (new raw mobileTelemetry group in RelayApi). Observe can't target Axiom directly: it sends no auth headers and puts the EAS project id in every path. The route forwards logs, metrics and traces to their Axiom datasets using a relay-held ingest token. It passes Axiom's status and Retry-After back so Observe's retry and backoff still work. Requests are rate limited per IP (fails open, like hooks) and capped at 2 MiB (413, which Observe handles by splitting batches). Expo's Observe dashboard receives nothing.

Symbolication at ingest. For JS exception log records, the relay looks up the crashing bundle's map in R2 and rewrites exception.stacktrace:

  • Each report names one map. Observe sends an update id only for an OTA launch, so a report with one uses <platform>/ota/<expo.app.update_id>.map; without one the app ran its embedded bundle and uses <platform>/build/<expo.eas_build.id>.map. The build map never stands in for a missing OTA map, since its offsets belong to a different bundle.
  • It records relay.symbolication.status, .source_map, and .raw_stacktrace on the record.
  • Hermes runtime frames (InternalBytecode.js) and native frames are left alone.

Our production Hermes map is a single line with ~1.2M segments. Decoding it with @jridgewell/trace-mapping uses ~130 MB of heap, more than a Worker isolate has. sourceMap.ts decodes straight into typed arrays instead (19 MB, ~160 ms). Decoded maps are cached per isolate, two at a time: the cache is built in the Worker constructor, because Alchemy rebuilds the router layers on every request. A map that would decode past 32 MB (counting its arrays and source paths) is refused before anything is allocated, and rewriting may lengthen one request by at most 1 MiB, so a malformed map or a flood of frames can't exhaust the isolate.

Map uploads (R2).

  • OTA updates: eas update --emit-metadata, then scripts/upload-sourcemaps.mts ota dist, in both production publish paths.
  • Store builds: an eas-build-on-success hook uploads the embedded bundle's map. That's the Android release map from the RN Gradle plugin, and on iOS the map written to SOURCEMAP_FILE, now set in eas.json for preview and production.
  • sourcesContent is stripped, so source text never lands in the bucket.
  • Upload problems are warnings and never fail a build or an OTA publish.

Opt-out: "Send crash reports". A switch in Settings > About T3 Code > Diagnostics, on by default, the same opt-out model as the server and desktop. Off calls Observe.configure({ dispatchingEnabled: false }). Observe drops reports while sending is off rather than holding them, so the app never configures it off just to wait for the setting: Observe keeps its last configuration across launches, so the previous session's choice applies until the setting loads. The switch only shows in builds that have a relay to send to. docs/user/telemetry.md gains a mobile section.

Before After, on (default) After, off

Stack additions: the t3-code-mobile-logs-* and t3-code-mobile-metrics-* datasets (30-day retention, matching the privacy policy), an ingest token for them, the t3-code-mobile-sourcemaps-* bucket, and a Cloudflare token that can only write objects to that bucket.

Setup required before merge

  1. Give the relay deploy token (CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN) Workers R2 Storage: Edit and Account API Tokens: Edit, then deploy. Alchemy creates the t3-code-mobile-sourcemaps-prod bucket and an upload token that can only write objects to that one bucket (the bucket-scoped requirement).

  2. Read the token's credentials. The deploy log shows them redacted, so read them from state (the value is under __redacted__):

cd infra/relay && vp exec alchemy state read T3CodeRelay/prod/output

mobileSourceMapsUploadCredentials is a JSON value with endpoint, bucketName, accessKeyId and secretAccessKey.

  3. Store it as the MOBILE_SOURCEMAPS_R2 secret:

    • a GitHub Actions repository secret, used by mobile-eas-production.yml for OTA updates
    • an EAS environment variable with secret visibility in production only, used by the build hook

Without it, everything still works, but stacks stay minified (uploads are skipped with a warning).

How the token is kept from untrusted code:

    • Fork PRs get no repository secrets under pull_request, and no pull_request_target workflow references this one.
    • In CI, only the dedicated "Upload OTA source maps" step gets it, not eas update and the npm dependencies it runs.
    • It is not in the EAS preview environment, because PR preview builds run the PR's code there. secret visibility also keeps it out of eas env:pull.
    • If it leaks anyway, it can only write to this bucket. The relay skips any stored map over 16 MiB without reading it, so a planted map can't exhaust the Worker's memory. The worst case is wrong or missing symbolication until the maps are re-uploaded.
    • Anyone with write access to the repo can already read every repository secret (and EXPO_TOKEN, which reaches the EAS secret). That is unchanged and outside this PR.
  4. This is a native change: it adds a native module and the Observe endpoint is compiled into the app, so it needs a store build.

Ops notes are in docs/operations/relay-observability.md.

Scope and approval

Requested by a maintainer, who chose: Axiom only (no copy to Expo), a bucket-scoped upload token, maps for both OTA updates and store builds, and symbolication at ingest.

Verification

  • Hermes column convention, on real Hermes output: compiled a script with hermesc -O -output-source-map, ran it in the Hermes VM, and symbolicated the printed stack. All 4 frames resolve to the exact throw and call sites. That output is the fixture in sourceMap.test.ts.
  • Decoder against our real map: ran a real expo export --platform android --source-maps (stripped map 9 MB, which is above Expo's own 5 MB source map upload limit). Compared 50k random lookups against @jridgewell/trace-mapping: 0 mismatches.
  • Relay tests: forwarding per signal, symbolication with cache reuse, missing map, Retry-After passthrough, 502 when Axiom is unreachable, 404 / 413 / 429, and the memory and growth limits.
  • Preview stage pr-19093 (via ci(relay): deploy labeled PRs to relay preview stages #23872's workflow): all 26 resources deployed, including the bucket-scoped upload token, so the CI Cloudflare token can create it.
  • Real device: a release build on a Pixel 8a pointed at pr-19093 sent a JS crash (expo.error.source=global, fatal) and a native crash (nativeCrash) that both landed in t3-code-mobile-logs-pr-19093. Replaying the JS crash through the local relay with that build's map symbolicated it to the exact throw line.
  • Switch, on the same Pixel: with it on, a native crash was sent after relaunch; with it off, the same steps sent nothing and Axiom received only the first crash. The setting survives a force-stop. Turning it back on drops reports from while it was off, even ones recorded since Observe's last pass: off, background, am crash, relaunch, turn on without backgrounding, background. That crash never reached Axiom, and a control crash sent with it on did.
  • Local relay: vp run --filter t3code-relay mobile-telemetry:local runs the real ingest and symbolication with local stand-ins for R2 and Axiom (see docs/operations/relay-observability.md).
  • Upload script: unit tests for OTA metadata pairing, build map discovery, a SigV4-signed PUT against a local server, and stripping. Also smoke-ran the CLI on the real export: it PUT 8.7 MB to the right key.
  • expo config resolves extra.eas.observe.endpointUrl when a relay URL is set and omits it when not. Mobile typecheck passes, the lockfile passes vp i --frozen-lockfile, and scoped knip is clean.

Not verified:

  • The eas-build-on-success hook and SOURCEMAP_FILE on EAS's servers, and so symbolication of a store build end to end.
  • iOS on a device (the simulators were unavailable).

These need the setup above plus one EAS build.

Implemented with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).

Taking over this one for maintainer batch pull-request-14. Thanks @gabrielelpidio for the Observe/relay/source-map investigation. I am checking the current draft and its deployment/build prerequisites first. This batch must not push unverified changes: real crash delivery, deployed Axiom ingestion and EAS source-map uploads remain explicit gates, so I will leave a precise blocked handoff if they cannot be proved from this headless Linux environment.

Maintainer batch pull-request-14: blocked; draft left unchanged at d5df86f78e. Thanks @gabrielelpidio for establishing Observe's relay path, bundle identifiers and the compact Hermes-map approach.

I checked the current description, full initial diff/inventory, current comments/reviews/checks and complete review threads, then checked the native startup/configuration, error-boundary report, raw relay forwarding/symbolication, R2 resource/token definition and build/OTA upload paths on this head. The feature is still missing on the pinned main used for this batch; existing mobile tracing does not provide crash reporting. The PR is still conflicting with main. The published checks passed on the original draft, with native preview/static-analysis jobs skipped; they do not establish real crash delivery or compatibility with current main.

The missing proof cannot be replaced by a headless relay mock: the implementation needs deployed Axiom acceptance of Observe's exact logs/metrics/traces payloads, the actual Alchemy bucket-scoped token policy, EAS-produced Hermes maps, and a new native binary sending a real crash. No deployed verification environment or upload credentials were supplied for this batch. I did not deploy resources, change secret policies, publish a build/update, reduce tests, rebuild code or push changes. There are no fresh test/implementation/adversarial-review rounds to misrepresent as completed. The original tests and source remain unchanged; I did not rerun their historical 435-test claim.

Concrete continuation steps for a maintainer with infrastructure and device access:

  1. Resolve the workflow, mobile configuration/dependency/startup, relay worker and lockfile conflicts against current main, preserving the existing mobile OTLP tracing. Rebuild only the capture → relay → source-map path, then run focused relay/map/upload tests, affected typechecks and lint in the separate test/implementation/review phases.
  2. Use a controlled Alchemy stage to provision the Axiom OTLP logs/metrics datasets and ingest token, R2 map bucket, Worker read binding and bucket-only object-write upload token. The deploy token needs the documented R2 storage and account-token permissions. Verify the deployed upload token can write the intended bucket and cannot write another bucket; a policy-shaped unit fixture does not prove that.
  3. Transfer mobileSourceMapsUploadCredentials privately into MOBILE_SOURCEMAPS_R2 in GitHub Actions and EAS production only, keeping it out of untrusted preview builds. Set the verification binary's T3CODE_RELAY_URL to that stage. Do not paste the credentials into this PR or logs.
  4. Build trusted iOS and Android release-style verification clients containing the native Observe module and compiled relay endpoint; a JS reload or ordinary preview client is insufficient. Verify eas-build-on-success runs and uploads each embedded map under <platform>/build/<EAS_BUILD_ID>.map. At this exact head SOURCEMAP_FILE is configured only in the production profile, so do not assume an ordinary preview build proves the iOS upload path. Upload each controlled OTA map under its exact <platform>/ota/<updateId>.map and verify both platform exports survive the publish workflow. Upload warnings are nonfatal, so a green build alone is insufficient.
  5. On those clients, trigger a known unhandled JS error, a caught render error and a native crash in disposable test state; relaunch as needed for native crash delivery. Confirm the deployed relay receives them and Axiom accepts each signal, then verify embedded-build and OTA JS stacks resolve to the known source file/line with relay.symbolication.status = symbolicated, the matching map key and preserved raw stack. Native crash stacks are deliberately not JS-symbolicated by this implementation. Also check missing-map fallback and a build with no configured relay, which must not dispatch to Expo.
  6. Attach sanitized delivery/build/upload evidence for the rebuilt head, finish fresh independent reviews and current-head CI, then obtain infrastructure/native approval before leaving draft. macOS, Windows, Electron, iOS and Android were not exercised in this Linux assessment.

No merge performed. This is a prerequisite handoff, not a code approval.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR introduces a substantial mobile crash-reporting and symbolication capability spanning the app, relay, Axiom/R2 infrastructure, and release workflows. It also enables reporting by default for configured builds and adds static-analysis suppression directives, so the changes require human review.

Correction to my inline comment on infra/relay/scripts/mobile-telemetry-local.ts: the PUT route is a local mock S3 adapter, not a production domain capability. Service extraction is not warranted here; no change is needed for that comment.

Walkthrough

The mobile app now reports crash and error telemetry through the relay and provides a setting to control crash reporting. Build and OTA workflows upload source maps. The relay forwards telemetry to Axiom and symbolicates supported JavaScript exception stacks using maps stored in R2.

Use the remaining relay deadline for upstream forwarding.

relayRequestDeadline starts before body reading and symbolication, but forward starts a fresh seven-second timeout afterward. If pre-forward work takes more than two seconds, the outer deadline can return relay_request_deadline_exceeded before forward returns the intended upstream_timeout.

Pass the remaining request budget into forward and reserve a small response margin, while retaining the nine-second relay deadline as the hard cap. The existing timeout test sends an empty log body and checks only status 504, so it does not detect this response mismatch.

margin for returning the response. Keep the nine-second relay deadline as the
hard cap and return the intended `upstream_timeout` response when forwarding
exhausts its available budget.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding "Use the remaining relay deadline for upstream forwarding" (MobileTelemetry.ts:297-329, review of 06a5fe4): I'm leaving this as is, and here's why.

  • What the 7 s change fixed: before it, upstream_timeout could never fire. The 10 s upstream timeout always lost to the 9 s deadline, so that branch was dead code. Now it fires whenever Axiom is the slow part, which is what the outcome label is for.
  • Your remaining case: the body read plus symbolication would have to take more than about 2 s, and then Axiom would also have to hang. In that case the client still gets a 504, exactly as it would from upstream_timeout, and Observe retries it the same way. The relay still logs relay request exceeded deadline with the URL and sets relay.request.deadline_exceeded on the span. So the only thing lost is the mobile-specific outcome label. Since the time went somewhere other than Axiom, the generic deadline label is arguably the more accurate one anyway.
  • Cost of the fix: carrying the remaining deadline into forward would tie this module to the router's start time and deadline arithmetic. That's more machinery than a label difference in a rare path is worth.

Happy to revisit if a maintainer wants the per-request budget.

The mobile app had no crash or error reporting. It now uses expo-observe,
with its endpointUrl pointed at a new relay route that forwards the
OTLP/JSON to Axiom: Observe cannot send auth headers and prefixes every
path with the EAS project id, so it cannot target Axiom directly.

On the way through, the relay symbolicates JavaScript exception stacks
with the crashing bundle's source map from a new R2 bucket. A production
Hermes map is one line with ~1.1M segments, so maps are decoded into
typed arrays (~40 MB instead of ~130 MB with trace-mapping) and cached
per isolate. CI uploads OTA maps after `eas update`; an
eas-build-on-success hook uploads the embedded bundle's map.

Testing crash reporting end to end needed a deployed relay stage, which
needs Cloudflare, PlanetScale, Axiom and Clerk credentials. A local
script now serves the relay's own ingest and symbolication, with a temp
directory standing in for R2 (it takes the upload script's S3 PUTs) and
for Axiom (it keeps each forwarded payload and prints how each exception
was symbolicated).

Observe reports an update id only for OTA launches, so falling back to the
embedded bundle's map rewrote OTA stacks with wrong locations. Each report now
names one map. Oversized maps are also rejected before their arrays are sized.

The ingest route is unauthenticated, and a request could name any number
of bundle ids, each an R2 read that evicts a cached map. One app names
one bundle, or two across an OTA update, so further ids go unsymbolicated.

Observe drops pending reports only when a dispatch pass runs while
sending is off. A report recorded after the last pass, such as a crash
from just before turning reporting back on, still went out. Turning it
on now runs a pass first. The switch also waits for each save, so a
failed save can no longer roll back a later choice.

Turning reporting on awaits a dispatch pass first. If the setting was
turned off during that pass, the stale enable then switched it back on.
Only the latest call now applies.

Three gaps in the opt-out:
- Turning reporting off saved first and stopped sending after, so a
report could go out during the save. Sending now stops first and
resumes only if the save fails.
- When preferences could not be read, the switch stayed disabled and
the previous session's sending setting carried on. An unreadable
setting now turns sending off, and the switch can still change it.
- Builds without a relay left Observe's native endpoint unset, so a
first launch could dispatch to Expo's ingest before JavaScript turned
sending off. Those builds now point it at an address that never
  resolves.

Startup could read "on" while Settings was saving an opt-out, then turn
sending back on after it. Startup now applies what it read only if
nothing has configured reporting since.

Mobile telemetry waited up to 10 s for Axiom, but the relay cuts every
non-hook request off at 9 s, so a slow Axiom surfaced as the generic
deadline error instead of upstream_timeout. Axiom now gets 7 s, leaving
room for reading the body and symbolicating.
