Takes over #18669 by @Batuhan1999, who found the cause and the naming scheme. Rebuilt on current main.

Problem

Opening the terminal in a nested Claude subagent thread fails with TerminalHistoryError: Failed to read terminal history, caused by ENAMETOOLONG. The history file is terminal_<base64url(threadId)>.log, and a nested subagent id (about 210 characters) encodes to a 288-byte filename. Linux and macOS cap a filename at 255 bytes, so open and attach fail, and every later write fails too. The same path runs when a settled delegated-task thread's runOnSettle cleanup opens a terminal (reported by @poroburu), so automatic cleanup failed on those threads as well. The legacy <sanitized id>.log lookup hits the same error for ids over about 250 characters.

Change

apps/server/src/terminal/Manager.ts:

  • A history name that fits in 255 bytes keeps exactly its current path, so no existing file moves and nothing migrates. Only a name that would not fit, and so could never have been written, switches to terminal_sha256.<digest>[_<digest>].log. . is outside the base64url alphabet, so the two forms cannot collide. Deleting a thread's history matches both forms.
  • The legacy lookup and delete are skipped when the legacy name itself would not fit, since no file could exist under it.
  • The digest comes from node:crypto, so historyPath stays a plain function and no call site or service requirement changes. The file opts out of the nodeBuiltinImport diagnostic the same way attachmentStore.ts and cloud/environmentKeys.ts do.

Compared with the original PR, this drops the Effect Crypto service and the yield* threaded through every history call site.

Verification

Tests in apps/server/src/terminal/Manager.test.ts, run on Linux against the real filesystem limit:

  • persists history for a $label thread id too long to encode into a filename, with the real subagent id from the report and a 300-character id (which also exceeds the legacy-name limit), plus a 128-character terminal id. Opens, writes, closes and reopens both terminals, then deletes and checks the logs directory is empty.
  • keeps reading and deleting history at an encoded path that already fit: a 120-character id whose file is pre-written at the old path reads back from it, and a long terminal id on the same thread lands in the hashed form; deleting the thread removes both.

Before, with Manager.ts from main:

× persists history for a subagent thread id too long to encode into a filename
× persists history for a 300-character thread id too long to encode into a filename
× keeps reading and deleting history at an encoded path that already fit
[cause]: Error: ENAMETOOLONG: name too long, access '…/logs/terminals/terminal_dGhyZWFkOnByb3ZpZGVyOmNsYXVkZUFnZW50…MxYjA.log'

After:

 Test Files 1 passed (1)
      Tests 96 passed (96)

apps/server typecheck: exit 0. Lint and format on both files: clean. Two independent adversarial review rounds (Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6-Sol) found no blocking issues; they asked for the mixed encoded-plus-hashed deletion case, which is now covered.

Not verified: a packaged desktop build on macOS or Windows. This is a server-only change with no UI, so screenshots do not apply.

Terminal history filenames embed the base64url thread and terminal ids.
Nested subagent thread ids encode to more than the 255-byte filename
limit, so opening their terminal failed with ENAMETOOLONG. Hash id parts
that would not fit, and skip the legacy-name lookup for ids that could
never have had a legacy file.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The server fix changes terminal-history filename derivation and adds a production static-analysis suppression directive. Existing encoded history files may also need compatibility handling, since IDs that previously fit the filesystem limit can now resolve to new hashed paths.

Hashing every id over 120 encoded characters moved history files that
were valid before, so upgrading lost their history and deletes missed
them. Keep the exact encoded filename whenever it fits the 255-byte
limit and hash the ids only when it does not.

📝 Walkthrough

Terminal history filenames now use encoded names when they fit the 255-byte limit and hashed names when they do not. History loading, legacy migration, and deletion use the updated filename rules. Tests cover long IDs, terminal-specific histories, compatibility, persistence, and deletion.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 95d99

The change fixes long-ID failures while preserving existing encoded paths. However, a hashed history filename can also be interpreted as another thread’s legacy filename, allowing unintended migration or deletion. The demonstrated impact is limited to terminal histories on the same server under existing terminal-operation permissions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The new hashed namespace is not isolated from legacy history lookup and cleanup. If long thread A has digest D, its default history is terminal_sha256.D.log. A different valid thread ID terminal_sha256.D has that same legacy path: opening it without a current history can copy A’s contents into the other thread’s history and remove A’s file; deleting its history can also remove A’s file. Conversely, bulk deletion for A can match unrelated legacy files beginning terminal_sha256.D_. This extends a pre-existing namespace weakness to newly supported histories and breaks thread-scoped ownership and cleanup containment.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated alias affects history files within one manager’s configured logs directory. It requires a colliding identifier or filename and, through the inspected RPC path, terminal-operation permission. Cross-server, cross-tenant, credential, or infrastructure-authority expansion was not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An authorized caller knowing long thread A can derive digest D and submit thread ID terminal_sha256.D. If that ID lacks a current history, legacy migration can read A’s hashed file, associate its contents with the supplied ID, and remove the original. Cleanup can also delete the file. This demonstrates wrong-thread history association and destructive cleanup, not a demonstrated authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Base64URL encoding and SHA-256 digest filenames avoid raw path separators, and the dot marker separates encoded from hashed current forms. That control does not separate current files from legacy names: legacy sanitization preserves the dot and permits the hashed stem.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Locks and persistence drains are keyed by raw thread/session identity, so they do not coordinate distinct IDs that alias the same file. Migration writes the current file before removing the legacy file; interruption or cleanup failure can leave both copies, after which reads prefer the current path. That recovery behavior predates the PR, but does not repair the new ownership alias.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Isolate hashed histories from the legacy filename namespace, for example in a dedicated directory, and add ownership regression cases covering legacy lookup and both deletion modes against hashed histories.

Drop the node:crypto import and its nodeBuiltinImport suppression. The
history path now takes the digest from the Crypto service and computes
it only for names that would not fit.

…filename limit

Keep historyPath a plain function by hashing with node:crypto instead of the
Effect Crypto service, drop the per-call-site yield*, and cover the case where
one thread keeps an encoded default log next to a hashed terminal log.

The long-ID failure also affects T3-delegated tasks when their runOnSettle cleanup opens a terminal; it is not limited to opening a nested provider thread's terminal manually. In an installed 0.1.0 Linux server, that path failed with TerminalHistoryError / ENAMETOOLONG before the cleanup command could run. No private identifiers or filesystem paths are needed to reproduce the filename limit.

Current main at ab6be13d438abeace7617e8d789d59cf2e880f42 still Base64URL-encodes the complete thread ID and uses it directly in the history filename. A synthetic 300-character ASCII thread ID yields a 413-byte default history basename, exceeding Linux's usual 255-byte component limit. This makes the bounded-name fix relevant to automatic task cleanup as well as interactive terminals.

I have not run this PR's candidate or independently validated its migration and deletion behavior.

Investigated with GPT-6.1 Sol through Codex in T3 Code.

Thanks, that matches: historyPath is the only place a history filename is built, so the settle-time cleanup terminal for a delegated task goes through the same bounded name as an interactive open. I've added that path to the description.
