Add Project GitHub lookup still requires an exact owner/repo match and replaces provider failures with a generic toast. Keep lookup exact, but surface allowlisted GitHub details and show them in the palette (and mobile banner) instead of a top-right toast.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — The PR is a focused add-project error-reporting fix: it preserves lookup behavior, safely forwards only approved provider messages, and prevents stale failures from appearing for newer input. Its UI and shared-runtime changes are bounded, with targeted tests and no schema, deployment, security, billing, or configuration-default impact. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The lookup-error fix has focused tests, but the PR explicitly lacks before/after screenshots for its web and mobile UI changes. Please add those images and a short recording showing a failed lookup, editing the input, and retrying, as required by the verification guide. The browser failure explains the gap; it doesn't demonstrate the changed UI. |
…hanges Typing or leaving the GitHub lookup step kept the in-flight generation valid, so a miss could still paint after the user had moved on. Invalidate that generation and reset pending state when the query or flow changes, on web and mobile.

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The web and mobile recordings now demonstrate the requested fail → edit → retry interactions. To clarify the before/after screenshot requirement, “before” means the UI before this code change. Please add a pre-fix screenshot of the generic lookup error on web and mobile alongside the post-fix images already supplied. No further recording is needed. |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winInvalidate the pending lookup when handling an add-project open intent.
OpenAddProjectcan update an already-open palette. The multi-environment branch then changes the view without invalidating the lookup. If the lookup resolves afterward, its unchanged generation allows it to set the flow to the old repository confirmation step.🐛 Suggested fix

@juliusmarminge thanks for clarifying. The PR description now has before and after shots for both web and mobile, where "before" is |
Problem
When a GitHub repository lookup fails in Add Project, the user only sees a generic message: "Source control repository operation lookupRepository failed for github: The source control operation could not be completed." Web shows it as a toast, mobile as the in-form banner. GitHub's own useful message, like "Repository not found. Check the owner and name and try again.", is stripped on the server, so a typo in
owner/repolooks the same as a missing credential or a rate limit.Reproduce on
main: Add Project → GitHub repository → enteroctocat/this-repo-does-not-exist-t3-lookup→ Enter.Change
Lookup stays exact. The failure now says what went wrong, in the place the user is looking:
mapRepositoryErrorstill masks raw CLI/API text, but passes through an exact allowlist of GitHub messages that are already written as user-facing copy (owner/name format, not found, missing or expired credential, rate limit).sourceControlRepositoryErrorMessageprefers that detail over the wrapped operation message.role="alert"instead of a toast. Typing clears it, and a stale lookup can't overwrite a newer query. The server, shared helper and both clients change together because the message is removed on the server and each client formats the error itself; fixing only one layer leaves the generic text on screen.
Scope and approval
There is no prior issue or discussion. I'm submitting this as a small, focused fix for an obvious bug: a failed lookup hides a message the provider already produces, and the user can't tell why it failed. It adds no feature, setting or workflow, and exact
owner/repolookup is unchanged. Two things go slightly beyond swapping the text, both part of showing this one error correctly:
The messages newly sent to clients are fixed strings with no repository names, tokens or CLI output in them.
mapRepositoryErroris shared, so the same allowlisted text can also appear on clone and publish failures.Verification
Manual, with the lookup
octocat/this-repo-does-not-exist-t3-lookup:main@ d45d1a1): web shows the generic toast; mobile shows the generic text in the banner.octocat/Hello-Worldsucceeds and moves on to the destination step.Focused tests:
vp test run apps/server/src/sourceControl/SourceControlRepositoryService.test.ts packages/client-runtime/src/operations/projects.test.tspasses (2 files, 36 tests). They cover the allowlisted detail reachingSourceControlRepositoryError.detailwith the original cause kept, and the client helper preferring that detail. Not checked: iOS, and the credential and rate-limit messages, which I did not trigger by hand. Mobile was checked on an Android emulator only.
