…etch timeout When Git would use its default OpenSSH transport and the local ssh accepts LogVerbose (OpenSSH 8.5+), fetchRemote sets a GIT_SSH_COMMAND that logs only ssh's sign-request and packet-send debug lines. A sign request with no packet after it for 10 seconds means the SSH agent is waiting on the user, so the fetch stops git and fails with an error that says to approve or unlock the key. Custom SSH commands, GIT_SSH overrides, older ssh and Windows keep the existing behaviour. ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR substantially changes the default OpenSSH fetch path by injecting diagnostics, adding authorization timeout handling, and terminating stalled Git processes. Because it affects SSH authentication behavior and adds cross-cutting process/configuration logic, it requires human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Git passes GIT_SSH_COMMAND on to the fetches it runs in submodules, where it replaces each submodule's own core.sshCommand or ssh.variant. The watch now stays off when the repository has a .gitmodules file or any submodule.* config key; a deinitialized submodule keeps no config key, but Git still fetches it. The watch also stays off when GIT_CONFIG is set, because git config then reads only that file while git fetch ignores it, so the config check could miss a command the fetch would use. A sign request now counts only after ssh has logged a packet line. ssh always sends key exchange packets before it signs, so an ssh whose packet line stops matching keeps the command timeout instead of raising a false alarm. The cached OpenSSH probe is checked before the config read. The probe may take 3 seconds instead of 1, so a slow first run on a busy host does not turn the watch off for the server's life. The message now also covers touching a security key. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ing SSH signing A T3 project can point at a directory below the repository root, but the .gitmodules check looked only in the fetch directory. A deinitialized submodule leaves no config key and Git still fetches it, so a fetch from a subdirectory could get the injected GIT_SSH_COMMAND. Git passes that variable on to the submodule's fetch, where it replaces the submodule's own core.sshCommand and leaves its ssh.variant in effect. The watch now finds the worktree root through the driver's cached repository paths and checks .gitmodules there. When the root cannot be resolved, for example outside a repository or in a bare one, the watch stays off. The config check now counts only submodule.<name>.url and submodule.<name>.active. Host-wide settings such as submodule.recurse or submodule.fetchJobs no longer turn the watch off in every repository. Tests: the SSH fetch tests run in a real repository so the root lookup works. The waits for the OpenSSH probe and for the fetch to read its stderr fail after 1 second of real time with a named assertion instead of hanging until the test timeout. The fresh-window test now checks terminal outcomes, a fetch that completes at 17 seconds and one that fails after 18, with no real-time wait on its passing path. New rows cover a .gitmodules file above the fetch directory, no repository, a bare repository, a probe slower than its bound, submodule.recurse, and empty GIT_SSH, GIT_SSH_VARIANT and GIT_CONFIG. …re kept When the worktree has no .gitmodules file, Git reads the one in the index or HEAD. A deinitialized submodule leaves no config key but keeps its repository under the common Git directory's modules folder, and Git can still fetch it on demand. That fetch inherits the injected GIT_SSH_COMMAND, which replaces the submodule's own core.sshCommand. The watch now also stays off when <git common dir>/modules exists. The common directory comes from the cached repository paths, so this adds one stat and no git process. Tests: a new row stages .gitmodules, removes it from the worktree, keeps .git/modules/lib and sets no submodule key; the fetch keeps the command timeout and gets no injected command. The first wait for the fetch to read its stderr now allows 5 seconds of real time, since it also covers the real repository root lookup. The probe-start wait and the join keep 1 second. …ed worktree A linked worktree keeps its submodule repositories under its own Git directory, <git common dir>/worktrees/<id>/modules, not under the common modules folder. A submodule initialized and then deinitialized only in that worktree passed the common check, so Git's on-demand fetch of it inherited the injected GIT_SSH_COMMAND, which replaces the submodule's own core.sshCommand. The watch now reads the worktree's .git file and also stays off when the Git directory it names has a modules folder. A .git directory is the common one, already checked. A failed read or stat turns the watch off. This adds a stat, plus one file read in a linked worktree, and no git process. Tests: a new row fetches in a linked worktree whose own Git directory keeps modules/lib, with no common modules folder, .gitmodules staged but gone from the worktree and no submodule key; the fetch keeps the command timeout and gets no injected command. Problem
Starting a thread with New worktree and Start from origin fetches the selected branch before creating the worktree. When an SSH agent waits for key approval, the fetch stalls and reaches the 30 s
Git command timed out.error.The 1Password SSH agent asks whether to approve the requesting app's use of the key. If locked, it needs Touch ID or the account password to unlock. Its authorization model describes private-key approval, and its background-request documentation explains how a request can wait behind the app icon. OpenSSH blocks in the signing request while the agent waits.
The issue reproduction used an 18-ref, 3.5 MB repository that fetched in about 1.1 s once authorized. Leaving approval unanswered reached the full 30 s timeout.
Change
fetchRemotewatches signing on Git's default OpenSSH transport when a capability probe acceptsLogVerbose. It suppliesGIT_SSH_COMMANDas:ssh -o 'LogVerbose=sshconnect2.c:sign_and_send_pubkey():*,packet.c:ssh_packet_send2_wrapped():*'After a matching packet line has been seen, a
debug3:line containingsign_and_send_pubkeyandsigning usingstarts a 10 s signing window. A subsequentdebug3:line containingssh_packet_send2_wrappedandsend packet:clears it. A later signing request gets a fresh window; unrelated stderr does neither. The queue loop measures from when the signing line was read. If the packet-log format does not match, signing never arms the watch and the command keeps its existing timeout. If no packet follows within the window, the fetch fails with:
The 10 s choice aims to keep failure short in the unattended case the issue describes while allowing approval at the desk; Retry sends a fresh signing request.
LogVerboseobserves the signing wait becauseBatchModeandSSH_ASKPASSdo not reach prompts inside the agent, andConnectTimeoutends before authentication. A plain no-progress timer would false-alarm on the tested 15 s slow-banner case.Interrupting the fetch closes its process scope and terminates git and its ssh child. The authorization error uses fixed text and copies no SSH stderr or key fingerprint. Scoped fetches, all-branch fetches and the existing missing-ref fallback share the watch.
The cached probe runs before the config read, has a 3 s bound, and checks option support without connecting or reading user or system SSH configuration:
ssh -G -F none -o 'LogVerbose=sshconnect2.c:sign_and_send_pubkey():*,packet.c:ssh_packet_send2_wrapped():*' localhostAfter the probe succeeds, the driver uses its cached repository paths to check the worktree root for
.gitmodules, the common Git directory formodulesand, when the worktree's.gitis agitdir:file, that worktree's Git directory formodules. An unresolvable root, including a non-repository or bare repository, disables the watch. If none of these paths exists, the driver reads:git config --get-regexp '^(core\.sshcommand|ssh\.variant|submodule\..+\.(url|active))$'Only exit 1, meaning none of these keys exists, enables the watch. A failed probe, config-read error or any path lookup error disables it. The probe is cached per driver; qualifying fetches each read config, including HTTPS fetches. The command-line
LogVerbosereplaces any configuredLogVerbosefor a watched process. The watch is off on Windows; with
core.sshCommand,ssh.variant,submodule.<name>.urlorsubmodule.<name>.active; with a.gitmodulesfile at the repository worktree root; with<gitCommonDir>/modulespresent; withmodulespresent in the Git directory a linked worktree's.gitfile names; when that root cannot be resolved; and withGIT_SSH_COMMAND,GIT_SSH,GIT_SSH_VARIANTorGIT_CONFIGpresent, including empty values. Clients withoutLogVerbose, including stock OpenSSH before 8.5, also keep today's 30 s timeout. Git passesGIT_SSH_COMMANDto submodule fetches, where it would override their owncore.sshCommand.GIT_CONFIGis excluded becausegit configreads it whilegit fetchignores it.Scope and approval
Closes #11930.
The maintainer triage accepts detecting the signing stall and returning an authorization-specific error, and separates this issue from #10916. #10943 changes the command timeout for #10916. This PR changes neither the command timeout nor callers. If #10943 lands with
timeoutMs: null, this separate window still bounds the signing stall. This carries forward the closed #11946 by @Gigioxx:
LogVerboseon default ssh, signing/packet pairing, custom-command and old-SSH exemptions, and the authorization error approach. It adds the Windows, submodule andGIT_CONFIGgates and replacesStream.debouncewith a queue loop measuring from the signing line. #11946 already had the capability probe; this PR caches it, sets a 3 s bound and moves it before the config read. The tests fake the config read and probe; verification uses real OpenSSH and a macOS confirmation helper.Verification

A successful watched fetch took 0.16 s (0.29 s wall) and wrote 2,014 stderr bytes, about 0.2% of the 1,000,000-byte cap. OpenSSH filters channel data and window adjustments from these packet logs; keepalives and rekeys can add lines. This small-repository measurement gives no upper bound for a large fetch.
