Problem and behavior

On a desktop-launched server, a Browser tab can miss the native webview attachment deadline while its thread is in the background. The server opens a usable headless page, but the desktop later draws its own independent native page for that tab. Agent actions and the user's Browser panel then reach different pages.

Keep the existing headless fallback working and stream that same page in the desktop panel. The server announces its backing page before launching headless. Once headless is selected, late native attachment, detachment, and a failed-launch retry cannot replace it with another page. Headless popups announce their mode in the initial snapshot. Closing during attachment or creation releases the pending page instead of resurrecting the tab.

The optional snapshot field serverPageMode reaches the existing renderer predicate, so the Electron host releases its native guest and both the panel and floating preview use ServerBrowserSurface. Native overlays and late status callbacks cannot override stream controls. Missing mode retains legacy behavior. Mobile already streams server tabs.

Scope and review feedback

Fixes the remaining attachment-timeout path in #16901. Maintainer triage establishes the split-page failure and expected shared page; the mechanism remains subject to maintainer review.

This revision replaces the earlier error-and-retry proposal following the direction question. Julius’ subsequent feedback confirms that preserving and streaming the headless page addresses that direction question; the requested after screenshots and input/floating recordings are linked below. Working headless tabs again count toward the existing tab limits, resolving the capacity finding. No new expiry policy or capacity mechanism is added.

#16620 separately handles environment-wide hydration. This PR does not duplicate it, migrate native sign-in state into headless, or change capture/compositing, CDP context recovery, or browser host routing. An inactive thread's old client cache still needs the authoritative list/event before its renderer can switch.

Verification

Base: ed0f7b908b2e7b3a22e6fd82a73794c2fe6ee06e. The new regression test fails on unchanged base production files with expected undefined to be 'headless', then passes on this revision. It checks that the authoritative backing mode is visible before Chromium launches and that the chosen page survives late native events.

Focused checks, all exit 0:

# apps/server: 67 tests
../../node_modules/.bin/vp test run src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts src/preview/Manager.test.ts

# apps/web: 33 tests
pnpm exec vp test run --project unit src/browser/previewRuntime.test.ts src/browser/HostedBrowserWebview.test.tsx src/browser/desktopTabLifetime.test.ts src/components/preview/usePreviewBridge.test.ts src/components/preview/PreviewView.test.tsx src/components/preview/previewFallback.test.tsx

# root: 27 tests
pnpm exec vp test run packages/contracts/src/preview.test.ts
  • Tests cover timeout, sticky late attachment/detachment, retry, close during wait/launch, popup cleanup, sequential per-agent/server capacity and capacity release, legacy JSON, actual mounted native-to-stream transitions, stale overlay removal, navigation controls, floating preview, and late guest registration after unmount.
  • Targeted format/lint for changed files, typechecks for server/web/contracts, and git diff --check succeeded. Web lint reports three warnings on source expressions/dependency lists already present before this revision; baseline lint was not rerun.
  • Independent source review found a popup close race during development; it was corrected and covered by a gated test. Final review found no remaining introduced blocker.
  • One real-client pass used test-t3-app through T3's own Browser with isolated worktree state. A real Chromium headless page rendered in the panel; keyboard/click input changed its form state, and floating/reopening the stream retained that state. Its received snapshot had runtime: server and serverPageMode: headless.

Visual evidence and limits

Reported before: split-page screenshot, with a working foreground control in #16901.

After, on this revision with a real headless stream in the isolated web client:

  • Initial page state:

Initial streamed page

  • After keyboard/click input and reopening the panel, the field and output retain “Hi”:

Streamed page retains input

  • The floating preview retains the same field and output:

Floating preview retains Hi

Input recording (focus, keyboard entry and Apply):

headless-ui-input.mp4

Floating recording (panel → floating → panel, “Hi” retained):

headless-ui-floating.mp4

The native deadline and renderer transition are covered by controlled service/component tests; the manual pass runs the web client and real stream, not a newly built Electron app. This extracted revision has not been installed into the main app. It does not demonstrate preservation of a formerly native page's sign-in/state after permanent detachment. Concurrent-open capacity limitations are unchanged.

Prepared with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes production behavior across server tab lifecycle, shared preview state, Electron rendering, streaming, and bridge cleanup when native attachment times out. Although the contract addition is backward-compatible and heavily tested, the cross-layer asynchronous behavior change is broader than a small self-contained fix.

#16901 establishes the split-page bug, but its proposed fixes preserve a working page after the timeout. This patch instead makes desktop opens fail until a native page attaches; that issue also reports an intentional headless-browser workflow. Can a maintainer confirm whether error-and-retry is the intended fallback, or whether the headless page should remain usable and be streamed? The scope rule requires that product choice before review handoff.

Server preview sessions now carry an optional native or headless page mode. ServerBrowser uses that mode to select desktop attachment or headless operation. The web preview selects the native surface or server stream based on the session mode.

Changes

Server Preview Page Modes

Page-mode contract and session state
packages/contracts/src/preview.ts, packages/contracts/src/preview.test.ts, apps/server/src/preview/Manager.ts, apps/server/src/preview/Manager.test.ts
Preview snapshots accept an optional serverPageMode value of native or headless. The manager stores the mode for server sessions and emits a resized event when it changes.
Server tab mode selection and lifecycle
apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.ts, apps/server/src/preview/ServerBrowser.test.ts
ServerBrowser publishes the selected mode and skips desktop attachment for headless tabs. Tests cover attachment timing, popup adoption, tab closure, tab limits, and headless operation without a desktop channel.

The web runtime excludes headless server pages from native rendering. Preview tests cover switching to the server stream, stream navigation, native guest cleanup, pop-out behavior, and mini-player handling.
Native preview bridge cleanup
apps/web/src/components/preview/usePreviewBridge.ts, apps/web/src/components/preview/usePreviewBridge.test.ts
The bridge clears desktop preview state and ignores native updates while the tab is headless. Tests cover mode changes, late events, and unmount cleanup.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 19306

On an attachment timeout, desktop-launched previews open a separate headless page instead of retrying on the signed-in native page, which the PR description says should not happen. Confirm the intended fallback and align the code, tests and description before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 19306

The reviewed change coordinates which page users and agents see without demonstrating broader access or weaker authorization. However, timeout permanently selects a headless page rather than preserving native attachment for retry as described. That recovery choice needs clarification, and desktop transition behavior remains incompletely verified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · observed: The reviewed recovery contract differs materially from the stated design: attachment timeout publishes terminal headless mode and creates a headless page, rather than retaining pending native attachment and returning a retryable error. Later attachment cannot restore native backing for that session. Headless fallback predates this PR, and coordinating clients around it reduces split-page behavior, but this is a different page-ownership and signed-in-state recovery choice.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The changed authority concerns browser pages within the selected environment, identified by thread and tab, and their associated profile or isolated context. Native hosting remains restricted to Electron and the primary environment; the new mode excludes headless sessions rather than granting native access to another environment.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public open schema cannot directly select page mode. Stream viewing still requires orchestration-read scope, interaction separately requires preview-operate scope, native hosting requires preview-operate scope, and automation mutations retain the agent ownership check. These controls were not weakened by the inspected comparison.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Pending creation now rechecks authoritative session state and disposes allocated resources after closure. Already-registered tab lookup still returns the local tab without that recheck, while close cleanup is event-driven; this window predates the PR and is not evidence of a newly introduced authorization bypass.

Keep the attachment error domain-specific until transport translation.

desktopRenders creates this error, while handleRequest serializes it and PreviewAutomationBroker maps it to PreviewAutomationExecutionError. Define ServerBrowserDesktopAttachError as a typed domain error with its own discriminator. Let the broker produce the transport error.

Preserving and streaming the headless page addresses the earlier direction question. The PR says the after screenshots and interaction recording are still local. I'm moving this to draft until those are attached or linked, as required by the verification rule. Show the shared page and its input/floating behavior, then mark it ready for review.
