Remote editor links dropped the environment’s SSH login user, so the local editor could try the viewing machine’s account and fail authentication.

Carry the optional login through configured SSH targets, advertised Tailscale/mDNS targets, and the shared picker into VS Code-compatible, Zed, and JetBrains links. Bare aliases still use SSH config. Empty saved usernames fall back to an inline user@host login, and username-only edits refresh cached destinations. Username discovery failure retains hostname-only targets.

Maintainer takeover of #18092, retaining @jakeleventhal’s commits and merging current main. Consolidated the relevant tests from 53 cases in five files to 47 cases in four existing files; removed duplicate resolver checks, props/callback wiring coverage, and the one-off OS helper suite. The discovery suite now covers OS lookup failure.

Verification at 7747c9ab31547b8e2c033dfa848db224fb85c4f5:

  • 40 focused nonbrowser tests and 7 existing picker Chromium tests pass. Fail-before checks exposed lost usernames, rejected Zed login links, OS lookup failure, and the two blank-login cases.
  • Scoped typechecks pass for contracts, shared, web, server, and desktop. Targeted lint, formatting, and git diff --check pass.
  • The running isolated web app’s real React hook and production URL builder were checked in the T3 Browser panel with synthetic connection data. Same-host login change, removal, and addition update all three URL formats. Behavior proof.

This changes generated destinations without a visual layout change. External editor launch and SSH authentication were not exercised. Native macOS, Windows, Electron, iOS, and Android were not verified on this headless Linux host; mobile has no matching local editor picker. A read-only real-data snapshot could not migrate because this machine’s live build has a different migration history; browser fixtures stayed isolated and synthetic.

Both independent round-1 full-diff reviews found no blockers. Advertised targets use the server process’s OS account; service-account deployments should verify that account is also their intended SSH login.

Fixes #14102.

Human review remains required for the SSH account behavior. Unmerged.

Tests: GPT-6 Astra (high). Implementation: GPT-6.1 Sol (high). Reviews: GPT-6 Sol (high) and Claude Opus 5.5 (high). Harness: Codex through T3 Code; Claude through T3 delegation.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This is a narrowly scoped fix that carries SSH usernames through existing remote-editor URL paths and preserves host-only compatibility. Human review is required because the PR adds a static-analysis diagnostic suppression in a server test file.

📝 Walkthrough

The change carries SSH usernames through remote target data and editor-link construction. It adds local username lookup and target advertisement, updates SSH target resolution, and includes usernames in supported editor URLs. Electron accepts Zed SSH URLs with a login username.

Changes: SSH username propagation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remote target and editor URL contract
packages/contracts/src/editor.ts
The remote target schema accepts an optional username. Editor URL construction includes it in JetBrains, Zed, and VS Code-style links when provided.
Username lookup and target advertisement
packages/shared/src/HostProcess.ts, packages/shared/src/HostProcess.test.ts, apps/server/src/environment/RemoteOpenTargets.ts, apps/server/src/environment/RemoteOpenTargets.test.ts
HostProcess.Username returns a trimmed OS username or null. Tailscale and mDNS targets include that username when available.
Resolve SSH targets and build remote links
apps/web/src/remoteOpen.ts, apps/web/src/remoteOpen.test.ts
The resolver accepts a configured SSH alias and username. It uses the configured username or an alias username prefix, and retains usernames from advertised targets.
Pass usernames to editor launch targets
apps/web/src/components/chat/OpenInPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/OpenInPicker.test.tsx, apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronShell.ts, apps/desktop/src/electron/ElectronShell.test.ts
The picker passes the host username into URL construction. Electron accepts Zed SSH paths with a login username and continues to reject passwords and ports.

Explanation

Issue #14102 requires the configured SSH user in the VS Code Remote-SSH link. resolveRemoteOpenState carries the configured SSH username and splits user@host targets. buildRemoteOpenUrl adds the username to the VS Code destination. OpenInPicker passes this value to the generated link. The reported tests cover username-bearing URLs, picker actions, aliases, and fallback cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The additional changes support the same remote editor username behavior. They carry the optional username through contracts, server-advertised Tailscale and mDNS targets, shared editor URL builders, and Electron URL validation. The focused tests cover these paths. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

🟡 Minor · Treat an empty persisted username as absent. · remoteOpen.ts:103-108

apps/web/src/remoteOpen.ts:103-108
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat an empty persisted username as absent.

The SSH form converts blank input to null, but the persisted schema accepts "" and migration copies it unchanged. For such a saved or migrated target, resolveRemoteOpenState preserves the empty value instead of falling back to the username in a user@host alias. The editor URL then contains @host or u=, which breaks the link.

Suggested fix
- const username =
-    input.sshTarget.username ?? (userSeparator === -1 ? null : alias.slice(0, userSeparator));
+ const username =
+    input.sshTarget.username || (userSeparator === -1 ? null : alias.slice(0, userSeparator));

Update username resolution in resolveRemoteOpenState so an empty persisted SSH
username is treated as absent and falls back to the username in a user@host
alias; preserve the existing null and non-empty username behavior.

Taking over this one as maintainer for batch ssh-relay-remote-11. I will retain this PR and its author commits, integrate current main, reduce the tests to focused behavior coverage, and run independent implementation and review passes. It will remain unmerged.
