ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR substantially changes production timeline lifecycle and scrolling behavior, including thread-entry positioning, live-follow cancellation, virtualization, and search/citation readiness. Its extensive tests are valuable, but the broad refactor and changed default entry behavior require human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |
Keeps this branch's design: threads open at the end and the saved reading-position code stays removed, with per-thread disclosure state kept. Resolved against pingdotgg#17348, which extended that position code: - Dropped rememberTimelinePosition's liveFollowEnabled argument, the paintOnly prop (its only use was guarding position writes), the effect that saved a position when live follow turned off, and the three MessagesTimeline tests that asserted remembered positions. - Kept upstream's minimap wheel forwarding and the footer condition that keeps the list mounted for a status line.

Merged main. This keeps the PR's behavior (threads open at the end, no saved reading position). That removed #17348's follow-after-Settings effect and the three timeline tests that asserted remembered positions; details are in the merge commit message. |

so a later change cannot apply a stale entry scroll.

Returning to a thread now lands on the newest message and keeps the pane visible: 11 blank samples before, 0 of 214 after, in the recorded transition.
Problem
Returning to a thread can leave the viewport above the newest message. Remounting LegendList to force bottom-on-entry also leaves the pane blank while the next list measures its rows.
Thread entry should reach the latest message while keeping visible content during loading. Scrolling up within an open thread should preserve the reading position. Search and citation navigation should keep their explicit targets.
Before and after in dark Iris at 1280 × 800. Scroll up in A, switch to B, then return to A. The before recording uses the previous PR revision; the after recording keeps the same viewport mounted.

The synthetic threads have variable-height messages. DOM sampling on animation frames found 11 empty samples before and zero across 214 samples after. This verifies these transitions; it is not a frame-rate or CPU benchmark. The after capture scrolls directly without a wheel, keyboard or pointer event. Idle tails differ.
Change
Keep one LegendList viewport mounted across nonempty thread switches. Retain the outgoing thread while the requested thread loads within the same environment. Use native scrolling to the content end when the incoming thread becomes ready and
initialScrollAtEndfor the first mount.Keep end following active while variable-height rows finish measuring. Wheel, touch, keyboard, scrollbar, selection, focus, search and citation navigation can stop following. A capture-phase scroll listener also stops following when the viewport moves upward without an input gesture, before LegendList can schedule end maintenance. A layout clamp alone does not trigger that fallback. Manual movement beyond the clamp stops following even when content shrinks or the viewport changes. LegendList's own position corrections are recognized by its public managed offset. New-turn anchoring is excluded. Remove root reading-position restoration and its custom measurement loop. Preserve disclosure expansion and work-log state separately for each thread.
Reset following when the requested thread becomes ready, so reading the outgoing thread during loading does not strand the incoming one. Cancel queued scroll requests and clear active native targets when the reader interrupts outside native measurement settling.
Share list readiness between search and citation navigation. Preserve readiness when the existing list changes threads; reset it when an empty pane actually removes the list.
Selecting text stops end following. A short cancellation window in older index-based scroll paths during native measurement settling remains inferred and unverified. The thread-entry path uses a plain offset.
Native mobile is unchanged. Packaged desktop and native mobile were not run.
Scope
Replaces #14212 with the bottom-on-entry requirement. References #5903 and #12372, which remain open for triage; this does not claim to resolve their other causes. Maintainer triage of #12372 confirms a viewport-stranding failure.
Related #15859 changes recovery-button and send-time anchor behavior; this PR addresses thread entry. #14916 preserves saved reading positions while fixing stale follow intent. This PR opens ordinary thread entries at the end.
Replaces #16930, which was closed because its body did not name the model and harness. The code is unchanged; they are stated at the end.
