Problem

Storage cleanup keeps every worktree in a project with "Default branch is unavailable" when the project's remote has no refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD. That ref is only created by git clone or git remote set-head, so any repository whose remote was added with git remote add is affected. The unchanged and merged rules never run for that project, and only the inactivity rule can remove anything. Reported in #17807.

cleanWorktrees stopped as soon as resolveDefaultBranchName returned null, which it does whenever git symbolic-ref refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD exits non-zero.

Change

When the remote HEAD ref is missing, cleanup now probes main then master on the primary remote with the existing remoteBranchExists before giving up. The fetch that follows still has to succeed, so a stale local tracking ref cannot lead to a removal.

The fallback lives in cleanup, not in resolveDefaultBranchName. The resolver's other callers each apply their own policy when it returns null (statusDetails, resolveBaseBranchForNoUpstream, branchPullRequest, GitManager), so changing it centrally would alter their behaviour.

A remote with neither branch is still kept with "Default branch is unavailable".

Scope and approval

Submitted under the "very small, focused fix for an obvious bug" exception. #17807 is my own report and has not been triaged. The defect is one early return that skips two documented cleanup rules for a common repository state, and the fix is eight lines that reuse an existing driver method and the same main/master fallback the other callers already use. It changes no defaults, settings or contracts.

Left out on purpose: resolving the remote and default branch once per repository per sweep, rewording the kept reason, and fork/upstream remote selection (#14843, #17314).

Verification

Established the git state in a throwaway repository (git 2.43.0, Linux) with the steps from #17807: bare remote, git remote add, push.

$ git symbolic-ref refs/remotes/origin/HEAD
fatal: ref refs/remotes/origin/HEAD is not a symbolic ref (exit 128)
$ git show-ref --verify --quiet refs/remotes/origin/main      (exit 0)
$ git show-ref --verify --quiet refs/remotes/origin/master    (exit 1)

The new test in apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts builds that same state with real repositories and a real worktree, asserts origin/HEAD is missing, and runs cleanup with only the unchanged rule on:

Remote branch Outcome Reason
main removed No commits beyond the default branch
master removed No commits beyond the default branch
trunk kept Default branch is unavailable
  • vp test run apps/server/src/storageCleanup.test.ts: 57 passed.
  • Same command with the storageCleanup.ts change reverted: the main and master cases fail with outcome: "kept", reason: "Default branch is unavailable"; the other 55 pass.
  • vp lint and vp fmt --check on both files: clean.
  • vp run --filter t3 typecheck: exit 0.

Not checked: I did not run a server against a real project in this state, and the merged-pull-request rule was not exercised with the fallback branch because it needs a live host lookup. It receives the same resolved branch as the unchanged rule.

Fixes #17807

Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

… has no HEAD ref

A remote added with `git remote add` has no refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD, so
cleanup kept every worktree in the project with "Default branch is
unavailable" and the unchanged and merged rules never ran. Probe main then
master on the primary remote before giving up, as the other callers of
resolveDefaultBranchName already do.

Approvability

Verdict: Not approved

Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The PR is a small, well-scoped cleanup fix with live coverage for missing remote HEAD refs. An unresolved correctness concern remains for remotes with no local tracking refs, where the fallback still cannot resolve the branch, so the runtime scope should receive human review.

Notes:

  • Diff unchanged. Approvability was decided on eligibility alone.

The change enables cleanup in additional repository states while retaining branch, activity, and local-file safeguards. No introduced security flaw was established, but concurrent startup and failure recovery were not fully verified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The expanded effect can apply to multiple eligible managed worktrees associated with a project's repository, not only the regression-test checkout. Remote branch content influences cleanup eligibility, but removal remains constrained by configured cleanup policy and local ownership checks.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new lookup uses fixed conventional branch names on the already selected primary remote. Their existence does not prove they are the remote's actual default branch. However, a stale local tracking ref alone cannot authorize removal: the chosen branch is fetched before commit comparison, and fetch failure exits through per-worktree failure handling.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing tracked-changes policy permits cleaning untracked and ignored files before worktree removal. The fallback makes that policy reachable in additional repository states but does not change it. These operations are sequential, and failure handling reports an error rather than undoing earlier file deletion.

Delete the pushed tracking ref before cleanup.

git push origin main:${branch} creates refs/remotes/origin/${branch}. The main and master cases therefore already satisfy remoteBranchExists, so they do not cover a remote branch with no local tracking ref. Delete that ref after the push so the test detects probing before the first fetch.

Not applying this one. The test reproduces the state from #17807 as reported: git remote add followed by a push. git push does update refs/remotes/origin/<branch> locally (the main and master cases would otherwise fail, and they fail with outcome: "kept" once the storageCleanup.ts change is reverted), so the fallback is exercised against real git state.

Deleting the ref after the push would test a different situation, a remote that has never been fetched or pushed to, which is the behaviour discussed in the other thread and is outside this PR.

official Git documentation git push remote-tracking branches updated by push or fetch

💡 Result:

**Remote-tracking branches are normally updated by `git fetch`, not `git push`.** The official `git-fetch` documentation says fetch updates remote-tracking branches; by default, `git fetch origin` maps remote branches into local `refs/remotes/origin/*`. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-fetch.html?utm_source=openai))

`git push` updates refs **on the destination remote**. It does not normally update your local remote-tracking refs, so after pushing, those refs may remain stale until you fetch. This distinction follows from the official docs’ descriptions of fetch and push. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-push?utm_source=openai))

The exact refs updated by fetch depend on its refspec and configuration; explicit refspecs can change where fetched refs are stored. ([git-scm.com](https://git-scm.com/docs/git-fetch?utm_source=openai))

Fetch remote-tracking refs before probing fallback branches.

When a primary remote was added without a fetch, remoteBranchExists checks only local refs/remotes/<remote>/<branch> refs. The fallback runs before fetchRemoteTrackingBranch, so it can find neither main nor master and keep the worktree as “Default branch is unavailable” even when the remote has one of those branches.

The observation is accurate: remoteBranchExists reads local refs/remotes/<remote>/<branch>, so a remote that was added and has never been fetched from or pushed to still ends in "Default branch is unavailable". I'm leaving that as it is in this PR, for three reasons.

  • It is not the reported defect. [Bug]: Storage cleanup keeps every worktree in a project when origin/HEAD is unset ("Default branch is unavailable") #17807 is a remote whose tracking branches exist locally and only refs/remotes/<remote>/HEAD is missing, which is what git remote add plus a push or fetch leaves behind.
  • The remaining case fails safe. The worktree is kept, nothing is removed, and this is the same outcome as before the change.
  • Fetching before the probe is a larger change than this fix. It means network fetches for branch names that may not exist, with their own failure handling, and it differs from the other main/master fallbacks in GitVcsDriverCore.ts, which also read local refs only.

If maintainers want cleanup to discover the default branch over the network, that fits better with resolving the remote once per repository per sweep, which #17807 lists as a follow-up.
