ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained server bug fix that adds exit-code and signal context to existing browser-startup errors while leaving successful rendering and existing setup diagnostics unchanged. Focused tests cover both failure modes, and the PR does not alter defaults, static-analysis configuration, or sensitive infrastructure. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

- Line 351: Update the `EXIT_SIGNAL` match handling so `signal` is set only when
the cause matches; otherwise leave it unset, preserving the generic message
without a `(signal unknown)` suffix.

Problem
When T3's preview browser exits before it renders,
html_previewfails with only "Headless Chrome could not render the page: the browser exited unexpectedly." T3 already has the reason. The child handle has the exit status, andlaunchBrowserkeeps Chrome's stderr tail inHtmlRenderBrowserError.output, but it only uses that text for the sandbox and missing-library checks. Any other startup failure leaves the agent and the user with nothing to act on: a crash, an OOM kill, a loader error thatldddoesn't flag, a damaged download. We ran into this while reproducing #16794. We made Chrome fail at startup in ways the setup checks don't recognise, once with a wrapper that starts it late and once with one that SIGKILLs it as the OOM killer would. Each time the agent got only the generic sentence, although Chrome had printed the loader's error and the exit status was known.
Change
disconnectinheadlessChrome.tsnow reads the child's exit status. It waits at most a second, because the pipe can close just before the exit is reaped.HtmlRenderBrowserErrorgetsexitCodeandsignalattributes, and its message names whichever is set:Chrome's stderr stays out of the message, per the error conventions (no command output in attributes); it is still kept in
output. When neither is known, the text stays as it was.outputis unchanged, sodiagnoseLaunchFailurestill turns sandbox and missing-library failures into their setup errors. Nothing changes on paths where the browser doesn't exit (normal renders, timeouts, scope teardown). Effect's spawner names a terminating signal only in its error message, so the signal is read from there, and left out when it can't be read.Scope and approval
This is a very small, focused fix for an obvious bug, so I believe it qualifies without a prior issue. T3 already collects the exit status and Chrome's output, then drops them before the agent sees the error. The change is one function in
headlessChrome.tsplus tests, with no contract or client change. It has the same shape as #16146, where Cursor's reason was dropped before the user saw it.Related, not changed here:
main.t3 browser setupcan't install them #16871: on NixOS theldd-based library check reports libraries that nix-ld provides.Verification
Focused tests in
HtmlRender.test.ts(POSIX only, skipped on Windows). A stand-in browser reads T3's first command off fd 3, then either:… (exit code 3).with neither line in the message, or… (signal SIGKILL).Both fail against
main(Received: "Headless Chrome could not render the page: the browser exited unexpectedly."). Eight repeated runs showed no flakes.5a1a6a6 (Macroscope review): stderr no longer goes into the message; the exit code or signal are their own attributes. Focused tests (27, plus 4 real-browser tests skipped without
T3CODE_TEST_HEADLESS_SHELL), lint, fmt and typecheck pass.Rebased onto
main@ 5fe9d02 on 2026-10-10 (the test'shostProcessimport moved to theHostProcessnamespace); the focused tests pass (27, plus the 4 real-browser tests skipped withoutT3CODE_TEST_HEADLESS_SHELL), lint, fmt and typecheck pass.Live, in a NixOS VM: agent threads calling
html_previewagainst nightly0.0.46-nightly.20261007.2761, rebuilt from its tag withbuild-exe --target linux-x64. Both builds carry #16555's patch, so the crash doesn't hide the result:…the browser exited unexpectedly.…the browser exited unexpectedly (exit code 127): …/chrome-headless-shell.real: error while loading shared libraries: libglib-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory.…the browser exited unexpectedly (signal SIGKILL).lddflags them)This host is missing libraries T3's browser needs (…)html_renderheights at 9 widthsIn every run the server kept the same process and restart count, and a thread running a long shell command at the same time finished normally.
Not checked: Windows and macOS. The new tests skip Windows. macOS goes through the same spawner path, but I didn't run it there.
