Show the annotation overlay as a manual top-layer popover inside the active native modal so its editor can receive input. Move it when dialogs change and disconnect the observer when the annotation session ends.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped fix to keep the existing annotation UI interactive over native modal dialogs, with lifecycle cleanup and dialog-change handling contained in the preview preload. It does not alter product defaults, schemas, deployment behavior, or static-analysis configuration. No code changes detected at You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Taking over this one for batch terminal-preview-03. I will update the original branch, resolve the conflict with main, and verify the annotation flow against native modal dialogs. |

Dismissing prior approval to re-evaluate fefb60a

The takeover is published at fefb60a. The earlier ordering concern is addressed: modal changes resynchronize placement, reparenting hides the popover, and the following show call raises it. Linux Chromium proof covers a modal opening during annotation, nesting, closing, removal/reinsertion, and pointer-transparent backdrops. The before/after captures and recording are in the body. Three independent full-diff review rounds ended clean; native Electron IPC through the composer still needs a human check. The docstring-coverage suggestion does not identify a behavior defect. The overlay lifecycle is expressed by the existing code, and AGENTS.md asks us to avoid comments that merely narrate it; no extra docstrings were added. The previous configured review stopped at its usage limit. Please review the published head now that its reported wait has elapsed. @coderabbitai review |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Find modal dialogs inside shadow roots.
If a page opens a native <dialog> inside a shadow root, document.activeElement and document.elementFromPoint() expose the shadow host, not the dialog. Both closest("dialog:modal") checks then miss it. The host stays outside the modal, so its controls remain inert. The document-level observer also misses open changes confined to that shadow root. Traverse accessible shadow roots for modal detection and observe their dialog changes. (developer.mozilla.org)

Native HTML modal dialogs make the rest of the page inert, so browser annotation controls could appear behind the backdrop and could not accept input. Keep the annotation overlay in the browser top layer and inside the active modal. Follow modal changes and restore the overlay after a dialog is removed and reinserted; disconnect observation on cancellation or capture.
Based on @GrannoDev's work in #16031. Preserved the original commits, merged current main, and retained the existing direction and resize handling.
Verification at fefb60a:
showModal(); head accepts keyboard input and emitspreview:element-pickedwith comment, selector, crop and attach submission. Verified global backdrop/dialog CSS isolation, nested/opened/closed/removed dialogs, pointer-transparent backdrops, same-task removal/reinsertion, cancellation and capture cleanup, and toolbar clicks with coordinate-based backdrop dismissal installed. Before — actual main preload; annotation field is behind the native modal:
After — current head; editor is interactive above the modal:
Keyboard entry and attach recording.
