fix(web): reopening Connections picks up new network addresses - #15840
lnieuwenhuis wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
Move keepAlive from the SWR wrapper to the source atom so the wrapper remounts when Connections reopens and revalidates a stale snapshot, while the previous snapshot still renders immediately. Fixes pingdotgg#15751.
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused bug fix that refreshes stale Connections data after network changes while preserving cached snapshots and normal cache limits. Production changes are small and covered by targeted tests, with no default, schema, infrastructure, or static-analysis suppression changes. Notes:

54-95: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAssert that remount publishes the refreshed endpoint list.
Both mocks return the same fixtures on every call. The snapshot assertion runs immediately after remount, and the later wait checks only loader call counts. The test can pass without checking whether refreshed endpoint addresses reach the observable snapshot. Return a different endpoint list on the second load and assert that
registry.get(atom)exposes it.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Addressed CodeRabbit's nitpick in 4fb6931: the second endpoint read now returns a new Tailscale endpoint and the test asserts it reaches the snapshot. It fails against the old atom composition and passes with this change. |

…ects The 60 s tailscale status cache kept serving a status read before Tailscale connected, so a refreshed endpoint list showed the new Tailscale IP but not the Tailscale HTTPS endpoint. Invalidate the cache when the host's Tailscale interface addresses change; steady state still spawns the CLI at most once per TTL.

Fixes #15751
Settings → Connections kept the endpoint list it loaded first. An address that appeared later (for example Tailscale connecting after the app started) never showed up until the renderer reloaded. Tracing the scenario end to end turned up two causes, one in the renderer and one in the desktop main process.
Renderer.
createDesktopNetworkAccessStateAtomputAtom.keepAliveon theAtom.swrwrapper. SWR only checksstaleTimewhen the wrapper is built, and keeping the wrapper alive meant it was never rebuilt, sorevalidateOnMountonly applied to the first load in a session.keepAlivenow sits on the source atom instead. Leaving Connections releases the wrapper (it is the atom's only consumer, and the route really unmounts) but keeps the loaded snapshot. Reopening shows that snapshot straight away, with no loading flash, and refreshes it in the background once it is older than 30 s. A reopen within 30 s doesn't refetch, andrefreshDesktopNetworkAccessState()still reaches the source.Desktop. Interface addresses are re-read on every call, so the Tailscale IP endpoint was fresh once the renderer asked again. The MagicDNS name for the Tailscale HTTPS endpoint, however, comes from
tailscale status, cached for 60 s so macOS doesn't keep re-showing its "Other apps" permission prompt (#2745). A status read taken before Tailscale connected stayed cached, so reopening showed the Tailscale IP but no Tailscale HTTPS endpoint or Serve toggle. The cache is now invalidated when the host's Tailscale IPv4 addresses change (Tailscale connecting or disconnecting). In steady state the CLI still runs at most once per TTL.Before / after
Reproduced in a real browser against
vp run devwith a stubbedwindow.desktopBridge. The stub'sgetAdvertisedEndpointsreturns only the LAN endpoint at first. Then "Tailscale connects" (it starts returning a Tailscale IP endpoint too), I leave Connections, wait 31 s, reopen and expand the endpoint list. The stub only exercises the renderer half. The desktop cache fix is covered by the desktop test below.
Verification
apps/web/src/state/desktopNetworkAccess.test.ts(6 passed):The stale-remount cases fail on the old atom composition.
apps/desktop/src/backend/DesktopServerExposure.test.ts(11 passed): a new test where Tailscale comes up between two reads within the cache TTL now gets the Tailscale HTTPS endpoint, and failed before the fix. The existing local-only test (never runs the CLI) still passes.Known gaps, out of scope: LAN endpoints are still fixed at launch, so a LAN IP change mid-session stays stale. An address appearing while the page stays open needs a reopen; live interface watching would be a separate change.
