…ou pick an age The retention switch saved 8 days the moment it was turned on, and the days field only appeared afterwards. Every cleanup settings change queues a sweep, so a rule meant to be 30 days could delete worktrees, browser captures or rotated logs under an 8-day rule nobody chose. Turning the switch on now opens a local draft of 8 with the field focused and saves nothing. Enter, a typed age or a stepper saves the age on screen; leaving the control without committing, Escape or switching back off cancels with no write. Text the number field cannot parse never saves. Turning a rule off still saves immediately. The committed age stays visible until the saved value arrives. The settings update now resolves whether its writes succeeded so a failed save does not leave the switch on, and each draft has its own identity so a late callback from a cancelled or unmounted draft cannot save. ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR changes when retention cleanup becomes persisted and active for worktrees, browser artifacts, and logs, while adding substantial focus, draft, asynchronous-save, and stale-callback handling. The scope and tests are strong, but the cleanup side effects and new state machine merit human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

…the draft alone When some of the selected environments saved a retention age and others failed, the control treated it as a failed save and fell back to the representative value, which could read "Off" while cleanup was active elsewhere. The settings update now resolves whether anything was saved, so the control falls back only when nothing was. Enter and Escape pressed to finish an IME composition no longer commit or cancel the draft.

Base UI can call the stable
onValueCommittedcallback when a held stepper is released. After the external update rerenders this component, the callback uses acommit()closure withsession === null, so clearingopenRefalone does not trigger the existing guard. Reject a sessionless stepper commit when its value no longer matches the current draft.🐛 Suggested fix

Note 🤖 Claude Fable 5.1 on behalf of Mnigos Re the outside-diff comment in this review ("Invalidate stale stepper commits after an external value update", Once an external saved value arrives there is no draft session any more, so a held stepper released afterwards goes through the ordinary enabled-rule path, which this PR leaves as it is on The draft-specific stale callbacks (a hold released after Escape, after switching off, or after the control unmounted) are closed by the per-draft token and covered by tests. |
Fixes #14743.
Problem
In Settings → Storage, turning a retention rule on (inactive worktrees, browser artifacts, rotated logs) saved 8 days the moment the switch flipped, and the days field only appeared afterwards. Every cleanup-settings change queues a sweep, so someone who meant to set 30 days first activated an 8-day rule they never chose, which could delete worktrees, captures or logs that the intended rule would have kept.
Change
RetentionControlnow opens a local draft when the switch is turned on and saves nothing until an age is committed:+) never saves anything; in particular it never falls back to a number that is no longer on screen. After an age is committed the control keeps showing it until the saved value comes back from the server, so it does not flash "Off" in between. Each draft has its own identity, so a late callback from a draft that was cancelled, replaced or unmounted (a stepper held with the mouse and released afterwards) cannot save.
One step outside the component:
useRunScopedPlaninuseScopedSettings.tsnow resolves whether anything was saved. The control needs that to stop showing a rule as on when its save failed ("Setting not saved"); without it the switch would stay on with nothing saved. When only some of the selected environments saved, the rule keeps showing on, next to the row's "Mixed across selected machines" status, because cleanup is then active somewhere. The existing callers ignore the result and behave as before.Scope and approval
Triaged bug: #14743, following the "Likely fix" in the triage comment: keep the fix in
RetentionControl, show a local draft of 8, do not callonChangeuntil an age you can see is committed, keep off-switching immediate, and leave the rule off when leaving without committing. No storage reporting and no Save/Discard flow. Web only; desktop renders the same code and there is no mobile retention control.Verification

"Delete old browser artifacts" was checked the same way as the first row and behaves identically.
The recordings were taken before three small later changes, none of which alters a recorded scenario: the control closes its draft when it unmounts, a partial save keeps the rule on, and IME composition keys are ignored. Those paths are covered by unit tests, not by the recordings.
Tests.
StorageSettings.test.tsxdrives the real panel in a DOM with pointer, keyboard and focus events and asserts what is shown and exactly which writes happen: enabling saves nothing on all three rules; Enter, typed ages, steppers, leaving, Escape (from the field and from the switch), switching off while drafting, unparseable text, a save that fails, a partial save, a save whose value arrives late, clearing the field while saving, composing Enter and Escape, a held stepper released after the draft was cancelled or the control unmounted, and an already-enabled rule. Againstmain'sStorageSettings.tsxall but the two already-enabled-rule tests fail. Web typecheck, targeted lint, format and knip are clean. Not checked: Safari and touch input. The cancel-on-leave rule relies on the browser moving focus to the stepper buttons when they are pressed, which Chromium and Firefox do; Safari does not focus buttons on click, so a stepper tap on an untouched draft there may cancel the draft instead of stepping it. A failed save was exercised in tests only, not against a real failing server.
