Summary

Large archives are hard to scan as a flat list, and restoring or deleting related threads one at a time is tedious. Archive groups threads by project on web, desktop, and mobile, with search, archived/created sorting, and actions for individual threads or the matching threads in a project.

Archive loads all configured environments, including those with no active projects. Scoped Settings narrow the results, failed loads remain visible with a retry action, and overlapping mutations and partial failures receive explicit feedback.

Interactive demo

What changed

  • Add collapsed project groups, saved project icons and environment labels, ranked multi-term search, and archived/created age columns. Web reveals row actions on hover or keyboard focus; mobile uses swipe and long-press actions.
  • Keep the web archive search available to Settings search in loading, empty, and populated states. Native archive controls support environment filtering, sorting, and refresh within the existing Settings frame without remounting the list during search.
  • Scope project restore/delete actions to visible search matches, with confirmations, per-thread reservations, bounded concurrency, and partial-outcome reporting. On web, restoring an archived thread invalidates its Archive Undo; deleting it releases composer uploads and draft state.
  • Reject a stale restore after another client deletes the archived thread, so the action reports failure instead of success. Preserve valid restores and replay of previously accepted command receipts.
  • Document how to archive, restore, and permanently delete threads across clients, including the distinction between archived and settled threads. Describe permanent removal without promising erasure of retained conversation data.

Validation

129 focused tests and four package typechecks passed
  • All 129 focused tests passed: 101 web/shared/server tests and 28 mobile tests covering archive behavior, native thread actions, composer draft cleanup, context menus, and server restore/delete handling.
  • Web, mobile, client-runtime, and server typechecks passed.
  • Changed-file lint passed with warnings. The whitespace check passed.
  • Integrated web and native iOS checks passed against the current commit with isolated fixtures. Both clients covered collapsed project groups, multi-term search and exact-phrase ranking, search-driven expansion, Created sorting, and matching-only project action labels. Web Settings search focused the Archive input; iOS exercised row menus and partial environment failure handling.
  • Android preparation did not complete because its dependency helper could not resolve the mobile Expo package. Native verification used iOS.

Proof

Web and iOS captures from the current commit. A before screenshot is not available.

The iOS capture shows successfully loaded project groups alongside the retryable failure for another configured environment.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 17cf7

Overlapping archive actions are blocked, and the web sorting behavior matches its documented controls. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 17cf7

Bulk archive actions increase the consequences of a mistaken operation, but the inspected flows preserve scoped targets, overlap protection, and explicit partial outcomes. Restoration now rejects deleted threads. No introduced security flaw was demonstrated; authorization enforcement and mixed-version recovery were not fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected mobile archive can aggregate configured environments, but project mutations remain an explicit set of environment/thread targets. Bulk deletion increases the number of conversations affected by one user action without demonstrating authority over additional environments.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Reservations use a serialized environment/thread pair and synchronously reject overlapping keys. They coordinate local actions rather than provide authorization or a distributed lock; the server separately rejects restoration of a deleted archived thread.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The inspected server engine processes commands through one queue worker. Event append, projection changes, and accepted receipt persistence share a transaction. Receipt replay checks aggregate identity and returns the prior sequence, supporting deletion ordering without another restoration event.
  • observed — Attachment cleanup occurs after the server transaction commits, and dispatch failure reconciliation reads persisted events. Thus committed state and cleanup completion are distinct stages; complete crash recovery and eventual physical attachment removal were not established by this inspection.

Extract the platform-neutral archive helpers, but keep grouping local.

The search parsing/scoring, timestamp conversion, sort-state transition, thread comparison, and action-lock key/acquire/release logic are materially duplicated between web and mobile. Both apps already depend on @t3tools/shared, which exposes shared search-ranking utilities. Move these pure helpers into a dedicated shared module and adapt the small client-specific input types.

Do not move buildArchivedThreadGroups as part of this extraction. The group-order difference comes from separate grouping logic: web iterates projectsByEnvironmentAndId, while mobile iterates each snapshot's projects. The duplicated comparison and scoring helpers do not cause that unsorted group-order difference.

Addressed the helper-duplication nitpick in review #5260136673 with 067c27ee: web and mobile now share archive search ranking, timestamps, sort state and action locks in client-runtime, while platform grouping and action concurrency stay local. 4dd2f434 corrects repeated-term ranking to count distinct matches and adds regression coverage. The focused checks and real web/Android search passes succeeded; the PR validation section and proof links have been updated.

For the server-side verification request, I checked authorization and repeated/concurrent delete and restore behavior in this branch.

Each mutation uses the selected environment's authenticated connection. dispatchCommand requires operate scope, enforced per request, and the decider resolves the thread against that server's read model. Permissions are environment-wide; there is no separate per-thread ACL.

The engine processes commands through one worker. Reusing a command ID replays its recorded receipt, including an accepted restore receipt after a later deletion. A fresh restore request for an already-restored thread fails. A fresh repeated delete can emit another deletion event, so this is not an exactly-once guarantee across different command IDs.

Verification found one incorrect outcome: a fresh restore after deletion previously succeeded while leaving the thread deleted. d44a0ee now rejects that restore before emitting an unarchive event. If restore lands first, a later delete still succeeds. Existing client failure reporting handles the rejection.

All 35 tests in the affected decider and engine files passed, including both serialized orders and accepted-receipt replay. Targeted lint, server typecheck, formatting, and whitespace checks passed. a8753e8 records the safeguard in the branch customization notes.

@coderabbitai I checked the cleanup owners requested in the updated security review.

Thread deletion marks the server record deleted and removes it from normal thread views. It retains conversation rows, orchestration events, and checkpoint refs. The projection pipeline schedules removal of committed thread attachment files; ThreadDeletionReactor stops the provider session and closes terminals with history deletion requested. Those file cleanups can fail and log errors. Worktree removal follows the existing opt-in worktreeOnDelete policy. Pending uploads have their own expiry and cleanup, so deletion is not a physical purge of all stored conversation data.

Web owns its local composer drafts. Successful Archive and live-thread deletes use discardComposerDraft to release uploads and clear draft references. Mobile owns its device-local drafts and reference-aware attachment cleanup in use-composer-drafts.ts. Its shared live/Archive delete executor does not clear the deleted thread's draft. Environment removal clears those drafts; an ordinary network disconnect does not. This mobile retention predates the PR, including the Archive delete path. Changing that lifecycle is a separate product decision, so this PR leaves it unchanged.

I corrected the new Archive guide in a68f554 to say that Delete permanently removes the thread and deleted threads cannot be restored. It no longer claims conversation history is erased. The existing delete-dialog wording is inherited from upstream; no retention policy or dialog behavior changed here. The guide passed focused formatting and whitespace checks.

The per-command authorization and restore-after-delete safeguard are covered in the earlier reply.

@Quicksaver, thanks for the clarification. The code confirms that web calls discardComposerDraft after a successful Archive or live-thread delete. The guide also no longer claims that deletion erases conversation history.

I should distinguish the wording from the dialog behavior. The new Archive confirmations copy the existing live-thread phrase, “This permanently clears conversation history.” The phrase is inherited, but its use in ArchiveSettings.tsx is new. I understand that this PR does not change the existing delete-dialog behavior.

The separate low-severity concern remains: confirmArchivedAction returns true when readLocalApi() is unavailable, so project deletion can proceed without a confirmation dialog when confirmation is enabled. I will leave that concern open; the cleanup findings do not resolve it.

Learning: In PR #12708 of pingdotgg/t3code, server thread deletion removes the thread from normal views but retains conversation rows, orchestration events, and checkpoint references. Attachment file cleanup can fail, worktree removal follows the opt-in `worktreeOnDelete` policy, and pending uploads have separate expiry and cleanup. Do not describe deletion as a physical purge of all conversation history.

Mobile draft state is device-local in `apps/mobile/src/state/use-composer-drafts.ts`; the shared mobile live/Archive delete executor does not clear the deleted thread's draft. @coderabbitai I traced the unavailable-dialog concern in your reply. The local API object and the confirmation host have different availability rules.

readLocalApi() returns undefined only when window is absent. Browser and Electron renderer interactions synchronously construct or reuse the API, independently of server connectivity. Project actions also return before opening their menu when that API is absent.

The reachable case, a missing confirmation host, already cancels the action. dialogs.confirm maps an unavailable host to false. Removing the last host also resolves active and queued confirmations as false. The project-delete handler then returns before starting or dispatching deletion. Confirmation exceptions cancel as well.

The literal return true fallback therefore has no reachable caller through the supported Archive controls. It follows the existing live-thread guard, but the reachability and cancellation checks above are why no change is needed. The existing localApi.test.ts and confirmDialog.test.ts suites passed all 13 tests, including missing-host cancellation and cancellation on host removal. This resolves the same retained concern in comment5748825269; a future supported windowless caller would require reassessment.

@Quicksaver, you are right. I checked the call path. If readLocalApi() is unavailable, the project menu returns before it can start a delete action. If the confirmation host is unavailable or removed, confirmation returns false and the handler stops before deletion. I withdraw the unavailable-dialog concern. My earlier reply treated the API and confirmation host as if they had the same availability rules.

@coderabbitai The refreshed security summary repeats two concerns already settled in this thread. I rechecked both against 766eb6c05890717717045963cc2e90712b443a1c.

Terminal cleanup is owned by the server. ThreadDeletionReactor calls terminalManager.close({ threadId, deleteHistory: true }) for each thread.deleted event, including Archive deletes. Its event subscription does not filter out archived threads. OrchestrationReactor starts it, and the server installs its layer. Cleanup is best effort and logs failures, as explained in the existing cleanup-owner reply. The live web path's additional terminal call does not make it the sole cleanup owner.

The unavailable-dialog concern was explicitly withdrawn after call-path verification. That path remains unchanged: Archive project controls stop when the API is absent, and a missing or removed confirmation host returns false. The project-delete handler then stops before dispatch.

Web project ordering likewise retains the previously verified contract: project columns sort threads within each group, while native's global control also orders sections. No new implementation change is needed for these repeated observations. Please reconcile the durable summary with those existing resolutions.

@Quicksaver, you are right. I checked the code at 766eb6c05890717717045963cc2e90712b443a1c. The refreshed security summary should not list these three observations as open concerns:

  • Terminal cleanup: The server’s ThreadDeletionReactor handles thread.deleted events without excluding archived threads. It requests terminal closure with deleteHistory: true. The server starts and installs the reactor. Cleanup remains best effort and logs failures.
  • Unavailable dialog: The call-path check already resolved this concern. Archive project controls stop if the local API is absent. An unavailable or removed confirmation host cancels confirmation before deletion dispatch.
  • Web project ordering: The prior verified contract still applies. Web sorting orders threads within each project group; it does not reorder project groups when search is inactive. Native’s global sort can order sections.

My refreshed summary repeated settled concerns. No implementation change is needed for these observations. I also used the previously recorded web project-ordering contract when checking the current code.

Learning: In `pingdotgg/t3code` at PR #12708 head `766eb6c05890717717045963cc2e90712b443a1c`, `apps/server/src/orchestration/Layers/ThreadDeletionReactor.ts` subscribes to `thread.deleted` domain events without filtering archived threads. It calls `terminalManager.close({ threadId, deleteHistory: true })` as best-effort cleanup and logs failures. `apps/server/src/orchestration/Layers/OrchestrationReactor.ts` starts the reactor, and `apps/server/src/server.ts` installs its layer. The web live-thread terminal call is not the sole cleanup owner for Archive deletes.

Learning: In `pingdotgg/t3code`, `apps/web/src/localApi.ts` returns `undefined` from `readLocalApi()` only when `window` is absent. The supported Archive project controls in `apps/web/src/components/settings/ArchiveSettings.tsx` stop before opening their menu when the local API is absent. A missing confirmation host makes `dialogs.confirm` return `false`, and removing the last host cancels pending confirmations in `apps/web/src/confirmDialog.ts`. With deletion confirmation enabled, the project-delete handler stops before dispatch when confirmation is false.

Learning: In `apps/web/src/components/settings/ArchiveSettings.logic.ts`, `buildArchivedThreadGroups` must preserve project group insertion order when search is inactive. The selected `ArchivedThreadSortState` sorts conversations within each project only. When search is active, project groups sort by search relevance.

Closing because the new project-wide archive actions and ranked archive navigation require prior approval. The PR and discussion do not link maintainer approval of that direction and scope. Please discuss the archive-management proposal in Ideas, link the approval, and request reconsideration.
