Grok plan mode has no exit/approve UI in T3 Code #4514

Description

@ahmed-besic

Problem

When using the Grok provider, if I ask it to write a plan first, Grok enters its own plan mode (via enter_plan_mode).

In the native Grok TUI you then get a plan preview with approve / request changes / quit. T3 Code has no equivalent UI, so once Grok is in plan mode I can’t approve the plan or get out of it.

From the user side it just looks stuck: plan is written, but there’s no way in T3 to see, finish or abandon plan mode.

Repro

  1. Open a project with the Grok provider in T3 Code.
  2. Ask Grok to craft a plan before implementing anything.
  3. Grok enters plan mode and writes the plan.
  4. Try to approve / exit plan mode from T3.

Expected

T3 should surface Grok plan approval (or at least: show the plan + Approve / Request changes / Quit), instead of treating plan mode as something only the native Grok TUI can complete.

Env

  • T3 Code v0.0.29-nightly.20260724.896
  • Provider: Grok

    @Sawtaytoes

    Just ran into the same issue in 0.0.32, and Grok was getting stuck being unable to exit plan more or receive my "approved" prompt.

    @ruttydm

    Confirming this is still happening as of 2026-08-18 when using Grok Build as the harness in T3 Code.

    What I see

    • T3 plan mode stays empty / the plan never appears in the T3 UI
    • There is no proposed-plan card and no approve / request-changes / exit UI
    • The only way to continue is to resume/approve the same session in the Grok CLI/TUI

    This matches the diagnosis in #5409 and the earlier closed-but-unmerged #4233: Grok intercepts exit_plan_mode and reverse-RPCs _x.ai/exit_plan_mode / x.ai/exit_plan_mode with planContent, but T3 still does not surface that as a proposed plan. From T3 it just looks like plan mode is broken/empty.

    Workaround: open the same session in the Grok CLI and approve/resume there.

    Happy to add version/logs if useful. Latest nightlies I can see are still in the 0.0.34-nightly.20260818.* range and I do not see the exit_plan_mode handler on main yet.

    I am maintaining a parallel fork with this issue fixed.

    @9cb14c1ec0

    @t3dotgg doesn't use plan mode, or grok it seems, so I suspect this is very low on their priority list.

    @netpro2k

    fwiw, I don't use plan mode but grok decided it wanted to at some point and then got stuck unable to exit it, so its still worth making sure it can do that.

    @Sawtaytoes

    And it going into plan mode basically means I waste a ton of tokens on work that can never hit the disk. I'd love for it to have a way around that.

    Thanks for the report and the follow-up testing. We believe this is fixed by PR #8358.

    The Grok adapter now handles both xAI exit-plan RPC names, publishes the plan to T3's proposed-plan UI, and answers the native gate so the turn can finish. It also detects plan.md writes made during plan mode.

    I'm closing this as fixed as part of an automated pass on all open issues. If plan approval is still missing in a build that includes PR #8358, please reply with the exit-plan RPC name and the Grok event sequence, and we can reopen it.
