Default width for the right preview panel (setting + agent tool) #22037

Closed as not planned

Description

@CmcWakita

Problem

The right preview panel's width is saved per thread (preview-width:<threadId> in Local Storage). There is no app-wide default, so every new thread opens the panel at the built-in width, and I resize it by dragging every time.

Agents can't do it for me either. preview_resize only changes the page viewport, not the panel, and t3_environment_preferences_update has no width option. Right now my agent drags the divider with OS-level mouse events (user32 SetCursorPos/mouse_event). That breaks easily and can click into the wrong thread.

Proposal

  1. A setting for the default preview panel width, as a ratio (for example chat:panel = 4:6) or in pixels. New threads use it. Threads that were resized by hand keep their saved width.
  2. Optionally, a way for an agent to set the panel width for its own thread, for example preview_open({ panelWidth: "60%" }) or a separate tool.

Environment

Windows 11, T3 Code desktop app, 1920x1080 monitor, window maximized, left sidebar shown.

    Thanks for the detailed write-up. A default right panel width for new threads is already tracked in the Ideas discussion #16825 (option 2 there covers a default width setting, and option 1 covers carrying the last width across threads), so I'm closing this as a duplicate. Feature requests live in Ideas, so please add your agent-side ask (letting an agent set its own thread's panel width, e.g. through preview_open or a separate tool) as a comment on that discussion so it's tracked in one place.
