feat(search): full-text search in a publication's archive - #205

…urvives it search_documents holds the text of each post this app writes. post_search, an FTS5 index over it, is external-content and kept in step by triggers. D1 refuses to export any database with a virtual table, so the nightly backup would have stopped working. scripts/d1-export.sh exports the ordinary tables by name, then appends what that leaves out: the virtual table, every index and trigger, and a rebuild of the index. The dump still restores with one execute --file. Migration 0016, applied locally. Signed-off-by: Peter Kibuchi <68213317+peterkibuchi@users.noreply.github.com>
Publishing, editing, scheduled publishing and deleting now update the index, best-effort after the record is live. Account deletion takes the index with it. Existing posts come in through /api/search/backfill, which the dashboard calls in the background, a page at a time, until the writer's repo is done. Search answers from the index only after that, so it never quietly misses older posts. Only documents this app can round-trip are indexed. Other authors' publications are not indexed at all. The index drops the porter stemmer. Every query word matches as a prefix, which covers plurals and suffixes in any language, and a half-typed word still finds its full form. The archive's search box is now a GET form, so it works without JavaScript and a search is a link. An indexed writer gets full-text results ranked title first, with the matching passage quoted and the matches marked. Any other publication gets its newest page's titles and summaries filtered, and the page says that is what it searched. Searches are never cached. The read cache's key would have served the plain archive, and no purge can reach a page per query after a delete or takedown. - The index carries each writer as one token, matched with every query. A search used to match every writer's posts and filter after the join, so its rows read grew with the whole corpus. A single-character word matches exactly, not as a prefix of every word, and 2- and 3-letter prefix indexes keep short prefixes cheap. - The search server function checks the author-level takedown itself, since it can be called without the archive loader. - Posts in another app's format are found by title and summary again. - The backfill never overwrites a post edited after its page was read. A slower tab can't undo a finished backfill, and a refusal halfway through the walk no longer marks a partial index complete. - A title search over a listing that failed says so, not "no posts match". Highlight markers are stripped from the fallback's titles. - The backup script guards every appended statement with IF NOT EXISTS, names FTS5 shadow tables exactly, and appends views. The workflow now proves each dump restores before uploading it. Signed-off-by: Peter Kibuchi <68213317+peterkibuchi@users.noreply.github.com>

… a failed call Hidden matches were filtered after the 21-row window, so a run of them could leave visible posts off the page. The search query now excludes them itself. A failed search call now falls back to the title filter instead of failing the archive. Signed-off-by: Peter Kibuchi <68213317+peterkibuchi@users.noreply.github.com>

Scope
Search on a publication's archive now covers the full text of every post, not
the titles and summaries of one loaded page. Results come ranked, with the
matching passage quoted and the matched words marked.
0016_post_search.sqladdssearch_documents(the textof each post) and
post_search, an FTS5 index over it. The index isexternal-content and kept in step by triggers.
search_backfillstracks howfar each writer's backfill has got.
the index after the record is live, and best-effort, so a D1 failure never
fails a publish. Account deletion removes the writer's index rows.
/api/search/backfillindexes the signed-in writer's existingposts, 20 per call. The dashboard calls it in the background until it says
done. Search answers from the index only after that, so it never quietly
misses older posts.
/@handle?q=…). Itworks without JavaScript, and a search is a link you can share.
Other authors are not indexed at all. Their archives render here, but
indexing them means reading a whole repo because a stranger typed their handle
into a search box. We'd also have no signal when they edit or delete, and we'd
spend the free plan's 100,000 rows written a day on people who never signed up.
Their archives keep the old title-and-summary filter over the newest page, and
the page now says that's what it searched.
Risk
The nightly backup. D1 refuses to export any database that holds a virtual
table, so without a change the backup job would fail from the first night
after this migration.
scripts/d1-export.shexports the ordinary tables byname. A table-scoped export also drops every index and trigger, so the script
appends those, the FTS5 table, and a
rebuildof the index, each guarded withIF NOT EXISTS. The workflow then loads the dump into a scratch SQLitedatabase and runs the index's integrity check before it encrypts anything. I
verified this against local D1 only, including a full restore into sqlite3. The
remote export with
--tableis untested. Please run the Backup workflow onceby hand after the migration lands, and before relying on it.
Migration 0016. It's additive: two tables, one virtual table, three
triggers. It's numbered 0016 because open PRs claim 0012 to 0015. Apply it
before the deploy that needs it. Whichever lands later needs its drizzle
snapshot re-chained (
pnpm db:generateafter rebasing). An uncached query. A search can't use the edge cache. The cache key keeps
only
cursor, so a cached search would serve the plain archive. And no purgecan reach a stored page per query after a delete or takedown. So each search
costs a DID lookup, one publication read from the writer's server, and two or
three D1 queries. Rows read stay in proportion to one writer's archive: the
writer is a token inside the FTS5 match, not a filter after the join. A flood
of distinct queries is the same lever
?cursor=already is, and the answer isthe same: a rate-limit rule at the CDN.
Known gaps. A change made in another app after the backfill isn't seen
until the post is next written here, for example a post deleted with a repo
tool. Every Goldroad path keeps the index current; a periodic re-walk would
close the rest, and isn't built. Posts in another app's format are found by
title and summary only. A delete that lands while that writer's first backfill
is mid-page can be indexed again by that page.
Decisions worth a second look
prefix, so "garden" finds "gardens" and "gardening" in any language, and a
half-typed word finds its full form. Porter is English-only, and it stops
"runn" from finding "running". A single character matches only itself.
prefix='2 3'keeps short prefixes from scanning every term.<mark>, and the page splits on them into text and<mark>nodes. Thewriter's words are never parsed as HTML. The indexer strips those characters
from what it stores, so a post can't fake a highlight.
included, because it can be called without the archive loader in front of it.
Verification
pnpm gateexit 0: 148 files, 2175 tests. One earlier run failed ondocument-content.test.ts's 250 ms timing bound while the machine was loaded. That test predates this branch and passed on the rerun.
pnpm buildexit 0.prefixes and accents, ranking, edits replacing old words, deletes, writer
scoping, hostile queries (
",NOT,title:,(), takedowns, and thebackfill's races.
mainand these tests checked out, four new test filesfail to load and 7 assertions fail in the existing suites (publish, edit,
delete, scheduled publish, account deletion, rights store). With the review
fixes' tests run against the commit before them, 24 fail.
pnpm db:generatereports no drift.Review findings fixed in
60d0ecd:slower tab could mark a finished one unfinished.
Fixed from the CodeRabbit review in
521f641: posts taken down one at a timeare now left out inside the search query, before the limit, so a run of them
can't push visible matches off the page. A failed search call falls back to the
title filter instead of failing the archive. Both have tests that fail on the
commit before.
