Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR correctly falls back to file-based secret storage when macOS keychain access is unavailable, but it still carries bounded risks: test setup commands could hang CI, status reporting may overstate a failed save, and the warning may not fully explain which credentials can be stored unencrypted. The change is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up. Suggested reviewers: Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Describe all secrets that can be stored in the fallback file.
The login flow can also save clientSecret and password. This warning states that only access and refresh tokens are stored unencrypted. Tell the user that all authentication secrets, including client secrets and passwords when configured, use file storage.

Add a timeout to the test setup security commands.
Lines 43, 46, and 116 start external processes without cancellation. If security or securityd blocks, the macOS CI job can hang before the availability assertions run. Use exec.CommandContext with a test-local timeout for these commands.
As per path instructions, Go code must use context.Context for cancellation and timeouts.

Record the backend only after a successful save.

Looks good, thanks @wgordon17.
…detection The original locked-keychain detection (security show-keychain-info <path>) was verified via a documented pre-implementation spike to fail fast without a dialog when a keychain is locked. During implementation, this was empirically found to be wrong on a real interactive desktop session: show-keychain-info has no way to supply credentials, so when the target keychain is locked it delegates to SecurityAgent, which renders a real password dialog. Confirmed via direct process monitoring -- a SecurityAgent process was observed spawning during the affected test, and a real dialog appeared on the developer's screen requiring manual cancellation. This is exactly the interactive-dialog failure mode the whole fix exists to eliminate, caused by the fix's own lock-detection step. It also explains why CI never caught this: GitHub Actions macos-latest runners lack an interactive logged-in GUI session, so SecurityAgent cannot render there, letting the buggy check pass in CI while failing for real desktop users. The fix replaces it with security unlock-keychain -p <password>, which supplies credentials inline so SecurityAgent is never consulted: on an unlocked keychain this is a no-op (exit 0), on a locked one the wrong/empty password is rejected immediately (exit 51, no dialog). Empirically verified against both a disposable throwaway keychain and a real, unsandboxed, genuinely-unlocked default keychain, with zero SecurityAgent spawns and zero side effects on real keychain state. Also adds a keychainProbePassword var (mirrors the existing securityBinPath test-stubbing pattern; empty in production, overridden by one test to a known password because securityd's already-unlocked no-op trust shortcut does not transfer through a sandboxed HOME env var override used in tests) and sets cmd.WaitDelay on both subprocess calls as defense-in-depth against a separate, independently-discovered bug where a hung/killed subprocess's I/O pipe could still block Wait() past the intended timeout if the process ever spawned a grandchild that inherited the pipe.
Adds 6 plain testing.T tests (not Ginkgo, matching precedent for build-tagged darwin-only test files) covering keychainAvailable()'s no-keychain/present/locked/binary-failure/binary-hang cases plus an end-to-end Settings.Save() fallback verification, all using sandboxed HOME env vars so no test touches the real default keychain.
This file (and the darwin-only tests it runs) has no coverage in the repo's existing ubuntu-latest-only CI, since config_secret_store_darwin.go's build tag never compiles there. Adds a path-filtered macos-latest job so the new darwin gate has automated coverage instead of only manual/local verification.
The "Keyring is not available" block asserted file-store fallback behavior via keyring.MockInitWithError(...), but did not pin keychainAvailableFunc like the "Keyring available" block does. On a darwin machine with no configured default keychain, these assertions would still pass but via the gate short-circuit instead of the intended keyring-probe-then-fallback path, masking a regression in the probe fallback logic specifically on darwin.
Post-review simplification pass. Extracts setupDefaultKeychain/stubSecurityBinary helpers in the darwin test file (4 of 6 tests had near-identical setup blocks) and a pinKeychainAvailable helper shared by the three call sites that pin keychainAvailableFunc in the existing Ginkgo suites. Trims inline comments in config_secret_store_darwin.go that duplicated explanations now covered in the fix commits' bodies. No behavior change.
This fix introduces the first //go:build darwin file in the repo (config_secret_store_darwin_test.go), which ginkgo run -r internal silently skips on non-macOS dev machines and in the default Linux CI. Documents where these tests actually run instead (darwin-keychain-tests.yml on macos-latest), so a future contributor doesn't assume ginkgo run -r internal alone is sufficient coverage.
The file's header comment claimed to match "it_keychain_darwin_test.go's precedent", but that file only exists on a separate, unmerged branch (PR osac-project#407) -- it is not present on origin/main or this branch. Corrected to state the actual reason for the plain-testing.T approach (the file must be //go:build darwin-gated, while the existing Ginkgo suite in this package is unconditional) instead of pointing readers to a file they cannot find.
The empty-password unlock-keychain no-op-when-unlocked behavior was empirically verified on a standard, non-MDM-managed Mac. MDM-enforced keychain policies (auto-lock on sleep, minimum password length, etc.) are untested and could theoretically cause a false "unavailable" result. This is safe in direction -- it would only cause an unnecessary file-store fallback, never an interactive dialog, since the gate's failure mode is always "assume unavailable" -- but is worth documenting as a known limitation rather than an implicit assumption.
Reset() cleared general/secret/caPool but not secretStoreBackend. No current caller can observe a stale value (saveSecret() always overwrites it before UsingFileSecretStore() is checked), but this was independently flagged three times during review as a latent footgun for any future caller that checks UsingFileSecretStore() after Reset() without an intervening Save(). Cheap to close now rather than leave as a recurring review note.
The full 'uv run dev.py lint' Go linter (golangci-lint) couldn't be reached earlier in this session due to sandbox network restrictions on the checksums/binary download; running it after network access became available surfaced two real findings: 1. gocyclo: runnerContext.run's cyclomatic complexity hit 31 (> 30 threshold) after this fix added one more branch (the UsingFileSecretStore() check). Extracted to a small warnIfUsingFileSecretStore helper, removing the branch from run() entirely. 2. nolintlint: the //nolint:gosec on the default-keychain exec.CommandContext call was flagged as unused -- gosec's G204 check doesn't fire on that call (only two hardcoded-literal args, no variable in a risk-triggering position), unlike the second call (unlock-keychain, which does mix in keychainProbePassword and path). Removed the unnecessary directive; the second call's nolint remains justified and untouched.

fulfillment-service/internal/config/config_secret_store_darwin.go:44: [low] secrets-handling
The unlock-keychain probe passes an empty password. On MDM-managed Macs, this could fail even when the keychain is unlocked, causing false unavailable and silently storing tokens unencrypted on disk. The failure mode is safe (file fallback with warning) and the code documents this limitation.
fulfillment-service/internal/config/config_secret_store.go(file-level): Line 299 · [low] file-permissions
File-based secret store creates parent directory with mode 0755. Pre-existing behavior whose impact surface increases with this PR making the file-store path more likely.
