Codex Desktop crash on Windows during Windows Store updater check (windows-updater.node access violation) #27146
I do not have a minimal deterministic repro yet. The crash occurred during a normal Codex Desktop session when the Windows Store updater check ran.
Observed sequence:
1. Launch Codex Desktop on Windows.
2. Use the app normally.
3. Codex runs the Windows Store updater check.
4. App crashes and Crashpad writes a dump.
### What is the expected behavior?**Expected behavior:**```markdown
Codex Desktop should handle Windows Store updater failures or unavailable network/store access gracefully without crashing.
Additional information
Earlier in the same session, the updater also logged:
2026-06-09T06:47:42.879Z error [windows-store-updater] Failed to check for Windows Store updates errorMessage=net::ERR_NETWORK_ACCESS_DENIED
The crash dump timestamp was 2026-06-09T07:02:43Z, matching the updater check timestamp.
Disassembly at the crash offset:
180017c03: 48 8b 01 mov (%rcx),%rax
This is consistent with an access violation reading address 0x0.
