Hand off option missing on worktree threads #14141

Closed

Description

@jamedeus

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Version 26.305.950 (863)

What subscription do you have?

Plus

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 24.6.0 arm64 arm (macOS 15.7.4)

What issue are you seeing?

Since the most-recent update the "Hand off" button is only shown on local threads. When a thread is started in a new worktree the button disappears and is replaced by "Create branch". I have looked everywhere and there does not seem to be a convenient way to copy the agent's worktree to the local checkout anymore.

This effects both new worktree threads created since the update and existing threads created before the update (when the hand off button was present).

This does not appear to be intentional, the documentation still describes the old workflow.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Start a new thread in local, these buttons will appear in the top right:

Start a new thread in a new worktree, these buttons appear instead (hand off is missing):

What is the expected behavior?

The hand off button should be present, as described in the documentation. It should be possible to have the agent work in its own isolated worktree, hand off to local to see the changes in a local dev server, etc.

This issue is still present a month later. The documentation has not been updated and still describes the original workflow:

If you want to bring a thread into the foreground, click Hand off in the header of your thread and move it to Local.

This path works well when you want to read the changes in your usual IDE window, run your existing development server, or validate the work in the same environment you already use day to day.

This has not been possible for over a month - the hand off button does not appear on worktree threads. Since the issue was opened the hand off button also disappeared from local threads (now only shows commit). I would be extremely confused by the docs if I was a new user downloading the codex app for the first time today.

I hope this wasn't intentionally removed - this feature received lots of positive coverage at launch and seemed like the main differentiator for the codex app. To be honest, it was the only reason I switched from the vscode extension to the native app, and I'm not really sure why I'm still using it at this point. It used to be effortless to run multiple agents in parallel, hand off to local to test, prompt for more changes, then immediately review the next agent's changes with no down time. This was the most polished parallel agent workflow I had tried and sold me on this app immediately.

Since this broke the closest replacement I've found is multiple local threads and git stash to keep things separate, but there's too much downtime and cognitive overhead for it to be worth it. I've more or less given up on doing things in parallel with codex.

Lots of other features have been added in the meantime but I'm hesitant to invest any time learning them after the one I depended on broke without warning.

@ambrosino-oai is this fixed in an upcoming release? I still have the issue on 26.409.20454 and there isn't a newer version when I check for updates.

So I figured it out. When you create a new conversation in a worktree, it's started in detached HEAD mode - no branch. So the typical handoff to local features are hidden until you create a branch. When you create a branch, you can click the worktree at the bottom to handoff back to local (renamed to handoff to branch), and you can handoff back to worktree from local. What's cool now is that it moves over the conversation, not just the changes.
